  • Best bang for buck thermal camera
Works very well and has been useful for making sure my home is thermally insulated well

  • I should have bought one of these years ago.
I bought one of these as the last hail Mary on a MB that had a short on the 12 supply to the CPU. I have many tools to fix electronics including a very good DMM, an ECR meter (great for checking for bad caps, or isolating MOSFETs on multi-phase power) and a voltage injector. Unfortunately none of these were able to identify the short. I knew about thermal cameras and had thought about buying one previously, but none of the uses that I had in mind justified the $200 cost. When I tested it out on my problem motherboard it found the shorted capacitor in less than 2 minutes! (Pro Tip: Make sure you have some kind of pointer to make a shadow on the thermal image. I have a macro lens in my cart, but so far I have ben able to localize small components by the shadow pointer method.) After I found the tiny SMD capacitor, I tried the other methods that I had been using. Even though I knew which component was bad it was very hard to find it. Finding a shorted capacitor when the other capacitors are mm away with thick 2oz power pours and thick ground planes connecting them is almost impossible. The voltage difference was only a few mV. No wonder I had spent hours pulling my hair out. I am very impressed with how well this thermal camera works. I have found overheating light bulbs, a dead cylinder on a friends car (exhaust header was visible and one cylinder wasn't heating up as quickly as the others) etc. I also plan to use it to find drafts and cold spots this winter in the house. ... show more

  • 3star with the potential for 5 stars
The media could not be loaded. Let's start with the good. The amount of detail, is awesome. The resolution is obviously going to lower than what you normally see, but that's kind of par for the course of thermal cameras. That having been said, it super cool seeing residual heat signatures. You do have to be cognizant of the thing you are looking at. Some surfaces reflect heat and look hotter than they are. That's not an issue with the camera, but rather the nature of light. The device itself is compact and really easily used. The app interface is pretty simple and useful. It does by default constantly auto calibrate, and it's kind of annoying, but it can be turned off. Here's the bad: The software: The annoying bit is when you try to take videos or photos, they're not saved to the normal folders. They stay in the app, and you have to manually pull them out. The video feature (see pic 1) is broken. I tried recording multiple videos; uninstalled and reinstalled the app, to no avail. The static you see is what I kept getting. The photo feature is nice. I personally am happy that it keeps the scale and overlays. But it would be better to provide both. One with the overlay and one without. Here is the main reason I am giving it 3 stars and not 4-5 stars. The device. When you first start it up, the image is crisp, clean, and awesome. HOWEVER, for me, that only lasts for about 2–3 minutes. After a couple of minutes you begin to see, what looks like a filter/static on top of the image ( see video taken from screen recording app). This is my hypothesis. I suspect what is happening is the sensor itself is heating up, and that heat is being recorded. I don't know if that is the nature of thermal cameras; if that's just a result of the design of this product; or if my particular unit is defective. But it makes it very hard to use beyond a 1-2 min spot check. When it works, it's 5 star product. But the heat noise issue, makes it barely usable after 1-2 minutes. EDIT: HIKMICRO reached out to me to help me resolve my issues. Kudos to their support team. And they were moderately successful. First issue was the local saving. This was user error. In the App there's a option under Settings -> General -> "Save Pictures to Phone". It does exactly as it says. It's off by default. I just missed it. The solution to the second issue was more nuanced. Starting at the device menu, go-to "Device Info"->"Record Mode"->"mode 2". I'm not sure on the technical differences between the modes, but this fixed my issue. I'm still working with the Support team to work on the suspected heat noise issue. I'll update this review if I find a fix. ... show more

  • A very amazing Thermal camera.
This is a very nice thermal camera. I work as a industrial contactor, and the little camera is as nice as my industrial camera, as far as the picture is concerned. I also do a lot of car repair as a hobby/second job, were the camera helps in diagnostic work. The camera will not show you real temperature numbers, but I don't need it that ability. The water pump picture is of a new water pump that was inside the house going to a cold garage. The clarity is first class. It is also very useful for finding cold spots in the house( missing insulation), air leaks around doors, etc. ... show more

  • Great thermal camera
I really like this camera. It is a cheaper option than the more expensive ones out there and it works great for my purposes. I use this camera to determine bee hive locations in buildings. It helps me pinpoint the hive location and how big it is before I open up the space. It works great and allows me to be prepared for what I am going to find when I open it up to relocate the hive. ... show more

  • Excellent Thermal Image Camera & Easy to Use
This is a great camera at a great price. I downloaded the app and just plugged in the camera and it gave me the thermal images to show me what areas in my home definitely needed better insulation. My energy bills are too high so I'm very pleased with the images. Make sure to go into settings and change the temperature reading to either Celsius or Fahrenheit. Also the refresh rate on this camera is much higher than anything else for the price. I'm very pleased ... show more

  • Great for Teaching
I use this hooked upto my labtop so I can have on a projector. This works great for teaching physics students (and astronomy students) about the electromagnetic spectrum. Nice resolution and perfect size.
