  • Square out the box, easy to assemble.
I bought this for hobbyist use and light metal work for around the house. What drove me to the brand is the fact that their machines seem to be some of the few that offer low RPM. Product arrived undamaged and in great condition much earlier than expected, a very nice bonus. I had zero problems getting it set up by myself, but will admit I struggled a bit getting it on the bench. If you have any back or knee injuries do not attempt this, it's a bit heavy. Checked it with a precision machinist square from my machine shop days and it was square out the box. Easy to operate and setup, would highly recommend for anybody starting out. Love it, and will say my positive experience with this definitely contributed to my decision to purchase a G8689 mini mill. If you're looking for aftermarket products check out little machine shop.com great selection and compatibility lists. ... show more

  • as a tool should be
I grew up using my father's Delta drill press from the mid 20th century. He built reproduction furniture as a hobby while I was growing up. When I was putting together my own shop I got a Craftsman. It wobbled around and could not drill a straight hole. It's funny when you use a tool for years you figure no one would sell a tool that was not up to that standard but people are making some junk these days. So I sold the Sears model this year and bought this Grizzly. It weighs a ton! I had to get both of my daughters to help me get the motor up on the column. But now it is together (about 45 minutes) it works like a drill press should--accurate, relatively quiet, and solid. It is easy to change speeds and all the controls are obvious. All the handle run smoothly and it seems to be built to last. This press is a pretty amazing deal. I would say it is worth about $400. I do believe my father would approve of this machine. ... show more

  • Smooth strong
You can’t beat this press for the money. The only complaint I had was I had to take a die grinder to the table where the T nuts slide in. Once I ground out some slobbery casting they slid in no problem. Other than that it’s a smooth running, drilling machine. Not sure what I’d do without it.

  • Good Value for Dollar, Mediocre Product
I've owned this product for many years. It is serviceable. The price is amazingly low. However, the product leaves a lot to be desired. 1) On the drill press I received, the hole in the table does not coincide with the axis of the chuck. If the drill press did not weigh 1,000,000 lbs, I would have shipped it back and demanded a refund. 2) I've never quite found a suitable set of T-nuts to fit the cast iron table. It is a constant hassle to secure things to the table. 3) I cannot emphasize this enough: the drill press weighs 1,000,000 lbs. That has the favorable consequence of minimizing vibration and deflection when running, but a man could die trying to get the head on and off the column for maintenance or transport. Especially since the head may not fit onto the column without persuasion. Leave the lightbulb out when mounting the head, the light bulb cavity is about the only lifting point for your hands. 4) With an irregular shape, and sharp/fragile attachments protruding from every side and angle of the drill press head, it is difficult to lift or hold the drill press head without injury; and there is no way to set down the head without risk of damage to the drill or the floor. The only safe places for the press head are on its column, which will not fit readily, or in the styrofoam packaging, which will have been destroyed in shipment. So it is a maintenance, storage, and transport nightmare. 5) I wish the press plunged a greater distance per degree of rotation of the press handle. No matter what I drill, or how I set up, it seems like I always have to use two hands and carefully move from one handle to the next during drill operation; this makes drill operation physically stressful. 6) It seems like the drill bits usually trace a circle, rather than rotate about an axis, when they are in the chuck; but I've never bothered to confirm whether that is due to the chuck/press, or just cheap, warped drill bits. Probably a little of each. 7) If you have a suitable floor, consider the floor-standing press, instead of this bench top model. I often find myself thinking, "Can't drill that! It won't fit into the mouth of the press!" The advantage of the bench top model is that you don't have to break/bolt the floor. Also, if the column were any taller, you'd probably need a gantry to install the drill head on the column. But consider the two before making a purchase. Notwithstanding these considerable disadvantages, the press has good power, interchangeable belt speeds, and does drill. The price is astonishingly affordable. If you are rich, do yourself a favor and buy something sensible. If you are poor, then buy this and at least you won't have to drill sloppy holes by hand anymore. EDIT: One of the few redeeming qualities of the table is that it can tilt about an axis perpendicular to the column; though not without a fight. Also, remember that the effective size of the mouth is reduced by the length of the drill bit and the height of your vise! ... show more

  • Great machine, poor delivery service
Drill press arrived at the earliest date it was promised. The bad thing about delivery was, we were told it would be delivered between noon and 2:00 pm. It was sent to my son's home. He had knee surgery a day beore it was delivered. Needless to say, I had to be there and after a call to UPS at 2:00, they said it was the next item to be delivered and the truck was about 3 miles away. It arrived at 4:45 pm. Don't believe what they tell you. ... show more

  • SECOND MOTOR JUST LIKE FIRST
MY FIRST GRIZZLY PURCHASE: FROM GRIZZLY NOT AMAZON!! MOTOR #1 AND (#2 THEY SENT FREE) BOTH HAVE THE SAME RAPID, HEAVY ELECTRICAL VIBRATION. THEY NOW SAY ITS NORMAL. WELL ITS NOT, BUT, IT HASN'T WORKED ITS WAY OFF THE WOOD WORK BENCH YET. TO TEST YOURS, JUST SWITCH IT OFF WHILE RUNNING, THEN BACK ON WHILE ITS COASTING, NOTE ANY DIFFERANCE. FOR MORE TEST REMOVE THE MOTOR BELT FIRST. MINE WILL VIBRATE THE CHUCK KEY OFF THE WORK TABLE AND DROWN OUT (NOISE) MANY OF MY OTHER SHOP TOOLS. I BOUGHT A 4" GRIZZLY PRESS VISE AT THE SAME TIME, BUT LETS NOT TALK ABOUT THAT YET. I WOULD LIKE THAT THEY FIX THIS OR I MAY HAVE TO DOWN-GRADE THEM... I DID MAKE SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS ABOUT HOW TO KEEP ME HAPPY (SMALL FACTORY, METAL FAB.) WESTERN MONTANA. THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED. I PURCHASED THIS FROM GRIZZLY NOT AMAZON!! ... show more
