My 16-foot aluminum fishing boat has a fairly high transom. With standard short-shaft outboards, the propeller was too shallow, causing cavitation. I specifically chose this long-shaft version, and after installation, the prop depth is perfect—power delivery is direct with no cavitation at all. 18 HP is more than ample for a fishing boat; even with two people and full gear, it planes easily and has plenty of power for mid-range acceleration and overtaking. The 2-stroke's power delivery is definitely more exciting than a 4-stroke—RPMs climb quickly, and throttle response is sharp. The CDI ignition is reliable—starts on the first pull whether cold or hot, never needing the choke. The water cooling system dissipates heat efficiently; after two hours of continuous running, the engine block is just warm to the touch, with no overheating or shutdowns. Fuel consumption is acceptable—2-strokes aren't designed for economy, but the performance justifies the fuel cost. Overall build quality is solid for this price point—heavy cast iron components, evenly applied paint, and hardware with no burrs. After a full fishing season of use, performance has been stable.
