  • What a deal!!! Also my thoughts on Heil PR40 vs. Shure SM7B
Received this kit in 2 days as promised, it all came well packed in in 1 large box with all items in their original packaging, which was nice. While I was expecting the cheaper scissor-arm mic stand, the one in the package was the better version with the integrated XLR cable and no springs. What a hell of a surprise! As for the mic itself... I host a podcast (The Brülosophy Podcast) and have been using a Shure SM7B Vocal Dynamic Microphone, Cardioid that runs through a Cloud Microphones CL-1 Cloudlifter 1-channel Mic Activator into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface with Pro Tools | First that's plugged into my iMac. It's been amazing! I bought this PR40 kit because I'm looking for a way to have local guests on and, frankly, I've been wanting to play with this mic for awhile. Setup took about 10 minutes, start to finish, it was as easy as installing the stand and connecting the mic. I opened up Garageband and created 2 tracks with the same exact settings, one for the SM7B and one for the PR40. Speaking about 3" away from either mic, I began talking. After about a minute of going back and forth, I stopped recording and rendered the track for review. Here's what I found: Both mics sound fantastic! Honestly, the fact the PR40 doesn't require a $150 CloudLifter to make it work had me feeling a little bummed I didn't just go with it instead of the SM7B when I was starting podcasting a few months ago. However, as I continued to listen over and over, I found myself having a slight preference for the SM7B, which seemed to make my tenor voice sound a little softer and warmer. The PR40, on the other hand, was more crisp and emphasized "s" a little more than the SM7B while also being a touch more bassy; I made a simple adjustment to the low-end that brought this down. Overall, my vote... FOR MY VOICE... goes to the SM7B, but with that said, if I needed another mic, I'd buy this package in a heartbeat and save the $200+ it'd take to get all the same stuff for the SM7B. ... show more

  • Good Podcast Mic - Not Great!
Color: Black
For the price, it's very average. It does not pick up low frequencies well, and if a gnat sneezes across the room in direct line with the barrel, it will be picked up on the audio. I'm running it through a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and it needs the gain up near max if you don't want to be kissing the thing while you talk. I'm also using dual plosive filtering to keep the thumps in control - one mic cover version and one external disk style in front. Does is work well? Yes. It just isn't as good as the Shure XLR mic is, but at least you can use this without a signal booster. ... show more

The Heil products speak for themselves and the combination of all the components is a real money saver. I was concerned about the boom and other reviews discussed how it wobbles in the base. Well that is true and due to the base having a hole way to big for the portion of the arm that slides into the base. There is a locking bolt on the base and a plastic collar but I didn't view that as a good solution. After some measurements i determined that an off the shelf sleeve that is 1/2" ID and 5/8" OD would solve the problem. A few $$ at the local Ace Hardware or available here on Amazon. With sleeve installed the boom is very good and supports the mic fine. See (Pack of 2) Steel Spanner Flanged Bushing 1/2" ID x 5/8" OD x 1-3/16" Long ... show more

  • I was VERY disappointed
The media could not be loaded. Firstly - this is a great value kit. The shock mount is perfect for the mic, and a very high quality mic arm and desk mount/clamp are included. Curiously it's no Heil's own PL-2T arm for some reason, but it's still a very nice one. And the XLR cable is fine. I was however very disappointed in this "legendary" microphone. I always sound more muffled or tinny than other microphones. I've learned it was designed more for HAM Radio sound, to not have much low-end, but I honestly am not sure how much I could recommend it for content creation use in 2018. ... show more

  • Pleasant surprise
As if this deal Heil Sound PR 40 Dynamic Cardioid Studio Microphone Bundle with PRSM Shock Mount, Two-Section Broadcast Arm and Microphone Cable wasn't good enough, my package came with an upgrade from the Auray BA-2EN boom which was listed in the product description. They included the upgrade to the Auray BAI-2N which has no external springs, integrated XLR cable and a 14" extension to help get over computer monitors. I have a similar setup in another location using the Heil PL2T Overhead Studio and Broadcast Boom Mount which sells on Amazon for $120, and the quality of this upgraded Auray boom is every bit as good. To make it even better, the Heil 12" riser runs $28.00, meaning that this package includes boom components that would cost $148 from Heil. Of course the Heil PR 40 is a wonderful broadcast-quality mic and the genuine Heil shock mount is high quality. I couldn't be any happier. ... show more

  • Wow - looks as great as it sounds!
Purchased to experiment with podcasting, I wasn't sure about the champagne color, but was sold on the professional reviews and sound examples/comparisons. The build quality is superb and the color changes with viewing angle. It looks silver most of the time and is eye candy from any angle. Glad I got the package with adjustable arm and shock mount. It does need a pop filter, since the best sound is from speaking up close, and a box to convert to usb digital to hook to a computer. Did I mention it sounds fantastic? ... show more

  • Excellent microphone! the stand not so much
Love the Heil microphone - excellent sound. the stand is good but the plastic collet that holds the mic to the boom arm broke- crumbled actually. very poor quality plastic part. I have contacted both the seller and the manufacturer of the stand with no resolution. I have not been able to even purchase a replacement part. I would suggest buying just the microphone and go for a different stand. ... show more

  • great audio but a little deaf.
This Mike has assumed audio. My only negative is that I have to turn up the Mike gain and speak a little louder to get the same drive for my amplifier.
