Description

Remember when you could drill with maximum accuracy? Power through metal, wood, plastics, and more with the WEN 8-Inch 5-Speed Drill Press. Don’t let our compact design fool you. Between the five operating speeds, the two-inch spindle travel, and the sturdy construction, you’ll have way more precision than a standard handheld drill. Our 2.3-amp induction motor features ball bearings for smooth balanced performance even at high speed. Manually set your speed to either 740, 1100, 1530, 2100, or 3140 RPM by adjusting the belt position on the two spindles. The easy-to-read, locking depth stop allows for accurate and repeatable drilling operations. The keyed chuck with JT33 spindle taper accepts bits ranging from 1/20 to 1/2 inch in diameter (1.5 to 13 mm). The table bevels 45° left and right for angled drilling. The base is designed with holes for mounting onto a bench or work stand. Clamps and vises are easily mounted to the slotted table, making work-holding safe and effective. I purchased the 8-inch version of the Wen drill press and have been very pleased with it so far. I had seen it in the big-box store prior to purchasing it here on Amazon and I am glad that I purchased it on Amazon, it was $27 cheaper than at the store. So, that's pretty awesome! The overall construction is very good. The unit is nice and heavy, the base is super solid and supports the weight of the head of the unit very well. All of the castings are smooth and do not have any cracks. The baseplate might be small for some, but it's just about right for me. I plan on building a small fence for the bed so it will be extended anyways. Unfortunately, the bed of my unit does have some rust on it straight out of the box.(pictures) While it's a little bit of a bummer, it doesn't affect the performance of the machine. But it would be nice if it was rust free. I do have one slight complaint and it's mostly just because the lack of a feature. I am not a huge fan of how the depth guide works, the two nut setup is kind of a challenge to get right because the space is so tight to get a wrench in there. The nuts on my drill press were so tight, I had a hard time getting them loose in order to adjust the depth. If there was an alternate way to set the depth, or perhaps if the guide was moved outward a little from the head of the unit, that would make it easier to adjust. Once I freed the nuts, they have become a little easier to move, but the gap between the nuts / depth guide-rod and the head of the drill press is a little tight, so it does make getting the fingers in there a bit tight. It's doable though, just not ideal. Also, I do wish you could lock the drill press into a down position if you'd like, but it's not possible on this unit. Which I suppose is asking a bit much for something in this price range. I think you ptobsbly could add a nut at the bottom of the depth guide to act as a "lock" but other than that, it's not possible. All of the dials, nuts, bolts, belts and springs are extremely tight and adjusted just right. It's super sturdy as well as quiet, and it seems like it will serve it's needs very well.     • Wonderful Light-Duty Drill Press For Good Price

This is my first drill press. I don't need anything super big or heavy duty. I mostly do some small woodworking (like scroll saw work, etc.) and needed something to make small, precise entry holes at exact angles. I was pleasantly surprised when I received this drill press due to its heavy, sturdy base and construction. It does everything I need it to do and so far have been very pleased with it. The tilting table is sturdy enough for my needs. (I always use a digital inclinometer to set my angles because this is critical for the scroll saw bowls I make, so I don't care if the table gauge isn't exactly accurate.) The unit runs very smoothly and quietly. The assembly was easy and quick. The instruction sheet is fair (not great but adequate for anyone used to putting things together). The drill press has a depth setting adjustment, which I really like. I've had no problems with the chuck. Just be sure to follow the directions and remove all traces of manufacturing oil from the shaft and chuck before mounting it so it won't be likely to slip while in use. I haven't used it to drill anything super thick so far. Just mostly small entry wholes in hardwood. But so far no problems. I also use it with a 5-inch disc sanding kit that uses interchangeable hook-and-loop pads. I highly recommend this drill press to anyone needing something not too large or heavy duty. You know, when you spend this little money on a tool this big, you can't expect many features, however you must expect that it at least works. For the most it works well. It's silent, which is a great plus for these kind of tools. Silent I mean in the sense of the hatch to be rattling, it has some robber stops that prevent that, it's good in this regard. There are several gear speeds for you to manually adjust, but you will end up just putting in the middle and leaving it there for the rest of your life. Assembly was quite easy, quite intuitive. For better results you better buy those drill press vises, otherwise you will have to keep clamping your piece against the tiny bed which is a pain. There is no laser guide. All and all it's good, quite heavy, the extension down of the head is OK, can't tell it's great, but goes decently down. Once assembled, it could potentially fit inside a cabinet, but I never really tried, it stays on the ground here nearby with a plastic cover. I like this tool overall, and only one thing I don't like: For some reason it wobbles the head when you install the drill bit on it, It's just a little, but it does. It wasn't bad enough to ruin any of my projects, but wanted to note here. ... show more

There is not much to dislike on this. The durability is heavy, solid steel, fits perfect on a table top, very easy to assemble, the drill power is plenty for a garage or small work shop, this is enough for me. You can never go wrong with a table top drill it is worth buying. Great to have in your Garage, personal Workshop, Man cave, This is a must have Wen has a good reputation in making high quality stuff if your are looking for a good one this is it. I have owned a couple of Wen products and they have served me well for years. I was looking for a small drill press that I could just set on the workbench when needed and then stored on a wheeled cart with my belt and spindle sanders. This is a good deal for $100, nice features and well finished. If you need a drill vise for it use a 3 inch vise, Wen DPA423 is what Wen recommends. I mistakenly ordered the 4 inch and it was way too big. Amazon made returning the wrong one easy and the correct one shipped quickly. ... show more
