First of all, this came very well-packaged, included solid, serious hardware and was very easy to assemble (in just 10 to 15 minutes), The finished product is very strong and sturdy. Once I secured it to a large tree stump with the included lag screws, I gave it a good testing with both oak (hardwood) logs and Maple (semi-hardwood) logs and found that the small and medium-sized Maple logs (3" - 7" diameter) split very well, while only the small (3" - 5" diameter) Oak logs did the same. In other words, this is a great tool for light to medium-duty log splitting while, in my opinion, you're better off using a splitting maul for the heavy-duty stuff like medium/large hardwood logs and logs with knots. I do a lot of log splitting every winter and have always enjoyed using a splitting maul. However, I like this tool a lot and intend on using it often. As I always say, having the right tool for the job is very important and this tool's job will be to split all the softer wood and smaller hardwood logs I have. Unless you're only splitting large-diameter and/or hardwood logs, I highly recommend trying this wood splitter. Note: In order to secure this splitter, you will need a large log or tree stump at least 16.5 inches in diameter. (Unless you can figure out another way.) ... show more

    • Nice unit but bolts loosen up
This little unit is really sturdy for it's size! We put this on our concrete pad in the back yard and placed big logs in there. It made the splitting really easy. The only complaint we have is that the bolts keep coming loose. We will be using some loctite on them to prevent this in the future. This is for more than kindling. It split good sized logs for the fireplace easily as well. So far, my husband has been able to split everything he wanted to but one log (it is big and still pretty wet). He has split walnut, oak and other types of wood. Watching him, it seemed a lot safer than using an axe alone due to the ring around the wood. Less possibility of flying pieces. ... show more

This is a nice Kindling Wood Splitter that I got awhile back & have been utilizing since. It works quite well for the job its made for. Much easier to get wood split for the wood stove & the backyard fire pit now. Easy to use with no complaints. The media could not be loaded. This is a great splitter for firewood, I love the "XL" size that allows me to split some larger or oddly-sized logs that smaller ones don't! The splitter comes in a compact flat box with the main body, top ring, two bottom feet, and associated screws and washers. An extra bonus is that it comes with 4 heavy lag screws to attach it to a log or boards, I am used to having to supply my own mounting screws for things so that was a pleasant surprise! I found that using a 6lb hammer I could easy blast through easy to split wood like cedar and pecan with a single swing. On a MUCH harder seasoned piece of oak about 6" in diameter it took 2-3 hits to completely split it, but I was amazed that it split completely clean down the middle on such a gnarly piece of super hard wood! This is a very sturdy splitter, nothing bent or even flexed with that kind of abuse with full swings of a 6lb sledge. The cover they supply with it is a little thin, but works great to cover the splitter down past some of the log below it and protect it from the elements. We'll see how it holds up to the sun and heat over the summer, but I think it will hold up for a season or two! There are only two minor things I would improve with this: 1) The mounting holes in the feet are pretty far apart, so you'll need a fairly large log to mount to. I might drill some holes closer on the feet together to be able to fit all 4 screws on the log I happened to have for this purpose. 2) I added some thread locker to all 8 of the assembly screws because I can see them coming loose with all the vibration from use over time (even though it comes with split washers to help with this). I'm not sure it would be a problem, but thread locker will definitely help and might be nice if it were included or if the screws came with thread locker on the threads already. ... show more

    • Fantastic Heavy Duty Wood Splitter!
Very pleased with this log splitter. Delivered as pictured & described. Assembly was simple. The cover seems like it might be for a fire pit or something of a larger diameter & height, maybe to cover a large stump underneath it as well? For some reason I also received a small piece of plywood. It seemed strange since you wouldn't burn plywood, it having adhesive layers inside. I initially thought maybe it was for a practice split but I just disregarded it. It was well protected, edges are smooth. The part that cuts wood is blunt but sharp enough for splitting with a little force. I do not own a maul, hatchet or axe so I tried it out with a hammer & a little force. I am a 5'3, size 6 woman & had no trouble at all, although I lack much upper body strength. I could easily use this to cut kindling & medium size firewood into smaller pieces. Love how heavy this is. I actually first tested it out in my living room 😂 without it being bolted to anything & it did just fine, both with a log & with kindling. A friend who is stronger than I am helped tighten the bolts so hopefully they will stay in place after a lot of use but I'll update my review should anything change. Because of the direction of the wood grain, etc I do still want to get an axe so that I can make occasional cuts going the opposite direction. But this is definitely worth having if you have a wood burning fireplace, fire pit or stove. Very happy with it overall. Recommended. ... show more
