  • Once a Skeptic...Now an Evangelist
Color: Black Size: Size 02
How can such a simple design make a difference? Well, I was skeptical...replace my melitta $4 cone v. $25 Japanese Hario? Are you kidding, no way. Not anymore...this Hario changes the game. I have everything from a $1000 chrome Italian espresso beauty to the $1 cone from a garage sale (Nespresso, moka pots, pavoni, etc...). I like coffee in all forms. Yet for ease of use, form, clean-up and taste, this Hario Paperless wins. Smooth, not bitter, full and rich, hot and easy. And fun too, especially if you know you don't have 10 minutes of clean-up. Search for the videos online for best brewing practices. I use 22 grams of coffee for 300 grams of water for a good American sized cup. (Yes, use your kitchen scale). Some handy tips: 1. Preheat your cup but this filter is plastic and steel so no preheating is needed. 2. Bloom 22 grams of coffee with 50 grams of water and wait 30 seconds before proceeding. This let's the coffee off-gas and settle into behaving well. 3. Pour in a steady slow stream (2 minutes of pouring if you can stand it) working from the center outward, then spiral in and out. 4. Mix vigorously for another 30 seconds. (Don't mix if you like the more delicate and fruity coffee in the Japanese style). Now for a celebration of the design features: a. Cone separates from the stand. b. All edges of the plastic are perfectly smoothed and finished nicely. The plastic is thick and rigid. It reminds me of the good German toy plastic. c. The steel mesh is the finest I have seen. I have many Japanese steel tea infusers, none as fine as this. Water poured directly against it will not get thru. My kitchen sink faucet spray when directed on it doesn't cause more than a drop to get thru. There is some sort of sealing on the mesh I think but I can't even see the holes. So why go paperless? Not for the cost of the filters but for the fuss factor (no messing with another piece in the puzzle, no "rinsing" and wetting the dry filter, bleached or unbleached?) and for the taste, nothing added but coffee and water. This is perfect: won't break down, won't cause an explosion, doesn't need polishing or take up counter space, performs consistently, self contained, and makes a most excellent cup of coffee. ...I think I might need to buy another one as back-up. This is a simple and perfect product. ... show more

  • Durable, convenient, portable, but makes light coffee
Color: Black Size: Size 02
Pros: 1. The plastic is not a cheap type of plastic but a dense kind that feels nice in the hand. 2. The cone and saucer comes apart for easy cleaning. 3. The mesh is steel and is very fine. I have brewed espresso grind and regular grind with no problem. 4. The saucer is wide enough to accommodate even the biggest mugs. 5. You don't need paper filters. 6. Cleaning is easy. Just rinse out the grinds. Cons: 1. As fine as the mesh is, I can still find coffee silt at the bottom of my mug. It is minimal but nevertheless present. 2. If you are impatient or groggy and pour the hot water too fast, the coffee may not be as strong as it can be. I've found that if I aim the stream too far from the center, the water passes through the side of the filter prematurely instead through the bottom after ideally passing through all the grind. *If you'd like stronger coffee, try pouring the first cup through the coffee dripper again into a second mug for a twice brewed coffee. Overall: This is a durable coffee dripper that is convenient and portable. It is worth purchasing for those looking to buy a no hassle way to make coffee besides instant coffee. ... show more

  • Great filter, wish I'd bought it sooner. Great filter, wish I'd bought it sooner.
Color: Black Size: Size 02
I love this thing!!!! We've been monkeying with different coffee making techniques for a few years now. Our latest and greatest enjoyment for brewing coffee has been variations on a pour over to make Japanese brewed iced coffee... Basically letting strong black coffee drip on to ice. Why it's called Japanese iced brew I don't know but seems appropriate I have the perfect little made in japan brewing set up now. I was using a super cheap metal filter meant to go inside of the basket of an automatic coffee maker for this same purpose. It was a great introdcutory to pour over coffee, it was affordable (like $4.00) and worked pretty well. However after more than half a year of this method the slight annoyances of it were making themselves known, mostly that my little reusable filter didn't fit on any of my jars or pots for coffee, it wobbled and needing bracing, it tended to be messing and any slight bump or vibration on the counter sent a little slosh of wet grounds on to the counter. No biggie but I decided to get a proper filter with a base ring to support itself. At $16.00 this Hario filter seemed "expensive" after my $4.00 filter, hahaha, I laugh because all you need to do is avoid a few cups of outer world coffee to save the funds for this splurge. ;) I have to say this thing is brilliant!!! It's MUCH sturdier feeling plastic than I expected, like...it feels strong, has a nice finish...you get your hands on one you'll know what I mean. The ring easily attaches and detaches to the filter cone by aligning little feet and turning the ring so it locks on. Easy, lovely. The stability...oooohhhh....after fighting with my ill fitting not meant for what I was using it for coffe filter this thing is a dream. First time I made my pour over Japanese iced brew in a half year with out messing up my counter! Plus it drips really nicely, the narrow point allows the coffee to drip down beautifully. I found it easy to clean, as others have said just knock the grounds in to the trash then rinse in the sink. The handle was a bonus touch, I was used to carrying a hot filter to the trash to dump grounds, now I can carry this one by a handle and keep my fingers cool. Well worth the $16.00 and wish I'd been a little less frugal a few months back and got this sooner! The coffee tasted excellent. I think this will be excellent for traveling as well. The few times I've made coffee in a hotel room with the provided supplies I always end up sad...don't do it, don't make hotel coffee, it's crap. This is so light and small that it would take up very little room traveling. I am looking forward to the next time I make hotel room coffee cause between my Berkey travel water filter bottle, some decent French Roast coffee and this adorable little filter we will be sipping a lovely cup in comfort. I think this would be a great gift for people too. ... show more

  • Quick coffee; quick clean up.
Color: Black Size: Size 02
It seems a bit strange to get this excited about such a simple device, but I seriously LOVE this thing! I've been making myself pour-overs for years and just using biodegradable filters. I was going to send this with my boyfriend (to use at work), but now I'll have to buy a second one, because I want it at home. Materials and Design: I was afraid that the mesh might be difficult to clean or that it might change the flavor (the way a slightly different grind will do, because yes, I'm that picky), but neither was the case. The mesh isn't quite what you'd expect; it feels almost slick or smooth, and that must be what keeps the grounds from getting stuck. The frame feels like a sturdy, slightly rubbery plastic. It doesn't seem fragile at all. I can't see the mesh coming loose and the slight rubbery quality would help prevent cracks. I'd probably have to smash this thing into a suit case between books to get it to warp or crack, and since I'm not planning on that, I'll probably have this thing the rest of my life. Using and Cleaning: It poured through at least as quickly as my paper filter one, the flavor is just as great, and cleaning it took me about 5 seconds: I knocked the bulk of the grounds out, then rinsed lightly, and I was done. Same as my old pour over, only I didn't have to use a filter. The only maybe down side is that some of the grounds stick to the inside, so I'm rinsing them down the drain now. I honestly don't think that'll be an issue, and it's very few, but that's the only change to my coffee routine (besides not needing a filter). One unexpected bonus is the little window around the base; you can see how full your mug is getting without lifting it up. I've gotten pretty good at not spilling and just kind of know how much water I need in general, but it's nice not to have to double check. If you're using a different mug or don't have the water amount memorized though, this would be the ideal. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone just starting out. ... show more

new to pour-over brewing, and slow-bar type coffee, and this filter made me a fan. No paper filters to buy/rinse/mess with in cleanup process, and I've had good results with this thing so far (actually bought 3 total in case I can't find them later on!). Plastic, but sturdy--no issues with the mesh or the plastic body yet (have been using for over a year, and I run them through the dishwasher, top rack, as well--may not be orthodox, but the thing survives the wash). So far, it's been a convenient, sturdy pour-over filter Note: you'll need a good grinder, as this isn't some magic panacea for coffee making, but this does a great job on the filter side of things. In terms of grinder settings, I'm using a Baratza Encore on grind setting 22--depending on pouring style, etc., usually get only a tiny bit of the grounds in the finished product. ... show more

  • Do your research before making coffee with the Hario
Color: Black Size: Size 02
My husband has (almost) very product out there that makes coffee...a hand grinder, an electric grinder, cloth drip sacks, an electric coffee maker....and of course, the paperless coffee dripper. If you're a coffee lover, then you know that a product and your coffee beans can make or break that "perfect" cup of coffee. And, even if you have the best beans made in the world ($65 a lb), if you don't have the right equipment, you might as well be buying Folgers. The Hario is a great little product. When using it, my husband has discovered that 1) an electric coffee bean grinder works best and 2) SLOWLY and EVENLY pouring your hot water is a necessity. He actually wasted a bag of the Worlds' #1 Best Coffee Beans (as rated by coffeereview.com) on the Hario because he hand grinded his beans and didn't pour the water correctly. Obviously, the Hario is meant to make one cup at a time, so if you are having a bunch of guests who want coffee, this is probably NOT the product to use. With that being said...we have had some good coffee and some really bitter coffee produced by the Hario. But, I don't think it is the products fault as much as the user. ... show more

  • Meh. Over it.
Color: Black Size: Size 02
I used this to brew coffee exclusively for the past 3 months, going from a cheap plastic dripper with #2 brown paper filters that I used for a couple of years. At this point I think I'm ready to go back to paper filters on account of both flavor and brewing process/cleanup. Using a regular pourover cone drip grind in this resulted in very syrupy, sediment rich coffee that tasted rather unpleasant and took absolutely forever to pour and brew. I thought that it would brew coffee faster, going through steel mesh instead of paper, but it's actually quite the opposite. So I coarsened my grind to what I'd use for a flat bottom Mr. Coffee type auto drip (couple of notches coarser on a hand crank burr grinder), and found that the pour/brew time was much more in line with a regular cone dripper and the grounds bloomed better and resulted in a more agreeable taste. Even still, I am simply not a fan of the muddy, oily features and prefer coffee with a cleaner finish. Coffee made with this dripper has a much more noticeably sour, bitter and acidic finish compared to paper filter coffee. The whole 'no paper' thing seems amazing in concept, but it's not all it's cracked up to be. Truth is, coffee filters are extremely cheap, you can get eco friendly ones, and they're readily compostable. And the cleanup for a filterless one, while not awful, is still messy and laborious in comparison. Need to scoop the grounds into the garbage or compost with a spoon (it's easier if you let them dry out for several hours) and then wash all the remaining grounds off of the mesh. Overall, I found myself much less inclined to make my own coffee dealing with this dripper because of the extra brewing time and cleanup, and actually ended up spending much more money buying coffee from coffeehouses on my way to work in the morning due to time constraints or just not wanting to deal with the extra hassle. I was inclined to give this 2 stars but I'll give it 3 for great build quality and craftsmanship, even if I probably won't be using it much anymore. ... show more

  • Great Single Serve Cup of Coffee. Worth the extra 5 minutes.
Color: Black Size: Size 02
This review is for model CF-02 I freely admit that I am a fully developed coffee snob. I got this unit because I can't stand the prefab coffee packet sludge that my work offers. The Hario takes a bit more time because you need to "bloom" the grounds, and you need to play around with the grind to get the right balance, but the payoff is a rich, bold cup of coffee. I like my coffee strong, so I grind my beans on my grinder's medium setting and fill the dripper to almost the top of the silver filter. Once the coffee blooms and expands, it covers the entire filter and prevents the water from just dribbling through without brewing. My feeling is if I make it too strong, I can always add water. If I make it too weak, I'm out of luck. I have found there is the teeniest bit of sediment in the bottom of my cup, but nowhere near as much as I find when I brew in my press. The unit is easy to clean - dump the spent grounds out and rinse. They say you can put it in the dishwasher, but that seems unnecessary. Several reviewers mentioned that the unit is flimsy. I haven't found that. The cone locks into the base and is as stable as it needs to be. It comes apart to make cleaning easier. I was initially concerned that the base wouldn't fit on my monster 20 oz mugs, but it fits just fine. It should be plenty big to fit over most drinking vessels. I highly recommend this for awesome single-serve coffee. Now they need to manufacture a Hario Mega (c) that you can brew 32 oz of coffee in :) ... show more
