  • A Good Price For A Very Serviceable Tool
These are pretty much as described. The display is large and easy to read, it goes to sleep to extend battery life, it switches easily from one measurement mode to another. The fit and finish aren't quite as nice as a Starrett or a Mitutoyo but for this price point, they see totally satisfactory. I've only had them for a few days and have only used them a half dozen times, but from what I've seen so far, I'd definitely buy them again and would recommend them to others. ... show more

Quality tool. I checked the accuracy with machinist gauges and it is right on. The switches have a nice positive 'click' to them. Display panel is very easy to read.

  • Good Tool, Accurate, Some Small Quibbles
This is the second Hardell rechargeable 6" sliding caliper that I have ordered, and it is a slightly different model than the first one with different features. The biggest difference between the two is the background color of the face; this one is orange, the other has a more common gray/green face. Frankly, I don’t see the orange face as a big selling point and the product page shows it to be a bit higher contrast than it looks. This is not to say it is hard to read, but like all non-backlit LCD displays, it depends on ambient light to see the numbers. But, in a design that is much better than the gray/green model, when measuring in “inch” mode, this caliper uses full size, 12mm high numbers for all but the very last (insignificant) 10 thousandths digit. This makes it easy and intuitive to quickly recognize the commonly used “thousandths” numbers at a glance. The function buttons are in a row on the face of the caliper body facing you when looking at the display, whereas on the gray/green model, they are arranged with two on the bottom of the body and the “zero” button on the top. In my opinion, the top/bottom arrangement makes it easier to manipulate the buttons when holding the caliper in the typical manner with your thumb on the knurled fine movement wheel. This orange face model does not have a protective rubber plug over the charge port, which concerns me if this is going to be used in a machine shop environment where an electrically conductive metal chip could easily short the terminals in the charge port and create a problem. Similarly, the charging cord supplied with this orange model is much thinner and less robust looking than the gray/green one, although both models have a very and obvious charge indicator LED that glows red until fully charged whereafter it turns green. Next, and a common complaint for me, is that HARDELL, like many other manufacturers, apparently considers the user manual as an afterthought. The manual is very sloppily written with numerous errors and fails to mention the charge indicator, the auto turn-on and turn-off, and stresses the need for a “warranty card” that “must be filled out in detail in the following form, and by the dealer stamped with the official seal is valid” - whatever that means as there is no warranty card in the package. Lost in translation. I compared the accuracy of this caliper to my shop standard NIST traceable Starrett model 723 and found this Hardell to be right-on at 1” (25.4mm), which is a testament to its quality. I also measured a number of micrometer standards and found that the Hardell maintains this accuracy at least up to the 4” mark, which is the largest standard I own. Considering its very reasonable cost compared to the Starrett, I think that the results are a testament to careful calibration from Hardell. Overall, with the incredible convenience of a rechargeable battery, both of these Hardell sliding calipers beat the Starrett on convenience (changing batteries in the Starrett is an exercise in frustration), price, and with the added feature of displaying fractional inches. I applaud the inclusion of the fractional inch measurement scale on the caliper as it’s very helpful when measuring standard drill bit sizes and taps or dowels. ... show more
