  • Burns up bits due to poor machining tolerances.
Style: Benchtop mortiser
The bits kept burning up. They were installed with correctly. Turned out that the fit between the collar and the bit had .007 clearance. When you tighten the screw that holds the chisel it shoves the chisel into the bit. The bit is held by the drill chuck and the chisel is held by the housing. Jet sent me new collars and Powermatic bits but same problem. The bit is installed with the recommended 1/16” clearance at the end for chip clearance. I put a .003 shim around the collar and reinstalled it and it’s fine. ... show more

  • Easy to set up and use
Style: Benchtop mortiser
The Jet JBM-5 Mortising machine is easy to assemble and set up. Its easy to use and pretty darn accurate once its set up. Initially there was some movement as I lowered the chisel. There's a small track that the upper assembly sides up and down on, and once I tightened the allen screws it helped. You need to mount the base onto a larger piece of MDF or plywood for stability. I do wish there was a bracket attached to the machine that could hold the chisels in place while not in use. Other than that, Its a good mortising machine ... show more

  • For the price, perfect!
Style: Benchtop mortiser
Based upon the build quality of my other Jet shop tools and on Amazon reviews, I selected this machine. I needed a mortising machine for a project of building 12 chairs. There are lots of rave reviews already out there, so I won't repeat all the good stuff. Just believe it! What I will do is to defend this little machine's only few weak spots, or at least the criticisms in the reviews. The main one is about the table being too small, and because it is made of MDF, "cheap." Well, the table is actually the cast iron base, and it has a piece of MDF bolted down to it to protect your chisels should you drill clear through a piece of wood. Others complain the table is too small. Not exactly sure why you would need it to be any bigger, but I had no issues with that doing 144 mortises in some pretty strange shapes of wood. The hold-down is, in fact, poorly designed, but it's such and easy fix that it is laughable. I just cut two small wedges of wood and installed them on the bottoms of the two hold-down arms (with a wrap of masking tape) so that now they press down evenly on the workpiece instead of only on the side toward the machine. End of difficulty extracting the chisel from the workpiece. For some of my pieces, to get them placed in the same spot each time, I used a drill-press vise bolted to the cast-iron table. I clamped a stop onto my work table to locate the end of the workpiece and the little vise did the rest. The three chisels that ship with this machine are incredibly sharp and worked perfectly. (I only used two of them.) The motor's power is more than ample, the machine is designed so that the pull-handle can be locked into whatever position that is the most advantageous for the situation. It does take a hefty pull, so that's important. For its low price, this is a terrific machine. I highly recommend it. BTW, it arrived from Amazon well-packaged and in perfect condition. And no, I didn't get paid to write this review; I just like to give praise when it's due! I'm giving 5 stars in spite of my only criticism, the hold-down, because it was such an easy fix, and also because had I wanted a more "perfect" mortiser, I could have paid $1000 for a professional machine. This is a tool I will not use every day, and for the price, it is perfect. I thought it was actually fun to use! Imagine drilling square holes! ... show more

  • Good Machine, Horible Customer Service
Style: Benchtop mortiser
Over the past three months, I have purchased 4 Jet woodworking machines, including this one to the tune of almost $2400. Until recently, I was planning to purchase a Jet Planer Molder and Performax Drumsander, but based on my recent experience with the WHM Tool Group, who makes this equipment, I am having second thoughts. Although I am for the most part happy with the machines I've purchased, when I was assembling my table saw, the fence that came with the saw did not match the one in the instructions, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time on hold with the WHM customer service department to find out how to mount it to the saw. I can live with that, but as I began to use the saw I discovered that although two arbor wrenches are required to change the saw blade, only one came with the saw. Although I don't think it is too much to ask that they throw in two $6 wrenches with a $1500 saw, I thought, I'd just order one from the WHM website. There I found that the Shipping for the $6 wrench would be $19.99. I sent a note to WHM regarding this requesting a reply, and did not receive one. When I called a week later, I was curtly told that the saw comes with only one wrench. When I asked why it would cost $20 to send a $6 wrench that would fit in a standard letter sized envelope, I was told that they do not ship via U.S Mail, and that was the end of the conversation. I ordered the wrench to the tune of $26.70, and was surprised again to find that it was back ordered with no expected date of delivery. I sent a copy of this rating to WHM tool group to give them a chance to respond, but again have received no response almost a week later. For what ever it's worth, if customer service is important to you and you don't want to have to purchase things that should come with the tool and then be charged three times the value of the item for shipping and handling you might want to consider another brand. ... show more
