  • Excellent parka, but everybody else is right, order 1 size bigger than you expect!
So, first, sizing: ordering 1 size up, the jacket will fit (almost) perfectly - the arms are a little too long, but the Velcro sleeves easily solve that problem. I own another Helly parka, which is a medium and which is pretty big in the middle. I can wear big heavy sweaters and have plenty of room. With the Dubliner, I followed other reviewers' advice and ordered a large. I can fit a bulky sweater under the large, but there isn't a ton of room, which is fine by me. However, if you want the jacket to fit loosely (like all the people I see walking around in over-sized Canada Goose jackets), then order 2 sizes up, but account for the sleeves being longer. Second, warmth: it feels thin, it doesn't look/feel like it should be as warm as it is, it's not a down jacket, so it's not puffy, but it's also not bulky. I'm currently in buried in frigid, snow-covered Boston (14 degrees Fahrenheit at the moment) and with a good base and middle layer, this jacket is plenty warm. While I wouldn't recommend staying outside for extended periods of time with just a t-shirt underneath, it's not bad for short periods. Third, construction: Fantastic, I've really only ever owned Columbia parkas like this, but this is much nicer. From the zippers and the soft zipper cover thingy at the top of the zipper (no there are no zippers/pockets inside the jacket, not a big deal for me), to the make and detach-ability of the fur and the hood (although I, personally don't like the look of the hood without the fur), no, the fur isn't as nice as the $500 Canada Goose coats, or even some of the Alpha Industries Air Force parkas, but it blocks the wind. Because the coat is longer than I'd expect, which is a fantastically useful feature and helps to keep the rear warm, I do agree with other reviewers that I wish there were a double zipper, but that's minor, in my opinion. Now the big draw for me was that at the time of purchase, Amazon was selling the coat for $90, I think it's back up to $180 now. In all honesty, if I had to pay $180, I may have gone with the Alpha Industries n-3b parka, which I've tried on else where and is a fantastic coat that fit true to size. Amazon did their best with shipping, I happened to order before one of the major blizzards that hit Boston this month, so the USPS delivery was delayed and the USPS wasn't updating their site's status. I got impatient and Amazon was even good enough to create a duplicate order to be overnighted, but once I got home, I saw that the jacket had been delivered, so I'm about to receive a second one tomorrow, for which Amazon is already supplying me a return label. Which is, I believe the very definition of a first-world problem. I don't review everything I purchase on Amazon, but to go on a minor tangent: I do just want to say that Prime has been a fantastic investment. Free shipping is a nice perk, but the TV, movies and most importantly the prime music make it worth the annual fee. And then some. ... show more

  • Very nice quality but not as warm as expected - maybe the fur around the hood raised my expectations too much
First of all don't get me wrong this is very nice coat. Possibly the highest quality coat I have ever purchased. Every detail on this coat is flawless from a manufacturing standpoint (it even has a little fold of material the zipper pull tucks under when zipped all the way up so it isn't flopping around in front of your nose, never seen that before). It just isn't quite the winter parka it looks to be. Probably should lose the fur collar. I see a parka with a fur collar and I immediately think Alaska weather warm. Truthfully, I didn't expect this to be an Arctic weather coat but suitable for Midwest cold weather. One of things that effects your opinion of a product the most is your expectations versus reality. So I hope this review helps set your expectations such that you understand what this coat is before you order it. I think the review by Charles is right on the mark although 2 stars is probably a little harsh. The 3 stars I gave it may be a little harsh too but, dang it, it's a parka with a fur collar. I expect a coat that looks like that to be pretty warm at 20 deg F. Ten degrees warmer is pretty much jacket weather unless you're outside for extended periods. A little research on Helly Hansen and you will see pretty quickly these folks know what they are doing. They make serious cold weather gear (Alpine and Arctic stuff). The also make serious wet weather gear. If you live where it's around freezing and rains a lot (unsnap the fur hood trim) this is probably a 5-star garment. It's supposed to be very water proof although I haven't personally tested that feature. Or if you tend to be one of those people who just doesn't get as cold as others in the winter this may be perfect for you. I tend to run cold and like a warm coat. I also agree with Charles it should have a double zipper and is slim fit. I am 5'11" 190 and returned a large for extra large without testing it for warmth. Anyway, I live in the Midwest (US) and just got this coat. I have been doing some serious testing by standing out in the cold with various combinations of clothing and layers underneath and comparing it to my other coats to see if I want to keep it. Temps here are 15-20 Deg F last two nights. One night windy the other still. Wind didn't make a lot of difference as it blocked the wind very well. The coat is chilly within 5 or 10 minutes in these conditions with a long sleeve flannel shirt when stationary. Put a fleece jacket underneath (or probably a sweater though I didn't try that) and it's pretty comfortable although not as warm as my cheap down (and feather) coat. Put my Primaloft compression jacket on underneath and you think you're in front of a wood stove. I looked up the weather for Dublin Ireland in winter and I suspect the name Dubliner points to the weather this coat is designed most for (30 to 40 F and wet). I have to think hard whether I will keep it or not. As I said in the beginning it is a very nice coat. For really cold weather, it really needs a second layer underneath and it's an awfully large coat to be wearing when the weather is warmer. I don't necessarily mind layering in cold weather but, sometimes it's nice to have coat you can throw on and go out in the cold without needing to do that. I expected this coat to be that warm.. Like I said it's probably the highest quality coat I have ever had. ... show more

  • Excellent Value (performance/price), not perfect
Size: Medium Color: 597 Navy
I have been looking for such a while, actually purchased three, including this one, and decided to keep this. (The others were the Eddie Bauer Rainfoil Parka and Jack Wolfskin Glacier Canyon Parka.) The parka exudes quality. Very well made, and nice materials. I prefer garments with name-brand feature materials, as in this case with Primaloft insulation. There’s no velcro, which is a big plus for me. I don’t care for velcro. There are lots of snaps, and a few spare were included. It felt right, immediately. I am relatively slim, at 5’8” and 160, maybe short-ish arms. It’s a close, slim fit, though. I would prefer it was 5” longer - adding the 5” above the front pockets, and adding a couple of slanted hand-warmer pockets. And, it really should have a bottom zipper slide. (I am pursuing have a bottom zipper slide added.) It immediately felt warm. The Primaloft Black works, but not as well as my Thinsulate Cabela’s Upland Game coat. The faux fur ruff is probably the best faux fur ruff I’ve handled, but I still ordered a genuine coyote ruff that I will retrofit. The hood seems a little oddly designed, as with no ‘adjustment’ pulled in, the ruff completely covers my face. I had to pull in all of the adjustment at the back of the hood to make it work. But, at least it was adjustable to work. The cuffs are nice, elasticized (internally) about ⅓ way around, with a fabric strap and snaps to tighten if necessary. Overall, high quality, warm enough for this kind of garment, could be longer, and have a bottom-opening zipper slide. (One star down for length and lack of bottom zipper slide.) ... show more
