  • Battery powered lawn tools have come a long way
Size: 3-Piece Combo (2 x 2.0Ah)
Hitting my mid-30s, I became a bit of a curmudgeon when it came to yard work. I grew tired of all the noisy, unreliable, gas-powered equipment that constantly broke down. I decided to go full Luddite, swapping out my old tools for quieter, more reliable options like a 21-inch push-reel mower, a grass whip, and a long-handle scythe. These tools work great for most of my yard (though they certainly take a lot more time and effort!), which is just shy of 2 acres, but there are always those tricky spots near the vinyl siding or in tight corners that demand something more precise. That’s where the Greenworks 80V weed whacker comes in. It’s whisper quiet—quieter than my wife’s 20V and 40V weed whackers that are about 6 years old, and even quieter than my push-reel mower, which is absolutely insane that they managed to make the power tool that quiet! The battery lasts a solid 20-25 minutes of continuous (trigger down the entire time on the boost setting) use, even on thick, lush shade grass, and the same battery can power the blower afterward. Cleaning is easy, though there's a bit of a tricky spot where the guard connects to the shaft that gets grass debris wedged in there (yes I clean my tools after use, it's how you get them to last). The weed whacker is lightweight, easy to handle, and the auto-feed works well. I also use the battery-powered mower, which is well thought out and plenty powerful for typical suburban yard work (my yard is definitely not suburban and is too big for a battery mower). The grass clippings bag is easy to use and well-constructed, making clean-up simple. However, the mower is surprisingly loud—certainly not as loud as a gas mower, but louder than I expected after running the whisper-quiet weed whacker. The leaf blower, on the other hand, is surprisingly loud for a battery-powered tool and underpowered for the amount of noise it makes. It’s decent for light tasks but doesn’t quite meet my expectations in terms of power. The whacker works ok for dry grass but can't really blow other weeds around much, so it usually sits in favor of the rake or my 120v plug in blower. That said, having two batteries to swap between the weed whacker, mower, and blower is incredibly convenient, reducing downtime between tasks. Despite the blower's shortcomings, the reliability and quiet performance of the weed whacker and mower have made yard work something I actually enjoy. It’s good exercise, and the peaceful operation of these tools has turned a once-dreaded chore into a much more pleasant experience. ... show more

  • My only regret...not buying it sooner
Size: 21" Self-Propelled Mower (8.0Ah)
I was sick and tired of dealing with gas mower issues with carburetor or fuel line and what not. Took a leap of faith and all I can say is that I regret not taking this decision sooner. This mower is amazing!!! This is not paid review, I purchased this mower and writing my personal experience of using it. So far, I've mowed my lawn 5 times and am beyond delighted. I purchase 8Amps battery model and also purchased on 4 Amps battery just to be on the safe side. I have about 1/2 acre lot with some slopes here and there and 8Amps gets me thru it - Greenworks says it can mow 3/4 but I'm guessing that's in ideal conditions where land is flat, grass is not crazy tall and grass blades are not hard. This thins is powerful, way quieter than gas mower. One feature that I love above all is its ability to momentarily speed up motor the moment it senses resistance from grass...my gas mower would choke and stall where this mower cut thru like butter with increased speed. Other cool feature is that if you want to use the wheel power to move it, you can do that without having to spin the mower blade...it comes in handy when I'm move it back into garage after completing my mowing. I must say that Greenworks engineers and design team truly spent time and effort into making this awesome product, no corners were cut and its built solid, you would feel it. One tip, when your using self-propelled feature, don't try to move it back immediately after releasing the lever, wheels take a second or two to release. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good power and battery life
Size: 21" SP Mower (4.0Ah)
First use notes & impressions... Initial/first charge took 45min. Lasted almost 1 hour with minimal use of Self Propel (SP). Didn't need SP on many sections of my lawn since mower is pretty light weight. Immediately after use it took 60min to charge since battery was "hot" from use (not hot to the touch, just higher temp after use). Did Not bog down in thick, tall (6") grass -it seemed to rev up (higher rpm) on its own when hitting those patches, then returned to normal rpm in lower/thinner grass. So I did Not have to slow my pace that much in order for the mower to cut thru the thick & tall patches. Only shortcoming was that the rear wheels would often not roll backwards when I wanted to back up/reverse. They seemed to lock up (just for reversing) after using SP mode, but after a little bit they would eventually "unlock" and be able to roll backwards. My old gas mower with SP would do this but I just had to push the mower a couple feet after disengaging SP to free up the wheels. Haven't figured out the trick to make this new one unlock "on command". The manual didn't seem to say anything on that. So if Greenworks or anyone knows the trick to that please let me know. Update 5/10/24: Used about 3-4 more times since first use review. Overall rating unchanged despite some of the shortcomings and positives noted below. Some things I just have to get used to per how the machine was engineered and behaves. Found that it takes about 5 seconds after disengaging SP for the rear wheels to roll backwards freely. Also, it takes 2-3 seconds for the SP to actually kick in after you engage it. Found that it works quite well in damp grass -barely had to slow my pace despite it being a bit wet. ... show more
