  • Only good for commandline user
I am a software engineer to do both dev and ops as my daily life. After trying to get used to this keyboard for a while, I still need to return it because of the following reasons: 1. It's way too expensive. I can use the same amount of money to buy a really good keyboard, a really good mouse and a really good headphone. 2. It's not friendly to developers. You may say hay it's brand for hacking how can it be not friendly to developers? I use a modern IDE to debug my code a lot. I can conveniently set a breakpoint and use F8, F9, F10, etc. to get to the next checkpoint. And I think most of us have a big enough hand to touch the function key without moving wrist especially those F8910. It's a really bad experience to have to press an Fn key with little finger to get an F9. 3. Bad experience to use arrow keys. Let's say I have to use shift and arrow keys to choose a serious of words. On a standard keyboard, I just need to press Shift, then use arrow keys. On this one, I have to press 3 keys to achieve the same function as 2 keys on a standard keyboard. 4. As part of my habit, it's not backward compatible with any of my old keyboards. That means if I struggle a long time to finally get used to it. All my old keyboards and the keyboard on my Mac are totally not useful to me. It's funny to see some pictures of people using it on an airplane with an open Mac and an HHKB on the laptop. 5. It's not compatible with my philosophy to not attach to specific hardware. If using this keyboard, my work efficiency will be greatly relying on this keyboard. 6. The topre switch is also available with other standard keyboards like realforce. 7. I need to use mouse a lot, it does make any improvement to me to reduce the arrow keys and ten-key. 8. My table is big enough to put 2 full layout keyboard. ... show more

  • Great keyboard but IMO topre did not live up to the hype and definitely not the price tag
It is quieter than cherry mx but it is still noticeably louder than scissor keyboards. The key travel feels quite long compared to cherry mx, probably due to a longer actuation travel. The keys feel great, the material and build quality is amazing, but it is near impossible to see the print on the keyboard unless you have light coming from behind you. I don't typically look at my keyboard when typing but with the unique layout, you definitely have to until you get used to the new layout. Light from above will show the top of the keys but not the ones printed to use with the function key. The battery saving feature (which you can turn off) completely turns the keyboard off so you have to hold the on button every time you use it after being away. I was extremely hyped for this keyboard but honestly, the cherry mx (red and brown) feel better in my opinion and I was typing faster on the scissor switches. I felt like I had to push much harder and basically make sure that I bottom out on purpose when using topre. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I also was expecting near silent with the type-s but it wasn't the case. ... show more

  • Good Topre typing experience but not help my productivity
I'm a dedicated programmer and have to work on all kinds of IDEs/Shells. This keyboard is so great when typing, and the size is also amazing. However, I have to return it due to the complexity of using arrow keys. I will love to keep this keyboard if it has the normal layout as other 64 keys keyboards. ... show more

  • Worth it!
I was nervous about how good typing on this would feel with the price being as steep as it is but damn was this worth the purchase!

  • Bluetooth
So this is a nice keyboard that feels great to type on my only problem is the Bluetooth connectivity doesn’t seem that great I find it dropping connection and freezing a lot unless I plug it in

  • Best keyboard I’ve ever typed!
Very pleasing to type on this bad boy. I recently owned the keychron k2 with cherry keys and hhkb blows this thing out the water. Orgasmic on every stroke lol

  • If you are frustrated with HHKB Hybrid, Read this.
I have HHKB Hybrid (non printed non Type-S version in charcoal) and have been using it as my main keyboard for the past year or so. Initially, I was not super impressed given the price point and the quirky key mappings. However, after customizing the function layer with key-remap tool, it has become very versatile and useful tool for me. Many people think that the Fn key cannot be moved. This is technically correct, but not practically accurate. Though you cannot "move" the original function key, you can add another that will perform the same task just fine and you can pretty much duplicate any key you want so that short cut key combinations you use often are easily reachable. As you can see in the screen shot I attached, I created my own customized function layer that is loosely based around VIM that works really well for me. Having arrows on "hjkl" keys, as well as Fn key on the left thumb and Ctrl, Shift, End, and Home keys near the home position means that I can freely move the cursor and highlight/edit texts in any program. (If you have any questions about my custom keymapping, please feel free to ask. ) If your biggest problem with HHKB Hybrid is the awkward key mappings, please give key-remap tool a shot. The setting is stored in HHKB itself (and will not be reset from taking out the batteries either) so you can take your keymapping with your HHKB Hybrid wherever you go. Of course, many other keyboards supports custom key mappings. I think there are a couple of things that HHKB Hybrid does that is rare among the options I have seen. First, it supports 5 devices (4 Bluetooth, and 1 wired) and switches seamlessly and quickly between them. May other keyboard offer up to 3 wireless devices rather than 4. For me, I switch between my work laptop, personal laptop, my desktop, and my phone regularly and just having one 60% keyboard for all of my devices saves a lot of room on my small desk. Wireless connection has been quite reliable for me in general. Even more rare feature of HHKB Hybrid that I really love is the fact that it takes regular AA batteries for power. I am personally not a fan of built in rechargeable batteries for electronics I am planning on using for a long time. Rechargeable batteries will stop holding charge over time, and at some point become completely dead. I also hate losing battery power and having to connect to my devices or charge them at inconvenient times. HHKB Hybrid using AA battery means that I can swap out the battery in just under a minute if my keyboard dies on me so I am never forced to plug in to charge my keyboard. As for the power-saver mode, I do not use them at all, and the rechargeable AA batteries I use with my HHKB Hybrid lasts well over a month for me. Again, it only takes a second to swap out with new ones so I just always have back up batteries ready to go. I prefer this to having to power on the keyboard every time I leave the desk for half an hour. Though expensive, HHKB Hybrid offers no-nonsense functionality that gets the job done. If you want something that can connect to 4 wireless devices (5 including wired usb connection), never needing to connect to charge (because you can swap out the batteries in seconds), and offer high quality topre keys and PBT key caps in a small foam factor, you will enjoy this keyboard. Just try the key remap tool if you are not a fan of the default HHKB key mapping. ... show more
