  • Great eBike!
Color: gray Style: With Rear Bag
We have put over 200 miles on this eBike so far, and feel we are at a point we can write a proper review. We have three other eBikes of different models (including a tough, 26" fat wheel bike with 1000 watt peak motor), so we also have a good basis for making a comparison when reviewing this bike. To cut to the chase, this eBike is fantastic, and we highly recommend it! Keep reading if you want more details. For starters, this bike is mainly ridden by Jen who is 5' 4" tall. I've seen other reviewers complain about the handlebar height for shorter riders. She likes the geometry of this bike as-is. I took a close look at the handlebars, and it appears they can be shorted by about 1.5" by cutting some of the bottom off of the upper tube (thus also reducing its maximum height by about 1.5" as well), but she said that isn't necessary and she likes it as-is. We've put this bike through some grueling rides. Multiple 25 mile long rides on a Rails-to-Trails (nice very even grade) as well as a 12 mile ride that included a 1,400' elevation gain climbing a mountain and a 2 mile stretch of very rough hiking trail (Appalachian mountain style with big rocks and roots). The bike has handled it all with ease. Battery life: After 25 mile long rails to trails, as well as a 1,400' climb on a 12 mile ride, this bike usually has about 50% battery life remaining. So far we haven't been able to ride it long enough to deplete the battery. We also have another (more expensive) eBike that I mainly ride, and my battery has totally depleted on 3 of the same rides. So this bike really has great longevity. Power: The power on this bike is great. We have another eBike with 1,000 watt peak power, and the Hipeak outperforms it. Both when accelerating from a stop (like to cross a street quickly), or torqueing up a big hill. The power is very impressive and absolutely is the full 750 watts claimed, if not more. Pedal Assist levels: The PA levels on this bike (there are 7 of them) are really good. There are a good 3 levels for slower speed that are reasonable to pedal along with and cruise for long-distance. In comparison, my other (more expensive) eBike only has 5 PA levels, and huge complaint I have with that other bike is that PA 2 is way too fast, leaving only level 1 for long distance cruising. Fortunately this bike does not have that problem at all! Also as a side note, you can increase the maximum speed of the bike to 25 MPH in a special settings menu, which we did immediately just in case we need that extra speed on the road. Build: The bike is well made. The welds look good, it's solidly designed, the folding mechanism works good (I like the additional safety of having to pull up on the latch to release it after releasing the lever), the rear rack is really beefy and solidly attached to the bike. Quality: One really nice thing about this bike is all the extra "upgraded" bits. It has nice contoured hand grips, the seat is quite comfortable and decent width, there are three really nicely designed bungies built into the rack, the pedals seem good quality. In other words we haven't felt the need to upgrade anything so far, with the exception of adding a side mirror (we chose the option with the bag for the rack). Bag: The bag for the rack (we chose that option) is quite nice. It holds a good amount of stuff, and extends upwards if needed to increase the capacity. It also has saddle bags that can be unfolded on both sides to add even more storage. Lights: The lights are fine. The headlight has a very focused beam, whereas my other bike has a wider flood beam. I tend to like the flood beam better as it seems more useful for actually riding in the dark, but I'm sure some people like the more focused spot of the Hipeak light as well. If I had to find two negative things about this bike, and really, really nitpick, they would be: Brake light. When the lights are on, the taillight stays on all the time of course. However when you hit the brakes the additional illumination for the brake is very little. In other words, the brake light is barely brighter than the tail light, so it isn't noticeable unless you really pay close attention. When the lights are off then the brake light is nice and bright and obvious (compared to it not being on at all). Brakes: The brakes are mechanical, and it takes a good bit of squeezing to really engage them when descending something really steep. Hydraulic brakes would be a great upgrade, but at this cost point they are just mechanical, and work fine as far as mechanical brakes go. However that is one thing Jen specifically mentioned is how hard she has to pull the lever to brake down a really steep trail. To summarize, this bike is great, and we highly recommend it. From the build quality, looks and performance, we really, really love this eBike. ... show more

  • Made for cruising in relaxed fashion or for easy runs to local supermarket
Likes: easy assembly, looks great, looks like a bicycle at first glance, the color to my eye is a pleasant restrained slate blue reminiscent of USAF blue, comfortable seat and ride, plenty of youtube vids for how to assemble, quiet even at full throttle to my ear, is able to climb using throttle only, an 8% grade, half a mile long, at 12 mph with 190 lb rider, top speed is only about 23 mph, but frankly that is more than enough to get around town in a civil fashion that won't get you in trouble with the police or pedestrians or bicyclists that may otherwise find something to complain about. Notes: Brakes are adequate. It is not nimble, but I only have about 30 minutes ride time on it and it is likely I need to adjust to the differences between bicycle behavior and ebike behavior in turns but probably I also need to adjust tire pressure as it came with low tire air pressure out of box and I did not top off before going for first ride, but steering felt imprecise at 23 mph probably due to low tire pressure. Dislikes: top speed is only about 23 mph. Edit - after 1 hour of riding - All steering issues fixed after adding air to tires. After getting used to how this bike responds, handling is downright fun. Top speed is 22mph on level paved road with 190lb rider and 15 lbs. of groceries on back rack. Disc brakes make a modest un-objectionable sound when breaking hard. Brake lever effort to brake hard is easy. No problem at all modulating brakes. It is easy to apply brakes proportionally. Shifter shifts nicely. No drama. Another note, when I was assembling front wheel, after it was initially lowered into the front fork (bike was upside down for this procedure), the disc brake rotor rubbed against the disc brake pad. Had me worried I'd have to adjust brakes, But, once I tightened the axle nuts the alignment was perfect: wheel spun freely without rubbing on either brake pad. ... show more
