  • Made in China with German steel, sharp and sturdy
Style: Forged Elite
I always though of Henckels knives as being high quality German made utensils. I was surprised to see they are actually made in China. Now, they claim that their own German Stainless steel is used to produce these, but I wonder. Anyhow, the knives are very heavy and the tange goes fully into the handle which is the only type of knife I will buy. I have had other cheaper brands actually break at the handle while chopping or put pressure down on it when cutting. This will not happen to these. They are very sharp, I almost cut myself removing one from the packaging when I fumbled it. Be careful. I have prepared several meals and cut a variety of meats and fruits with them. All to my satisfaction. The serrated knife works well on breads. I have a knife sharpener that will work on these knives also. I cannot find reason to fault these knives even though I was taken back by the made in China thing, one star off for that. When I buy a reputable German brand I expect it to be made there also. ... show more

  • Very Sharp Knives, But What Really Impresses Me Are the Handles
Style: Forged Elite
A sharp knife is a wonderful tool. Conversely, a dull knife is dangerous to work with. That’s why I always use a steel to keep my knives sharp and a good sharpening machine to really hone them when they begin to get dull. But along with a sharp knife blade, the handle of a knife is critical to its safe use. These knives from the Henckles Store have sharp blades and wonderful handles, which is a great combination. I took a chance in ordering them without having held them in my hand, but that risk paid off. These blades have a thick smooth bolster (the part between the handle and the blade) that makes it easy to grip the blade securely and prevent it from rotating in your hand. I was taught to hold the bolster between my thumb and forefinger and grip the handle with the rest of my hand. It was awkward at first, but now I would never consider another way of holding my knives (unless someone showed me a distinctly better method). These wide bolters make that easy. The handles have a nice feel to them. They curve and bulge in just the right ways to fit my hand. The end of the blade has a downward tilt to it that helps keep the blade right in place. A metal cap on the end of the handle looks nice and helps protect that handle itself. I can’t tell if the tang of the knife (the part inside of the handle) extends all the way through the handle or not, but it certainly seems solid and has a wonderful weight to it. The set I have has three knives in it: a chef’s knife, a serrated bread knife and a paring knife. All are excellent, though I expect that I will use the paring knife the most, as I already have a wonderful chef’s knife. But I use a paring knife practically every day, and can tell that this is an excellent example of the art. There is a promotional video on the sales site that is worth looking at as well. ... show more

  • Great starter knife set
Style: Forged Elite
It was maybe 10 years ago when I really invested in better kitchen knives and realized how important and safer it is to work with high quality sharp knives, I don't consider myself a knife expert but I do have a good collection of German and Japanese style knives made with their respective steels for comparison. As starter knives go I'd compare these to the Victorinox fibrox series of knives, I'm mainly looking at workhorses that are the chef's knife. Both are exceptionally sharp, feel great in hand, but I give the Henckels the edge (pun intended) for the balance with its full tang and its pronounced booster design, with the thumb and index finger grip everything just feels natural and falls into place. I have to admit I prefer the slightly tapered bolster on my santoku but I think that's more a personal preference. And it's a beautiful knife in the looks department too, whether it's sitting in a knife block or on a magnetic knife holder, just don't stash them in a drawer with other knives unless you want dull knives fast. We don't bake breads often but do get the occasional baguettes, I have used an old Miracle Blade knife for that but I'm glad to finally have a proper bread knife. It slices through the bread easily without tearing. The paring knife works well too, it has a solid one piece construction and feel to it that I like, it has a good substantial and secure feel in the hand and equally sharp. If you're still working with knives you got right after college, get these, they will be a huge upgrade and your hands will thank you. Even if you have upgraded your knives in the past but are still not happy with them and don't want to spend a lot of money for new knives you should give these a try, you won't regret it. Even though I have more expensive and admittedly better knives, I'd still be perfectly happy with these even if these are the last knives I ever buy. ... show more

  • Nice set for starting a collection.
Style: Forged Elite
This HENCKELS Forged Elite Razor-Sharp 3-Piece Kitchen Knife Set is a decent enough set to start a collection. There is a chefs knife, bread knife, and paring knife. They have polypropylene handles and the German stainless steel is stain and rust resistant. There is no knife block but the knives could easily be added to an existing one or a magnetic knife holder. These feel nice in the hand and work as intended. The 3 pieces in this set are the necessities to all kitchens for food prep. These would make a great shower gift! ... show more
