  • Nice drill press
Style: Benchtop
This a lot of tool for the money. It is solid, powerful and heavy, and despite some lackluster finish details, it performs very well for my needs. It was easy to assemble and everything fit. The owner's manual matches the tool and the assembly instructions were clear enough. The only missing piece was the cap screw for the chuck, but a quick trip to the hardware store and 50 cents later, I was back in business. The outside box was in bad shape when delivered. The corners were all crushed or torn. But the inside box was intact and, though some parts had shifted around, there was no damage. The styrofoam packing is pretty lightweight and probably not sufficient for stuff as heavy as this, but somehow all was unscathed. As mentioned before, the finish details (especially the paint job) could be better. The table and base are flat and nicely ground, and the table was set perfectly perpendicular to the chuck right out of the box. The unit runs smoothly and it is pretty quiet compared to my old drill press. Runout seems minimal. I didn't measure it, but I drilled several holes with an 8" long 1/2 inch bit, and the holes were round. The oscillating function is awesome and runs smoothly. I anticipate using it a lot. I shopped for a long time for a drill press, and even though some of the reviews on this unit were scary, I decided to take a chance due to the features I was looking for and the price. I am really happy with my choice. I think it is a very good value and I expect to use this tool for many years. ... show more

  • Great value. Terrible packing.
Style: Benchtop
I was very nervous to purchase this drill press, but it got great reviews elsewhere and had the capacity and features I need to complete the woodwoorking projects on my plate. PACKING/SHIPPING: Amazon did the best job they could in getting this to me undamaged. The manufacturer did not. The box the press was packed in had minimal cardboard and styrofoam - some of which was plainly broken. The table support. a heavy cast iron piece, had broken its styrofoam surrounds and was floating about. Thankfully it didn't damage itself or anything around it. The headstock has about a half inch of styrofoam in between it and the outside of the box - and this is where a delicate plastic housing is. Thankfully, it wasn't broken, and Amazon did their best in double boxing the junk box the thing was shipped in. INSTRUCTIONS: Others have complained that the instructions were out of date or hard to understand. Mine were neither - the press went together in about 30 minutes, including the time it took to wipe off the manufacturing and shipping grease. (Pro tip: wipe that junk off with naptha. Came out clean as a whistle.) There are photos to guide you through assembly and it even includes some tools to put it together. Points off: There are no instructions for installing the motor lock screw! There's also instructions on assembling the table lift crank - but it's already assembled. (2nd pro tip: don't overtighten ANYTHING. There is weak metal here and there and you don't want to strip a screw hole.) SUPPORT: I didn't need any, but kudos to a company that puts their email address and phone number on the front of the manual. Others have reported great customer service. BUILD: Mostly good. The base and table are cast iron, ground flat, and are pretty decent. The table support and headstock housing are also cast iron. The paintjob is mostly okay. I didn't buy it for its looks. The chuck is heavy duty 33JT tapered mount and gets the job done - for my use, it's perfect - but know that you have options to replace it if need be. You can spend the entire cost of the drill press on a keyless Jacobs, but it's not really necessary unless you're drilling metal to tolerances of .00001". The table adjustment mechanism works great for me. The crank lift is still breaking in, I think - it's still quite rough to move up and down, despite the grease I applied. I'm not sure it'll ever be perfectly smooth, and it's not a precision table height mechanism. OPERATIONS: Out of the box the press was very noisy. After determining that I had not installed the motor lock screw, I adjusted the motor mount bolts, and changed the motor speed by moving the belts. The press was instantly quieter with the belts properly adjusted for tension. I tried out the oscillator; it works as advertised and I see myself doing some drum sanding in the future. A few test holes in some scrap turned out great - this is a powerful drill with a heavy duty motor. I suppose a 1" Forstner bit in some oak might slow the drill down a little, but for general work, the drill didn't hesitate at all going through 3/4" of poplar. Quill operations leaves something to be desired; the handles are short and the quill just isn't as smooth as it could be. The quill return spring on mine was not an issue and returned it to the zero point every time. (Pro tip #3: after using the oscillator, manually rotate the pulley to return the quill to the zero point, so your depth stop works properly again.) Speaking of the depth stop....the sticker on mine is wrinkled a little, leading to an inaccurate depth. The stop mechanism is okay. OVERALL, I'm pretty happy with the build, capacity, the assembly and operations of the drill and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat given the chance. The shipping is terrible, but if you manage to get one undamaged....it's a great value for what it does. This press is quality enough to last for years and be handed down to my son when he's ready to start messing with wood projects. For now, I'm going to drill some holes in a solidbody guitar build I'm working on and enjoy the money I saved buying the Shop Fox. ... show more

  • Overall, a great product!
Style: Floor
The CONs: - No mortising attachment available. I even messaged the manufacturer and they told me it's because the quill is a smaller size than a typical drill press because of the oscillating feature. - The vertical travel is only 3.5". - I couldn't figure out what the thumb knob was that's on the height control... after talking to the manufacturer I now no it does nothing at all. It's leftover from a previous model's drill stop. - The tension spring for the return was sticking from the factory. I added a spray dry lubricant and tightened the spring by one notch and this took care of two issues in one: 1) the quill hadn't been travelling back to 0" on its own and 2) the oscillating feature was only travelling about 1/4-inch instead of the advertised 3/4" - Unless you buy specific Shop Fox sandpaper, the others that I have found readily available are 4-1/2" in length... and the Shop Fox brand sleeves are EXPENSIVE. Upon buying one set of replacement Shop Fox sleeves I also found that they really don't go on very easily either. This is really just nitpicking on my part because I can always get a replacement mandrel/sanding set from some other manufacturer - Some minor chipping on the finish on arrival - A built in light would have been nice The PROs: - Extremely well thought out! - Dust collector seems to work great when sanding - Two tools in one - Very solid build - I haven't put a dial indicator on it yet but based on a few trial runs with some Freud forstner bits, cuts very very clean holes ... show more

  • Everything was either easily corrected, or as stated in the specifications
Style: Benchtop
I read the reviews and spent a lot of time looking at other comparable drill press models (JET JWDP-12, Grizzly G7943, WEN 4214, GI 75-030, etc), This shop fox drill press in my mind, is reasonably priced, has a simple clean setup, and is a heavy duty machine. I am giving it five stars for its powerful motor and straightforward mechanical adjustments. I have used this machine heavily for many woodworking projects (plantation shutters, framing projects, etc.) as well as light duty metal work, and still stand by my the five star rating. I have rechecked the run-out on the spindle without the chuck attached and with the chuck attached, it is still within manufactures specifications. However, I do agree with other reviewers (one star reviews), damage to the drill press seems to occur somewhat regularly in the shipping process. The machine, when assembled weighs approximately 130lbs. The drill press has three pieces of plastic, the switch, the switch box cover(where the wiring is at), and the chuck safety guard. The rest of the machine comes comprised of large cast iron or steel items, with the lightest piece probably being 20 lbs. The machine comes with the motor/head-stock disassembled from the base and column. All three of these items are heavy, large and may have an awkward shape, with this definitely being true for the head stock piece. These three pieces and the rest of the drill press would be okay, if there was very little movement or abuse in the shipping process. However, I am not sure if this is possible, considering UPS/Fedex workers (drivers and warehouse packers) are trying to probably get there job done as quickly as possible to get back home to their families. The items in the box will eventually bang around against each other and breakdown the shipping material depending on the shipping process for the day. Once these pieces start hitting each other, your are absolutely guaranteed to have some type of damage, either cosmetic or affecting drill press operation. Thankfully for me, the customer service (Micheal) at ShopFox was outstanding, even though I bought online through a seller (Factory Authorized Outlet) on Amazon, they were willing to stand by the product and send me out replacement pieces for the damage items (luckily the damaged items did not require returning the whole drill press). I could see why some wrote a negative review, receiving a damaged product does not put a smile on your face. I tried to write this review in terms of my experience with operation of the drill press, this is why I gave it five stars. Once up and running, I checked the drill press for run-out, the angle of the table in relation to the drill bit, and depth of travel. Everything was either easily corrected, or as stated in the specifications. I did not have problems with excessive run-out (I read a review where it seemed this problem was present). Saying all that, I am a firm believer in using the right tool for the job. You have got to have understanding and knowledge in both to get a tool which suites your needs. This machine does not have a laser scribe/sight, digital RPM read-out, electronically controlled variable speed. I find this perfectly acceptable and do not consider them affecting drill press operation. I am impressed with the power of the motor and simplistic setup. ... show more

  • Heavy duty bench top! Heavy duty bench top!
Style: Benchtop
Great bench top drill press. Got rid of my floor press took up too much space. Mounted this on a rolling cabinet and gained more storage and organazation space! Also can move it easly if needed. Sander is a good benny to have. Debth guage is cheezy but i dialed it into my liking. Spindel is dead on and quiet motor. Minor ratteling from belt cover (im working on that). Packaged very well with no missing parts or damaged. Fingers crossed that motor does'nt go south! At 579.00 bucks its a great by for any skill leavel. Cons, no light, laser or automatic transmission to change speeds. I hope this review helps or inspires someone to utilize this press in a more practical way. It was worth the money so far...fingers crossed on motor again ... show more

  • I had higher hopes for this.
Style: Benchtop
It came poorly packaged from China. The box itself was of a terrible tissue like cardboard that was torn at every corner and across the face of the box. At first I thought to refuse it from the delivery man but needing the drill for a project I was working on did not allow me time to return it and wait for another to arrive. So I took the box and opened it, most of the contents were there and seemed alright except for the housing that contained the wiring and switch for the machine. It was shattered into so many pieces that it may have just been the pellets that they make the plastic out of thrown in the box before it actually was extruded. So I needed it for a job that was rush rush, so I put it together and did my work. After having owned the machine for almost a year now, I have these thoughts on the product. The manufacturer has given the producers of this product poor working tolerances and qc recommendations. I suspect the entire thing is made of pot metal cast iron. one handle was missing half the metal that should have been in it and it made it onto the product- bad quality control- think F when it should have looked like a P. The cast and milled table sits on a post that is then attached to a bracket that holds it to the main support pole of the machine. Mine unfortunately was milled a few degrees off of level to the post. I have to spin the table to a certain spot then change the angle of the table about 3 degrees to get it 90 degrees to the drill bit. Why did I include this? well, because I bought the product for the handy spindle sander feature of it. In order to use this feature you have to spin the table and move it every time you use it. thereby making me have to readjust the table to the bit when ever I have finished using that feature. The spindle sander feature has worked very well for me, I have my doubts on the longevity of the rubber o ring drive belt for it, but it has performed as I need it for the woodworking and light metal forming I have used it for. I found the weight and heft of this machine to be very nice for a bench top model, but do not expect to move it around often. It is very heavy. Would I buy this again if I needed too? Probably not from this manufacturer. For the price I paid, I could have gotten roughly the same quality drill press from northern tools and the 4x30 with 8 inch disc sander from harbor freight and saved some money. ... show more

  • Good Drill Press
Style: Benchtop
To start with I researched a lot of reviews like most people do, and also info on every other drill press out there. Every one of them that were in the price point as this one had there share of positive and as well negative reviews. I finally went with the Shop Fox mainly because of the specs for the motor & drill itself, taking a chance that I would receive it without being damaged. I'm happy to report that my drill press came undamaged with only a couple minor chips in the paint that I can easily touch up, it assembled easily by myself, and most importantly ran & drilled smoothly, also pleased with quietness of the motor. So for me at this price point and the overall experience with the purchase, quality, & setup (1 hour) I give two thumbs up !! ... show more

  • Mostly good, but ultimately unusable
Style: Floor
Package arrived a day early and intact. There were no missing parts. Assembly was straight forward. The manual was easy to follow, though made no mention of the spindle lock feature. The castings of the iron pieces are good. Table and base are flat. The package included 3 Allen wrenches and two stamped steel wrenches for assembly. The fit and finish leaves a bit to be desired with misplaced rivets for the front label and some rather large burrs on the holes tapped into the iron. Notably the motor tension screw hole. Following assembly I ran through the 'spindle break in' procedure as detailed in the manual. This involves running the machine for 10 minutes at its lowest speed followed by 5 minute runs at increasing spindle speeds. At low speed the machine ran very smoothly and quietly. As I adjusted up through the range however, the vibration became more and more extreme. Until at the top of the range the machine became unusable. Investigation into the problem revealed that the pulley assembly for the spindle has about a 16th of an inch wobble during its rotation. In addition to the vibration, this resulted in astonishingly quick wear on one side of the pully, with one of the flanges having been worn down to nearly a knife edge within the first half hour of me running it. I also noticed that the motor pulley seemed offset relative to the idler pulley by about half an inch. I went to remove the spindle pulley in an attempt to see if I could fix the woble by repositioning it, only to discover that the retaining nut wasn't even finger tight. Tightening this nut showed no improvement in the wobble. Incidentally, the pulleys seem to be cast from some pot metal alloy and have significant voids on the underside. I contacted Amazon customer service who subsequently directed me to call the company that distributes this machine. Of course their offices were closed. I will try again during business hours. At this price I wasn't expecting perfection, and I anticipated that I might need to do some work on it to get it running smoothly, but I didn't expect that it would arrive and be practically unusable. I'm going to give the company a chance to make it right, perhaps they can send me a replacement spindle pulley. Fixing the motor pulley is going to mean buying a gear puller though. Perhaps a refund of an amount that will cover that purchase? This is a 180 lb machine, disassembling it and shipping it back is not going to be fun. ... show more
