Be careful its sharp!
Size: 5.7''
works fine. don't split long pieces of wood. only had it a few weeks so far so good. i have it mounted to a log with a square piece of plywood screwed to bottom of log to stabilize it.

Great for splitting!
This is actually super great!.. I'm using a 10 lb sledge with it... Successfully split live oak that was cut down one day ago. 18-in long pieces with about a 7-in diameter. Anything bigger than that on live wood is not so effective. Make sure to make your pieces longer than 9 in when you split them. It's easy to overhit and damage the blade. Purchase a file ..will probably come in handy... Would be super awesome if they sent you a little file, assuming it's going to happen ... show more

Works ok but...
When I ordered this item, the seller photos showed it to have 3 "wedges" on each side and a reinforcing corner wedge at the bottom of each side, where the two pieces of steel meet. When I received the product, it only had 2 wedges on each side and no reinforcement at the bottom, and, the images in the listing had changed to show it as a 2-wedges-per-side product. I was confused... my wife even confirmed that I wasn't crazy since she saw the listing before I ordered it. There are customer photos showing both 3-wedge and 2-wedge versions of this product. So... I decided to just try out the 2-wedge version I received. It's a bit of a mixed bag. On the negative side, the screws shipped with the unit are worthless. After pre-drilling holes in my stump, I still managed to break the heads off two screws and strip the phillips off another. I wound up having to remove the sellers screws and buy some grade-8 lag bolts at the hardware store. Only cost me about $3, so no big deal. (FYI... a 1/4-inch screw will fit the existing holes easily). Once attached to my stump I set about splitting some rounds that ranged from 2 inches to about 5 inches in diameter. The tree had only been felled and bucked 2 weeks ago, so the wood is not well seasoned. Most of the rounds split easily using a 5-pound hammer (small sledge). The technique needed to start the logs so they stay on the edge of the splitter wasn't too difficult to figure out.... I expect when the wood is more seasoned, this will be easier to do... Tap, tap, tap a few times with the hammer, sometimes a solid hit was required. I managed to not hit my hands with the hammer... actually, wasn't too difficult. Another technique note... When splitting, it's best to stand facing the vertical edge of the splitter and not facing either flat side. This will help you avoid split logs hitting you in the shins as they break off from the splitter. Only took on mistake to realize this :( I was able to split a few larger logs, just to test. I'm waiting until they dry out more before I take on the rest. So far, I'm happy with this purchase, other than the very lame screws and confusing images. I'll try to remember to follow up in a month or so after I get serious about splitting the rest of the larger pieces, once they've had some time to dry out. ... show more

This one works!
This thing is terrific. It’s the third type I’ve tried. The first was cast iron, which limited the size of the log to what could fit into the (very small) ring at the top. And the blade couldn’t cut through butter on a warm day. The second was a cone shaped device that went into a drill. It would get about an inch in and get stuck. Even in an impact drill. The shaft screwed into the bit so if you ran the drill backwards, the shaft unscrewed from the bit, which was still stuck in the log. Worthless. This new one works! It’s steel, so the blade is sharper than cast iron could ever be. And it’s not brittle like cast iron. I’m not exactly a stud, but I can split logs with this! ... show more

Great product!
So easy to use, wish I had bought it sooner.

Mehh
I was excited to try this out. Normal sized logs would cause it to not cut. Also using it with oak. After a couple of normal size logs I noticed the blade started to bend and chip. I switch to smaller sized logs and it worked much more effectively. I was able to use a hammer and bend the blade back into shape. Unfortunately this product didn’t live up to my expectations. ... show more

Great product but take care
Great for kindling. Careful where you place it could do real damage if you fall on it
