Early days with the new cam. This replaces the original outdoor nest cam (battery powered) that we had hardwired a couple of years back. No issues with the install, just takes time to run the power line cleanly. The overall video quality is noticeably better than the old one. Much crisper image. Field of view is wider so we can see more. Night vision is also better. I haven’t signed up with the higher end service from Google, so I am missing out on some of the Gemini AI features, but so far so good. Will update as we get more time with this new camera. ... show more

The video quality of this camera is amazing! I own many much cheaper security cameras from brands such as Tapo and Wyze and while those cameras work great as well, they struggle with high dynamic range situations where there is a darker porch and daylight sky visible at the same time which often causes the sky to be completely blown out. This camera is able to show both darker and bright areas in the video frame at the same time without blowing out the colors of the bright areas while also not making the darker areas too dark. Setup is super easy and you simply go to the Google Home app and add a new device and the camera is quickly found and paired. I have found notifications to be very quick and I consistently get notified within 1 second or less of a motion event happening. I have also found the vehicle and person detection to be much more accurate than my cheaper cameras and the camera is able to identify a person even if they are far away and not very clearly in frame of the camera. The only complaint I have about this camera is the limited on board storage. There is no expandable storage so you are limited to the on board storage which only saves events from the past 6 hours. This is an improvement over the 2nd Generation Nest Cam which could only save events from the past 3 hours locally. If you want longer term storage, you unfortunately have to pay Google for a subscription. However, I'm pleased to see that even if you do not subscribe to any plan, you still get rich notifications when motion is detected, where you can see a short clip of the motion event directly from your notification. Overall, this is a very expensive security camera but if you value very high quality security footage, this is definitely a camera worth considering. ... show more

There's alot packed into this camera. It's heavy... it feels well built, it looks good. The second you try to integrate this, it's asking you if you want to pay for Gemini and Google Home subscriptions. Not a good look. Unlike other Google devices which only take a minute or two to install, this one took a long while... disappointing. As you're cycling through all the mumbo jumbo, which I actually read... you find that the camera is only rated for 104 degrees F maximum. How can an outdoor camera not be rated for outdoor conditions? Almost anywhere in the nation can exceed 100 degrees during the summer. What I do like about it though is the easy integration through my Google Hub display. In this case, since it wont withstand the heat, it ended up replacing our Wyze cam for the baby monitor. Motion notifications are instant and work well for this purpose. Without signing up for any contracts, you get 3 hours of recording, which is pretty mediocre, but it works. Install was a breeze, just find a stud and screw the base into the wall, snap the camera on and plug it in. The cord comes with cable management clips so you don't have to worry about the 20 feet extra getting in the way. Overall, the video quality is a bit worse than my Wyze cam. Those are typically 40 bucks.... this camera is 150. Seems a bit outrageous. If this camera was half the listed price, I'd say go for it. The integration is nice, it looks good.... but they want WAYYY too much, and even more for their subscription services. Drop the camera to 60-80 bucks and I'd recommend it. Beyond that, I really can't justify the price. This feels like a cash grab operation by Google. Video quality is par. It looks about the same quality as the video that comes out of my Google Hub. ... show more

I'm very confident in what I'm about to say after having extensively used this outdoor camera by Google for a couple of nights. In short, this is the kind of device one would and should get if they are neither tech-savvy nor minds being on a subscription model for throughout the user's intended use cycle of these cameras. In fact, it's really a no-brainer if they are already invested in Google's or Google-adjacent Smart Home ecosystem. There's no need to own a separate, costly NVR system upfront to get their own home surveillance up and running. It will offer a sleek, turn-key experience from start to finish requiring only that the user install and power these cameras on. That said, these costs will quickly add up over the years with the added caveat of all of the user's data wholly dependent on Google's data centers and discretion. Those who value privacy and independence from a third-party vendor would do well in looking elsewhere entirely. And at a budget too as these cameras are very pricey at least for the time being. All in all, I decided to award it 3 out of 5 stars. Despite being 2nd-gen, these cameras are impressive neither in build nor in function. My existing outdoor cameras that are based on technologies from at least a decade ago either match or exceed any of the functions offered by that of these Nest cams. This seems to be in line with Google's many product offerings to date as they seem to place more value in software sophistication than on physical hardware.
