Overall, great product. Both the mortar and pestle came in one piece. I purchased this to grind old watercolors down to re-wet and transfer them from an oversized plastic palette to a smaller, travel-sized metal one from Meeden. I was a little worried the pigments would permanently stain the marble (hello, it's white) but it cleaned up almost completely with dish soap and a little scrubbing, which is amazing considering I ground up ALL my colors from bright reds to dark blue and even black in this thing. It's a good size – more than enough for my art purposes, and big enough for basic kitchen use. And I beat the hell out of it crushing my rock-hard watercolors into powder, so pill crushing would be a cinch. The pestle is nice and chunky, so it's easy to grip. Only complaint is unevenness on the mortar's bottom curve; tried to take a good photo. Close to the center, there is a little circular ridge that pops up, then dips back down right in the middle, a little deeper than you'd expect the center to be if ground evenly. Is this a defect? I'm sure it'll work fine anyway, but it's admittedly annoying. I can't decide if I want to risk grinding it even myself or dealing with a return. ... show more

I bought this to grind my Celtic sea salt, when it arrived unfortunately the pestle was broken in two… I went to start the return and was informed they would simply send a new one, no need to return. I had a brand new set a few days later and now have a ‘decorative bowl’ for my shelf as well. Love a seller that makes these unfortunate instances easy. The mortar is grooved with a crater in the middle that the pestle can't even get into so you end up with chunks you have to dig out and put on the side of the mortar somewhere. After that your have to keep it straight up and not try to use the pestle at an angle because if doesn't actually hit the side at that point. When you use the set, if any part of the pestle rubs into the mortar a fine stone dust is created so you end up with stone dust in whatever you are crushing. The only way to fix this is to get sandpaper and sand down the inside of the mortar, which is a pain. I only read the reviews of this product AFTER I had it and used it. I noticed a good number of people who have this same issue. When I first received the set I was inspecting it for damage and found the polish on the outside was chipping off of the pestle and some was overhanging the side. I had to go over the rim of the pestle and chip off all of the sharp edges of the pestle. With this finally done I tried moving the pestle around in the mortar and it would bind often and if you are really trying to get a fine consistency it doesn't seem like the pestle even hits the bottom of the mortar. The sides of the pestle hit more then the rest of it. One of the points in the description states "Closely fitted design, with smooth action and optimized grinding surface helps speed up food preparation and minimize effort." This is an absolute falsehood other than the closely fitted design part. The action is anything but smooth and the grinding surface of the pestle does not actually hit everywhere in the mortar. If you like to modify the things you buy so they work correctly this is a great buy. But, if you would like the things you buy to work out of the box as designed and advertised I would stay away from this one. ... show more
