  • Simply Fantastic in every way
I purchased two of these to set up on my deck for playing music with a cigar at night . . . and occasionally to use to watch an outdoor movie with my projector. A friend had the Studio 4 and was really happy with it. The sound is amazing, the pairing of the two for "party mode" works perfectly, and they feel solid enough to double as a weapon. The sound quality is epic (for a small, battery-powered speaker), and even low-volume bass (Jazz bass guitar) sounds amazing. I'll do a quick pro/con and let you get on your way. Pros: Amazing sound Amazing bass Decent power (I usually can't play jazz higher than about a third of the way up for fear of annoying the neighbors, but of course it isn't going to be as powerful as a full plug-in home system) Long-lasting battery Painfully easy to use Bluetooth works well "Party Mode" pairing is intuitive and easy (allows one speaker to be connected to your device with Bluetooth, and it will duplicate its sound in the second speaker) if you have two of them. Or you can use your phone's dual-speaker capability. I've tried both, and end up using the built-in one over my phone's. They look good. All black, covered in cloth, solid carrying handle. Solid, with a low center of gravity and a stable base. Cons: It's honestly really hard to find a downside to these. If you wanted to *really* nitpick, you could say that the look a tiny bit like a woman's fashionable purse. They are a bit heavy, but with a bass driver like this and an 8-hour battery . . . that's to be expected. Plus heavy feels like quality, and makes them very stable when they are sitting on the deck or table. I have one con that is a bit of a big one for me, and which would be awfully easy for Samsung to fix (Samsung owns them). One of the selling points for me is that there is an app for these, and you can use it to connect to the speakers and actually play them in stereo. However the app is broken, and according to the reviews has been broken for the better part of a year. It won't find the speakers (even though the phone sees them both), which renders it useless. There is just no excuse for an app to be this broken for more than a couple of days, especially from a company as big as Samsung (or even just as big as Harman). To sum up: if you want a fantastic Bluetooth speaker at an awfully reasonable price, this is it. I'm not talking about a pocket speaker or one of thou gaudy base cannons, I'm talking about something that sounds significantly better than Bose, but for WAY less. Yes, you could get the Studio 6, but it is 100% identical. Same speakers, same drivers, same electronics, same battery, same shape. It is waterproof, but for over 3 times the price. You could get the Studio 4, but these are definitely a major improvement (and not much more expensive) over a speaker that was already really great. If you need two of them in party mode, they are amazing. If you want them in stereo . . . then your only hope is to hold out on Samsung/Harmon to fix their app. ... show more

  • Phenomenal speaker. No other words needed
I’ve had the Onyx Studio 2 for about 3 years now and I loved the audio clarity and deep bass, but it was just this big obtrusive piece in my living room. I saw that Harmon Kardon changed the overall design with the 5th generation model, and I liked the look of it. I figured for 160 bucks, I’ll roll the dice. I was expecting it to literally be the same audio quality just a better look, I was blown away at how much better the audio quality is. As far as at high volume, I can’t really give a review because I live in an apartment and don’t want to disturb my neighbors. It is that loud. I’ve had it about 3/4ths up on some bassy rap. Crisp highs, rumbling lows, if you’re anything like me, you’ll wonder how it’s physically possible for that much sound to come out of it. Battery life is listed at 8 hours, but realistically how I play it, I’d put it more like 3.5. However it’s not rugged, so it’s not meant for outdoor use. That being said, I can’t picture having it unplugged from the wall for an extended period of time. I’ve owned quite a few Bluetooth speakers over the years, I’d easily put this in front. Only downside is just PRETTY GOOD battery life when you break it down. Every single person I’ve had over has commented on how slick it looks and how incredible it sounds. Buy the thing. I’ll take it if you don’t like it, cause they link over Bluetooth, and now I can hear the wheels turning in my brain. And you’ll like it. ... show more

  • Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 5 Bluetooth Wireless Speaker (Black)
I am in love with this Bluetooth speaker because the sound quality is amazing! Crisp highs, clear mids, and deep lows that are tight and clean. If you are a BASS lover like me, you will LOVE this speaker. I was hesitant at first to purchase this it because it is NOT a STEREO speaker; it has only one 120mm woofer, and one 25mm tweeter. A stereo layout would require two tweeters, and sometimes two mids to cover the left and right stereo channels, and one to two woofers, with a mix of either two active woofers, or one active and one passive. The Onyx Studio 5's single woofer covers both the low and mid ranges, and the tweeter the highs, which makes the layout "MONO" where both the left and right stereo channels are combined into a single or "mono" channel. You don't loose any of the music or sound just because the left and right channels are combined, however won't experience the spacial sound stage or "live" sound that separate left and right channels would offer. I prefer a 2.1 stereo or a 5.1 surround system, but despite it being a mono speaker, it sounds very full and room filling for for its size. It boasts a compact and very stylish form factor making it easy to take it on the go, yet produces sound in a quality and volume of a speaker two to three times its size. I listen to R&B, Soul, Funk, and Smooth Jazz on an almost daily basis, and enjoy this speaker more and more with each passing day, and I never thought I would say this about a mono speaker, but I love it! ... show more

  • The bass on this speaker is mind-blowing!!!🤯 The bass on this speaker is mind-blowing!!!🤯
I just wanted to make a review on my new Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 5 50 Watts speaker... What I can say about this Bluetooth speaker is that it delivers really good sound it has good mids n highs but it is a mono audio wish it was stereo...😭 but where this speaker surprised me the most is how well the bass sounds from this unit you would be surprised it feels and sounds like a mini subwoofer 🤙 and battery life is okay .... Like you can see on the picture I have the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 4, I also have the Fugoo Tough XL and now I have the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 5 this speakers are awesome they all have there pros and cons... Examples Onyx Studio 4 has 60 watts this speaker is stereo sound... Its really good with mids n highs and delivers good bass and like almost all Harman Kardon speakers battery life is not great... The Fugoo Tough Xl has 38 Watts this speaker is water proof and with a 35Hrs of battery life it's really good ... The sound on this one is really good it gets pretty loud and with great bass so this one is great for out door use.... I recommend you guys this 3 Bluetooth speaker they are all really good you guys won't be disappointed with either one of this one's.... Thank you... ... show more

  • Bass Yes. Stereo effect Not really..
Great bt speaker for the price of 157. The bass is indeed amazing. You won't find another speaker at this price and size with as good and deep bass. Sound quality is great as well as expected from HK. A couple negatives.. Can sound and be very one directional and mono in many setups and placements. There is one woofer, and one tweeter. So yes you don't get a great deal of stereo separation and surround effect. But with just the two active drivers, HK somehow made it work well enough. Another downside is when unplugged, you lose about 20% of its loudness and umph. That's a big deal in my eyes. I've owned the jbl xtreme which is a good comparison. The onyx 5 has deeper bass and just a slightly more audiophile sound. The xtreme has better stereo separation and more suited for a younger audience. Just depends on what you're looking for. I will keep the onyx for now since I'm so impressed with its low frequency and bass response. But a little torn with the lack of stereo separation. I may buy another to have the capability of syncing them together for stereo effect. ... show more

  • Quite good...a beastly bass!
This is my first Harman/Kardon product (I frequently use headphones from their sister company AKG), and I was curious to compare it with the Bose speakers and the Onkyo mini hi-fi system, which I have at home. My impressions are generally positive - the speaker impresses first and foremost with its deep, resonant bass. It actually has such a bass that it nearly rivals the low frequencies of my 50-watt guitar amplifier! Beside the bass, the sound is generally decent, but not stellar - might be a close match to the Bose speakers, but is not as impressive as what Onkyo delivers. The overall clarity/mid-range and trebles leave something to be desired. Given that this is a mono speaker, the level of audio detail is actually quite good. At least to my ears, though, it doesn't seem sharp enough to be outstanding. I don't know how the stereo Onyx Studio 4 sounds, so I cannot tell if the Onyx Studio 5 is an upgrade or a downgrade. The volume is mighty and can fill out a large room easily. The bluetooth pairs easily and works very well. The material feels premium and solid as expected from a company with the reputation of Harman/Kardon. The speaker is portable, though leaning toward heavy - around 3 kg./ 6.5 pounds. It sits well on hard surfaces and even when pushed doesn't tilt. Overall, it is a good product, to be sure, and one that stands out chiefly through its beastly bass! I am pleased with this purchase but expected somewhat richer/clearer overall sound. ... show more

  • The best sound, EVER!
My sister brought her speaker along for our family gathering a week ago, and I fell in love with the power and sound! She got hers for free when she switched her phone service. I, on the other hand like my phone service and not changing it, so I knew I was going to pay money for this speaker, which was just fine. To my surprise, the price wasn't as steep as I thought it would be. I've owned a couple of nice bluetooth speakers over the years - my currently one a Samsung R7, which I don't knock at all. It's a really nice speaker and I enjoy it immensely and comes highly recommended for the price. But when I heard the deep bass and well-balanced treble of the Harman/Kardon, I knew it was time for the R7 to move over! It's the way I love my music to sound! ... show more

  • So good I bought a second one
Sounds so good I bought a second one! After doing much research on Bluetooth speakers and weighing the benefits of one type over another, I settled on the Onyx Studio 5. I bought this to replace an old Bose Sounddock that I converted to Bluetooth using an adapter. Well, that Sounddock was amazing and served me well for many years, but the moment I plugged the Onyx in and heard the amount of sound it produced, I forgot all about my Bose. This blows the Sounddock out of the water! The sound quality, especially the bass, is much better with the Onyx. It has sound much larger than its size. It’s going to be used in the corner of my bathroom, and will have some exposure to some steam/humidity but I also wanted something that I could grab and bring on the back porch or out to the backyard for background music. All of the reviews I read were right on the money, as far as, music quality goes. The battery life and durability still remain to be seen but it definitely deserves a shot at proving itself. I’m getting a second Onyx to pair together in order to have a more immersive experience and when entertaining to have multiple rooms playing the same music. ... show more
