Update 2023-11-30 - I've used this a few more times since my initial review, and I still think it's a 5-star product. Sure, you can't split very large logs with this, but if it fits into the frame, this will split it. Where this product really shines for me is with those non-perfect logs, that either have angles on both ends or are twisted, making them difficult to split with an axe or maul. If you have perfect, large logs, you might not need this. Most of the wood that was delivered to me is twisted, knotted, and most ends aren't cut straight. This log splitter does what I can't do with an axe or maul. And with less effort; as the split parts aren't flying all over the place. Nearly all of the split wood stay in or near the frame, making it easier to pick up. -- Previous review -- Cutting wood is one of those romantic notions in movies that looks like something heroes do when they have nothing else to do or are brooding. In the real world, chopping wood with an axe is hard work. Sure, it can be done, but it's the little things that make you work more than you need to. Rarely do you get to work with wood that is cut perfectly perpendicular to the axis and balances perfectly on our chopping stump. Usually, for me at least, what happens is the log I placed on the chopping stump won't stand up because it's cut on an angle - on both ends. The log usually falls over before I can swing and make the cut. While it won't do large logs, this log splitter is much nicer to use than the 'splitting dance' you need to do when cutting wood. Place your log into the top and lean it up against the side so it's mostly upright, then whack it with a sledgehammer. Works great. I was able to split about a dozen logs in less than half the time doing it the traditional way. When assembling this, I had a little issue getting all the bolts to line up into the threaded holes. Once they were all in, they tightened with no issues, but keep them loose until all of the bolts are started. The carrying case is a nice touch. It came with an extra bolt and four screws if you wanted to mount this on a stump. Keeping this hardware and the hex wrench for the bolts with the splitter is much easier when it's all in the carry case. Would I buy it again or recommend this to friend: Yes.

The quality of this splitter is great. It's relatively sturdy, as well. The assembly also took me no more than about 10-15 minutes. The spliiter works well and does split efficiently BUT the logs do get stuck quite frequently. As the logs split, they will expand outwards and jam up in the splitter - so be mindful of this. I found the best way to avoid this is to use logs that have a diameter buffer. I try to use logs at least 4 inches less in diameter than the max that the splitter will allow. Now, although this does a great job, would I buy it again? No, I would not. At least not in its current form. If they were to manufacture an open-top version, then I would since it would allow me to actually split larger logs.

The product does seem to live up to all expectations. It was simple to assemble, works as advertised (only on dry wood), is sturdy, does a great job splitting kindling down the grain, is probably a bit safer than an axe or maul, and all of that. It's just not nearly as efficient as a splitting maul is. There's just less work using the maul, less time handling the wood, etc. This product may be a good idea for people with small wood stoves who really need lots of kindling and aren't necessarily strong enough to smash through logs with a maul.

The Greener xl log splitter is amazing. I thought it would not be stable and secure since it is not a solid piece and it requires assembly, but it is super easy to assemble and it is really strong, really secure and not at all wiggly. This log splitter is the widest log splitter I have had, which is nice because it was do logs that are up to 10 inches wide, but I did wonder how easy it would be for me (female) to use. Surprisingly, this was the easiest wood splitter for me to use. I tested a couple of them, using the same mallet (not included) for them all and I only had to take 3 swings of the mallet on the Greener log splitter, whereas I needed to do about 6 to 7 swings on the other ones and the other ones had a smaller diameter so they were smaller logs. This log splitter is amazing! It also has a bag that has a drawstring closure for storage and easier to tote around. The bag does not have a handle, but you can carry it by the drawstrings. This log splitter is very easy to use. Simply set a log on the top, use a mallet or hammer to pound the log down into the splitter. If you use a large enough log, you dont even have to hold the log because it will rest on the cutting blade and then balance in the upper ring. If you use a narrow log then you may have to hold the log to keep it balanced. With a couple of normal strength hits, the log will split and fall away. Then you put another log and repeat. It is nice that the logs fall away and you dont have to remove the split logs from the rings. You can keep splitting wood very quickly and efficiently and only have to kick the logs away with your feet. The base is very wide and very stable and you dont even need to use the provided screws to secure it into place, but it is an option. I used this directly on the ground and it was perfect.

This item came as described and was actually quite a bit heavier than I was expecting (in a good way). I was pleased that the overall quality appeared sturdy and it was super easy to assemble. It even came with some little wood base pieces that you could screw it into to keep it sturdy. I am still getting the hang of using this, but the seems to be more my issue than that of the tool. I've split a few logs and it does get the job done, though I'd suggest looking at the measurements closely before buying, as a few of my logs were too big to fit through the ring. So, this is not the tool for splitting big logs, but rather turning smaller logs into kindling. It does seem to be a good value for the money compared to items I've seen locally at hardware and farm stores.
