I almost returned this right away, but I'm so glad I didn't and stuck it out a little bit. I say this because there's a learning curve. First of all, be sure to use the ice molds and buy extra to have on hand. You can use ice cubes, but your hands tend have to hold it down firmly and the top rolls around too much, plus the ice is a courser grind. When you use the molds it comes out soft and fluffy - absolutely perfect and grinds very smoothly. I am absolutely addicted to ice but don't want to ruin my teeth so this is the perfect alternative. I probably go through three ice molds a day. This machine is durable and works flawlessly. It is a great value and you can use it with low calorie sugar-free flavoring, plain, or with the Kona ice syrups, which are of course absolutely yummy! I like this so much that I bought one as a gift for my mother who is 87 years old and she has no trouble using and just loves it too. ... show more

I’d purchase this again with no problem. Worked like a charm! You just need to decide on the amount of pressure to use because that will make a difference in the outcome of the shaved ice. It was easy and fun to use. My ice was like powder and was a hit at my grandson’s b-day party.

    • Not very efficient or practical, but the results are very tasty!

I like that you can either use the frozen disks or ice cubes, but with only 2 disks included you don't have much of a choice but to use ice cubes. The problem is that it takes 1 disk to make 1 drink, so you have to prepare well in advance if you are planning to have a party with these. Another downside with the disks is that they are not fully used (seems around 1/4 of the disk never gets used due to the design), so you end up with a bunch of useless disks you have to mash up together at the end, but you still end up with ice that cannot be crushed or shaved due to the same design fault. When using the disks you get a nice shaved fluffy snow cone, and with ice cubes they are more or less small chunks of ice. While I prefer the texture of the disks, they take a lot of planning in advance in order to be useful. On a side note, I freeze peach iced tea in the disks and add some syrup and its a very refreshing combination. Other fruit juices have similar results if you feel like experimenting with the disks. Mango juice also works really well! For this reason it only seems practical to use regular ice cubes, but it is still a bit of a pain to have to keep shuffling the cubes around inside and apply pressure to get any results. What I do like about the unit is that it does not take up much counter space, and the flavoured syrups I have tried are all very tasty! I was on the fence about returning the item due to how cumbersome it is, but I threw out the caps for the syrups so there was no way to repackage them anyways. There is no way to get the syrups delivered to South America besides ordering directly from the company, and using a freight forwarder from the US which ends up costing more for shipping than the syrups. I paid $100 for 10 quarts of syrup and $120 to get them shipped, not exactly a great deal! I really hope the company does something about that, or just don't even bother selling the machine with 3 syrups if they can't ship any other of their products outside the USA. Having to pay more for shipping than the items are worth doesn't make any sense and I wont make that mistake again! ... show more

Little ones can use this too! Good quality and easy to use. Wound up ordering more of the accessories as they don’t last very long and syrups are quite small. Good value considering the machine works well and the ice is fine enough to compress into cones or cups nicely

first purchase was in july 2013 for my granddaughter, big hit! then three more at Christmastime, one for me, one for a girlfriend's daughter, and a fourth for some friend's teenage boys. hits all the way around. i love shaved ice, with or without syrup. hawaiian ice sells replacement blades on their website: i have not found them offered for sale anywhere else, and wanted to, because their shipping is exorbitant, so high they should be embarrassed, but their ice shaver is awesome. january 20 2014 update: i got replacement blades (they are not thin like a razor blade, but a thickish piece of metal that tapers to an edge) to have on hand to use in the future, and extra cups to freeze the discs, which, btw, come three to an order. i ordered three and received nine, so that was a pleasant surprise. :) a comment about the leftover ice that cannot be shaved when the frozen disc of ice is used in the machine, a 3" diameter disc of ice that is about 1/4 inch thick. i have read complaints about this being a wasted chunk of ice, but i keep them, put the remaining piece of the disc in the freezer in a bag, and use them to cool down drinks that are in large cups, or to cool down brewed tea for iced tea. i consider having the leftover discs a bonus! i buy snow cone concentrate from Ralph's SnoBall Supply and make cavity/bacteria killing snow cone syrups with xylitol granules, a sugar alcohol sweetener, so every snow cone is a treatment for my teeth. you can even buy some of the concentrates that are clear, eliminating dye, but there are still the preservatives. they also sell syrups pre-made with cane sugar and charge reasonable prices for them, but i buy the concentrates to be able to use different sweeteners. xylitol is also diabetic friendly, and it doesn't taste fake, just good, and i usually HATE artificial sweeteners. i made some syrups with cane sugar this weekend for my grandkids to take home, or you can use stevia or whatever floats your boat. i am not using the xylitol to save on calories, but it does that as well. each 4-ounce bottle of sample concentrate yields a gallon of syrup. i make my syrups about a cup at a time. they are awesome tasting and making them with xylitol keeps cavity-causing bacteria out of my mouth. so fast, so easy, so cost-effective, so good. :) ... show more
