I have been fascinated by the John Constantine character since reading him in Swamp Thing and Sandman. Next step was to go read his own series. Everyone talks about what a masterpiece it is, especially Ennis's run on the character. But nothing happens! For the 1300-ish pages of this book, John walks around feeling sorry for himself, drinking till he throws up, and then getting saved by some random chance. The whole concept of the series was that Constantine was an everyman magician that saves himself not with magic, but with his wits. Except he doesn't do magic, and he's not that clever! Rather than making him smarter than his enemies, the author tends to make his enemies idiots. Or he'll get saved by a fluke, or luck, or someone rescuing him at the last minute. The whole book feels like John moping around, getting drunk, and then lucking in the end while all his friends die. His only redeeming quality--if it is a redeeming quality--is that "I did it my way!" There are some interesting premises and compelling characters throughout the book, but Hellblazer by Ennis doesn't rise to the level of excellence that the reviews led me to believe. Felt like a bit of a slog getting through it. And I don't particularly like Steve Dillon's artwork. ... show more

So far, it’s fantastic. A good length omnibus at over 1,300 pages long. Great art and story telling as well. I would strongly recommend this to DC fans looking to read some of John Constantine’s story. As well as new comic readers, however if you are not a fan of things that delve heavily into religion, this will make you feel uncomfortable. And if you aren’t a fan of sad stories or dark humor. Great piece of work. Highly recommended for both that enjoy some good stories from Ennis and the tales of John Constantine. Comic arrived in time and mint conditions.

    • John Constantine... DC's best character?
Still reading currently, but the front and back cover without the dust jacket looks amazing. This doesn't contain the first 5 trades that was done by Jamie Delano, just throwing that out there. Great character, good plot, and demons that have there disturbing auras. A must read for comic fans!

Is really big and heavy. But it was well packaged and came in perfect. Beautiful cover and nice paper. Worth it. A collectors piece.
