I think most people would not want to know the cause or date of their own death. So it wasn't surprising when passengers on a plane reacted negatively at the predictions made by a woman they've never met. While they try to convince their families (and themselves) that they don't believe the prediction, their lives are definitely impacted. I was so intrigued by this book that I couldn't wait to read a few more chapters. As the lives of the characters play out, one can't help but be intrigued by the twists and turns of this story. ... show more

    • An engrossing and well-done tale

I loved the premise, loved the writing (especially Cherry's voice), loved reading about people who are trying their best to lead good lives, and cared about many of the characters. The book definitely held my interest up to the end, despite its length—which is saying a lot, since I'm one of those people who has no problem setting a book aside. I typically prefer stories with a single immersive protagonist rather than ones that jump between dozen points-of-view, so the fact that I eagerly returned to the book night after night, wanting more, says a lot! At the same time, it didn't really deliver on the intriguing premise and stayed at a rather superficial level, rather than going more deeply into the subtler, riskier, murkier levels that beckoned. In the end of the book, everything is tidy and nice. Is that the most (and best) we can say about the idea of facing one's mortality? Again, Moriary is a talented writer and I enjoyed the book. And yet ... it won't stick with me, the way some books do. As a story, it was, indeed, "here one moment and gone the next" for me. So it depends on what one is looking for in a novel. I'm a big Liane Moriarty's fan since Big Little Lies. Even when she misses the mark (Nine Perfect Strangers), you have to marvel at Liane's writing skills. Here One Moment worked for me. I enjoyed the various characters in it, and Liane is the master of fleshing them out. The main character, Cherry, is amazing. Her life and love lessons felt true. I don't believe in psychics, but I enjoyed the book's premise and the various character's reaction to Cherry's prophesizing. A good summer's read and its messages will stay with you. ... show more

    • What would you do if you thought you were going to die

This was a bookclub pick and the premise of this book sounded interesting but the delivery just didn't do it for me. I felt it was overly detailed with information that did not move the story along so it dragged at times and didn't really flow that well in my opinion. I did want to find out who this mysterious woman was and what happened with the predictions she made. When everything was revealed as to why she did what she did on the plane it was like okay, this kind of makes sense but it took way too long to get there. Overall, I was satisfied with the ending and it did make you think what would you do and how would you live if you knew when you were going to die. ... show more

If you knew your future, would you try to fight fate? Aside from a delay, there will be no problems. The flight will be smooth, it will land safely. Everyone who gets on the plane will get off. But almost all of them will be forever changed. Because on this ordinary, short, domestic flight, something extraordinary happens. People learn how and when they are going to die. For some, their death is far in the future—age 103!—and they laugh. But for six passengers, their predicted deaths are not far away at all. How do they know this? There were ostensibly more interesting people on the flight (the bride and groom, the jittery, possibly famous woman, the giant Hemsworth-esque guy who looks like an off-duty superhero, the frazzled, gorgeous flight attendant) but none would become as famous as “The Death Lady.” Not a single passenger or crew member will later recall noticing her board the plane. She wasn’t exceptionally old or young, rude or polite. She wasn’t drunk or nervous or pregnant. Her appearance and demeanor were unremarkable. But what she did on that flight was truly remarkable. As it turns out, our main character is an actuary who has just gone through a major loss, which turns her into someone she is not and who will come to affect the lives of many. What a delightful read! I love anything written by this author, with the exception of one or two titles that weren't necessarily bad, just less enjoyable than the others. I found myself putting off finishing the last few chapters because I didn't want the story to end! The main character is so charming and her life story so engaging, while the side characters really pull you in and keep you on the edge of your seat every time it seems like the prediction of their "cause of death and age of death" is about to come to fruition. I will, however, agree with another reviewer that the story could be long-winded at times but its a minor observation. ... show more

    • Promising beginning, incredibly moving story, disappointing ending

Hard debate between 3 and four stars. This book begins by posing questions in the way that "The Anomaly" does, and like that book, it unfolds, at first, on a plane, and then follows the passengers' stories. (I do think Moriarty was VERY influenced by "The Anomaly" given all the similarities, and decided to write the "beach read", or (no joke) "airplane read" version, although her core plot premise is original.) A woman, seemingly unremarkable, stands up on a plane flight, and informs each passenger when and how they will die. She seems, of course, insane, or under the influence of something. But...could she actually have the power to see how a life will end? As things unfold, this seems....increasingly possible. The questions here are great and provoking: would YOU want to know when you will die? And/or how? What would you do, if you had this information? Is fate real? Can we change the future? And so on. The novel follows certain passengers, whom of course you start to care about and wonder if their fate will unfold as predicted, and Moriarty writes this very well. (The book also hops a LOT from person to person and from time to time, which can be a bit tough to follow (especially on Kindle). If you don't like this kind of story construction, be aware.) I had two favorite parts of "Here One Moment": the thought-provoking, life-questioning twister/thriller piece (again, like The Anomaly) and the beautifully written portrayal of one particular story of love and loss, which is lyrical and heartbreaking, if a little long-winded. The big issue, though, is that this book tries to be these two things at once. Because of this, when the storylines eventually tied together, for me, it didn't work. I feel the ending could have been more satisfying - it's a just-miss. ... show more
