  • Solid upgrade for a worn out set
These are Henkels Knives.... just not their top-of-the-line, high quality ones. I also got these on the Treasure Truck for a heavily discounted price. Doing a bit of research, you’ll find that J. A. Henkels International is their bargain line of knives. They are made internationally so, that’s why these say “Made in Taiwan”. Did I know this when purchasing? No. However, I found for their high quality knives, it comes with a VERY high price tag; I’m talking $1000+ for a comparable size set. These are stamped knives, not forged, and will do the trick for a typical at-home cook. They aren’t at all the chef quality knives I believed I was buying when seeing the “Henkels” name. When I got them in the mail I was disappointed like many other reviewers. I too was confused about the block having more slot than knives. I was put off by the odd striations and sheen of the blades. However, after looking into it, these are true Henkels knives and will be a great replacement for my severely worn, junky knife set from 10years ago. If you want the Zwilling J. A. Henkels knives set that are forged, hand-crafted, and made in Germany.... these aren’t it. But, if you want a better than standard knife set, this 15 piece one (14 cutlery+knife block) has some items that will work for most kitchens. ... show more

  • Love Henckels, but...
I grew up knowing Henckels as the best knives. So when these were on the Treasure Truck I quickly grabbed the set. Then I thought, how in the world is this possible at this price? And I read reviews. Well, I had already ordered them and was moving and would need knives. I don't understand why there is a space extra - I'm not missing a knife, but at first I thought I was. You have the cutting edge which is nice and sharp. The other edge, while not sharp, could potentially do some damage if you have a habit of pushing on it (as some have said in their reviews) - so I just don't push on it. Overall, I'm happy. But I don't like that empty spot. Why would they create it? ... show more

  • Diassapointed
Disappointed overall. My wife had a chef knife from this brand that is her favorite knife. I figured I'd replace some of our other hodge podge mix and match with a more uniform set. They arrived very well packaged. A few of the knives are in pretty good shape, but almost all the steak knives, and half the others had chips and divots in the blades and the blade overall seemed to be very 'rough' workmanship. I'm not sure if it is just this series of knife being lower end of the brand, or if I just got a bunk deal, but None of the blades were of the quality of the chef knife my wife loves(same brand a slightly different line of the same series), and that's truly disappointing. Note I did get this on the treasure truck at a discount (still new, not a refurbished job), so not positive Amazon didn't just pick a bad pallet they were trying to offload, but that has never been my experience historically, in fact I think they are even more particular, as all the packaging from most everything I get from treasure truck is typically perfect (ie doesn't look like it came off the bottom of a roughly handled pallet. ... show more

  • These used to be good knives
I own a 15 year old set of the Fine Edge Pro knives. It was our first set of knives, and we have been pleased with them. We wanted some new steak knives, and saw this set on sale, and thought it was a good time to renew our knives. We were sorely mistaken. The quality of the new knives is much worse; I thought it was a Chinese knockoff, and it may be. I am returning them because I don't think they are worth $20. Here are my main issues: 1. The Chef's knife tip was malformed (see picture). 2. They were not sharp. I don't pay for dull knives. The curve at the tip of each knife would not cut paper or skin. The flat of the blades were a little better, but the bevels were not even. Whoever sharpened these did not know what they were doing, did not care, or probably both. 3. On a few of the knives there was a noticeable gap between the blade and the handle. 4. There was a sharp bur on the back side of each blade from the punching process. These were literally sharper than the tips of the blades, and would cut your hand if you ran it down the back with some force. The old knives did not have this. This is a poor way to save a few cents. 5. The scissors seemed pretty nice, except they had plastic hinge cover caps that had a gap where it met the blade. I can't wait for some chicken juice to get in there. 6. The packaging was horrible. Do not give this as a gift to someone you like. The pieces came in an unmarked cardboard box. Inside there were poorly packed sub-boxes of knives (bowed and overstuffed or mispacked), and the wood block in a plastic bag. No instructions, user manual, warranty info, or flyer of any kind. At least give me a card telling me were to find more information. 7. One good thing: The wood block seemed pretty nice. I'm not sure my disappointment comes across strongly enough. My old knife set even had the same part numbers printed on the blades as the new set, but the old ones might as well have been gold plated for how much of a difference there was. I haven't sharpened them in over a year, and they were still sharper than the brand new set. I used to hold Henkels in high regard, but no longer. I will buy a new set, but not from them. ... show more

  • Be careful!
These knives look very nice and they are sharp. The first time I used a steak knife and it was cutting just fine. Then I saw blood on the top of the blade near the handle. My index finger had slipped from the handle onto the blade and got cut rather badly. It’s so sharp that I didn’t even feel it. I checked all the knives and the top edges are all very sharp. I looked at my old knives and the top edges have been polished and rounded. I think I learned my lesson and will be very careful to keep my finger on the handle but I feel that these sharp top edges should be rounded and polished. ... show more

  • Nice knives but light
These are a great brand but should have known based on the price they would not have been 100%. These knife handles are light in the hand, but still good knives.
