These taps are nice to have on hand. It's not often that I need to clean or cut threads for NPT applications, but when the need arises I'll be prepared with these. I broke in the 3/8 tap on some cast aluminum expanding out a threaded coolant port on an automotive job. The threads weren't even close to clean even after several passes, but I was able to thread in a fitting and it doesn't leak. I imagine the cast aluminum was as much to blame for the rough cut as the tap. If you are using it to cut threads into a hole as I did, as opposed to cleaning existing threads, just be sure to go slow and use lube. Put it in a little and then back it out, and then put it in a little further and repeat until you finish, uh, I mean until the threads are cut. Not perfect, but it did the job!

You won't be using this NPT thread set often, and frankly I don't know if anyone needs it except a professional plumber. At the same time, professional plumber would have a much higher quality thread taps set. Personally, I had a very specific task to complete in house related to the plumbing for my steam shower, so I needed this pipe threader. I don't know if I'll ever be using it again because, frankly, the quality of this Gunpla set isn't that great. I wasn't even sure I would be able to cut through the pipe because the quality of machining of this thread tap was questionable. Though it did the job, so 4 stars.

So you get 5 pipe taps for less than $25 (at the time I'm writing this). I've spent that much on a single pipe tap in the past so I'm not expecting the greatest of quality. The product description emphasizes cleaning or rethreading as their primary purpose and it states (more or less) "oh yeah, it can cut new threads too". I'd stick to using these to chase out old pipe thread junctions. If you've got a small project that requires a new hole or two to be tapped they will probably get the job done. If I was working in a production environment I'd be looking elsewhere.

These taps should get the job done, but the machine work was definitely done as inexpensively as possible. I love the fact that these have what appears to be a laser cut and engraved foam cutout, cut to each tap size, to hold the taps securely. I hate that there isn't even a cheap blue plastic box to put that foam cutout in. It arrived in a cardboard box, labeled, but the foam and taps are all that are inside. This box would definitely not hold up in a toolbox with everything else you'd carry if you were the type of person that needs taps like this. At approximately $5.00 per tap (average) this isn't a bad price, considering the cheapest I could find was from that big blue box hardware store at an average of around $7.50 per tap (average). So for this price, I guess it's worth a shot, and will likely do what you need done.

These seem to be made with good steel. The sizing seems right, but on a couple of the taps, the cutting edges are poorly finished. It appears that when the relief area was ground, there are a bunch of flash or slightly attached schwarf left on the teeth. This was the case on two of the taps. I could pry the pieces loose with a sharp scribe. However, the leading edge of the cutting edge on the same taps was not perpendicular to the tooth. Instead, it was hooked, so that there is a small 'egg tooth' on the leading edge. In my testing, I found that it was difficult to get a smooth cutting action. I have a similar sized tap (in one size) and it would cut much easier than the same sized on in this set. Unfortunately, even with some diamond files, I was unable to flatten the cutting edges by hand. These problems only affected two of the taps in the set, so I believe that this is a manufacturing issue rather than a design choice.

I did not have the problem with burrs on the cutting edge like some other reviewers and these do seem like hardened steel. They worked fine for cleaning up existing fittings. I did not try to tap anything from scratch as I have no intention of using them that way. I do wish they had individual storage tubes like my router bits and end mills. I will eventually find tubes that will work to protect the taps. Each tap is laser engraved with the size, though it's not hard to figure out which is which!
