Description

Remember when power tools were actually powerful? The WEN 12-Inch Variable Speed Drill Press powers through metal, wood, plastic and more, with the ability to drill up to a 1/2-inch hole through heavy-duty, 1-inch-thick cast iron. The mechanical variable speed allows you to dial in the exact RPM (from 530 to 3100) for your project with the simple turn of a lever while the digital LED readout displays the current speed. The powerful induction motor features ball bearings for an extended life and balanced performance. The 1/2-inch chuck with JT33 spindle taper gives you versatility with a variety of bits, with on-board chuck key storage for easy organization. The 8 by 7.5-inch cast-iron worktable bevels 45° left and right for those tricky operations. The X-pattern of the Class IIIA 2.5mW laser shows your drill’s center points, saving on guesswork and sparing expensive materials. The 8 by 12.5-inch cast iron base features predrilled holes for easy mounting to the benchtop or work surface of your choice. And because it’s a WEN product, your drill press comes backed by a two-year warranty, a friendly customer support line, and a stocked inventory of replacement parts. • Very Solid Drill Press--Glad I Bought it!
I cannot speak to durability yet, since its early in the game. However, below are initial impressions after unboxing, assembling, and testing the unit on a couple of initial wood drilling projects over the first week: Definitely Chinese industrial ware: meaning, there are rough edges, rough finishes, smudges on paint—and even an aborted bore hole above the set screw which secures the head to the column. (Since the actual functioning set-screw is in place ¼“ below, the rather ragged empty mystery hole above that leads me to conclude that it was a mis-drill.) Bottom-line, there is certainly no top-line finish (á la De Walt, Delta, Milwaukee, Makita, even Ryobi, etc.) on this WEN drill press. If you want and need that kind of polish (and enhanced precision), you will have to seek out other brands and pay significantly more. However… if a solid, work-horse tool will satisfy your needs, this unit will do the trick. If I used a drill press frequently and regularly, for fine or professional work, I MIGHT seek out a more sophisticated drill press. However, I will only use this tool occasionally—when I need the accuracy, repeatability, and power that a basic drill press can deliver versus a hand-held drill. That is only a handful of times a year for me, but it adds up over time and I want to have the tool I need when I need it. SOLID & FUNCTIONAL: Despite the rough edges, this drill press seems so far to be solid and functional. Moving ahead, I will test it more and be better able to gauge its accuracy and durability. However, after a week of use, it seems to be a very functional tool, well worth its relatively modest price of $175. Also in its favor: I was impressed (and, frankly, surprised) to find that the laser drilling light was perfectly calibrated right out of the box. I definitely expected to have to go through the hassle of adjusting that—but the laser is dead-on. One less thing, as Forrest Gump says..! BOTTOM-LINE: Thus far, I have found the 4212 to be user-friendly, sufficiently accurate, effective. Nothing fancy, but it does the job well. It does not purport to be the top-of-the-line drill press, so I have to rate it on the basis of what it claims to be—not rate it against the “ideal” drill press. On that basis, given its satisfactory functionality and solidity, when judged upon the basis of its price-point and the value proposition proffered by the manufacturer, it deserves 5 stars. Bottom-line: I am very satisfied with the purchase and with the drill press's performance. I'm very glad I bought it. It fully serves my needs. Solid! ... show more

  • A nice drill press for the home workshop.
Style: 2021 Model
I bought this drill press, along with the WEN DPA2513 24x12 Drill Press Table, to go in my home workshop. My first impression was: for its price, it's a large drill press. It's 34" tall and weighs around 60 lbs. It also arrives unassembled, so be prepared to spend a while putting it together. It wasn't difficult to assemble, but I thought the instructions could have been a bit better... Once assembled, I went ahead and built a small workbench on which to permanently mount it. It has proven itself to be quite useful. It's easy to use and works great. I'm actually a bit surprised at how often I find myself going to it. For me, it was a really good deal for the price. ... show more

  • Great press with convenient features. My only issue is the quill travel is NOT AS ADVERTISED.
I got this variable speed drill press for Christmas. I am a machinist and I use it to make up prototypes and other new idea I have. First, the good. This press was extremely easy to setup. In 20 minutes you can have it all ready to go. The instructions were well written and helpful. The press has a 3/4 hp motor, which is substantial for most projects I work on. The hardest material I've drilled is some 1018 SAE steel, 1/8". It went through just fine with some wax lubricant. The variable speed is really good. Because of the built in led screen on the front, you can see very well your rpm's. As far as I can see it is accurate as well. My press can take from 600rpm up to 3100rpm no problem. It vibrates a touch as you get higher up, but nothing out of the ordinary. It's a quiet machine. The laser sight on it came well calibrated to my table. I didn't even need to touch it, except to install the included battery. I rarely use it, as I prefer to locate using other means. When I have used it though, it is right on point. The action is smooth on the column as well. It isn't difficult to ratchet up and down, which si really convenient. The column stop stops it from moving well, so no worries about your table moving while you drill. Now the bad: This press is advertised as a 10" drill press. To me, that means that I get 10" of travel from the quill. That is not the case. The quill can travel 5" only. The column travels approximately 20". I am not really sure where they get off saying it is a 10" press, but it isn't. That was a disappointment, as 5" of travel can be tough to deal with occasionally. My other concern is the chuck. The accompanied chuck is pretty bad. For light contracting work it is no problem. I work with some tight tolerances, and the chuck tends to loosen up on the drill, or run out of center sometimes. I am planning on replacing it so it isn't a big deal. Again, for work where you don't need to hold tight tolerances it isn't really an issue. Overall, a really good buy. The press is solid, and does what it needs to. The variable speed, led screen, and laser sight are convenient and work very well. The press comes calibrated out of the box for speed and such, and that is a big + in this company's book. I take away 1 star for the 5" vs. 10" argument, which I am really disappointed about; it also comes off for the chuck. I would have given it three without the great calibration and convenient tools on it. The chuck isn't such a big deal, as I didn't expect anything great, and it does the job. The 5" travel when 10" was advertised was the real killer. I would love to hear from the company regarding what the deal with that is. A good press, with strong power. The press really is great for it's price range, and I would buy this over many others. If you're in the market, this is a great buy! ... show more

  • Not for commercial use. Accurate and durable
Style: 2021 Model
Not even trying to compare this unit to a grizzly or jet machine, but if you need a reliable, affordable tool that checks off 85% or better of the needs in my home shop. Please understand that you are purchasing entry level equipment that is comparable to harbor freight or Lowe's kobalt line or depots ryobi line. Hardest part is zeroing the chuck in place, I wish there was a better connection for the chuck than to just mallet it on with scrap wood. That seemed pretty hokey to me but this is the first drill press I've personally owned so..... All in all good buy, hopefully will have until I can't get around in the shop anymore, but if it does break then less than 300 bucks doesn't hurt the wallet so badly. ... show more
