This is a great value tatami mat for the money. If you have ever bought one before, you know how expensive they can be. I placed it on top of a simple wood bedframe, and then a futon matress on that, to create a bed with a "Japanese-style" feel to it. Will it last forever? No. When I fold and unfold it I can hear some of the hot glue that holds some of the fabric tabs down cracking. Not a big deal. If they ever pop up I'll just glue them back down. I don't plan to fold it up hardly ever. That being said, it shouldn't deter you. If you are a person who takes care of their things and doesn't abuse them, you should get quite a bit of use out of this mat. it's fairly sturdy. It looks very nice. The weave quality is very nice and there are no stems or anything sticking out to poke you--perfectly smooth. From just looking at it and feeling the top surface you'd think it was more expensive. One warning: it has a VERY strong tatami grass smell. If you have ever been inside a Japanese building will full tatami floors, you know what this smells like. I used to live in Japan and I find the smell calming, but I could definitely see other people being turned off by it because it's rather pungent. It smells like boiled/cooked dry grass.

I had been wanting a tatami mat for my J Life futon but the price was holding me back. I was pleasantly surprised to find for such low price, especially for a queen. The mat arrived in good condition, no unpleasant smells, and it perfectly fit my queen size futon.

For the dollar spent this is a very comfortable mat. There may be better finish qualities in more expensive products, but for the dollar spent it is a great value. Just know it is slightly larger than a standard twin mattress. So if you're going to put it on a platform or frame measure them first.

I got this product to go along with a separate purchase I made for a Japanese futon mattress. The tatami mat was lightweight and effortless to set up on the floor. For a bit though, I didn't mind the smell, I actually thought it was kind of nice. But after a few days, the smell was definitely STILL fresh and it kind of bothered me a little. I can say this might be because I used it right away after opening it from its packaging. After airing it out for a bit, I used it again and it was alright afterward. Great product regardless and you get your money's worth for the great quality! :)

The twin size folded up easily for storage in my closet. The surface is firm, but causes no pain — I coupled this with a shikofuton and had a wonderful night of sleep. However, this mat really does have an unpleasant smell, kind of like a litter box. It is not unbearable, especially if you have a futon on top, but I hope it airs out soon.

I fell in love with tatami the first time I went to a Japanese restaurant and we were seated in a tatami room. I love the aroma of the igusa grass, which I find very relaxing; and I love that it provides a yielding surface upon which to walk, sit or lay. I intend to get a shikibuton (Japanese futon) to use with this for sleeping, but for now, I shall be using it as a surface upon which to lay my handwoven yoga mat; or to sit for meditation, or chanoyu (tea ceremony). Paired with futon, it will make a great guest bed, or be perfect for me if my back acts up. It's light weight enough that I can easily lift and carry it, and is not too thick to store conveniently behind furniture when it's folded up. It appears to be well made, and I love that there's a non-slip surface on the lower side of the mat. It appears to be an excellent value. Thank you for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.

This is a good quality tatami mat at an excellent price. This mat smells beautifully fragrant— it has that distinct sweet tatami scent right out of the box. This works with my shikibuton perfectly— it adds support and additional cushion to the floor. The design of this mat makes it very easy to store. It folds down to be quite compact— I have mine slid under a piece of furniture when not in use. A floor mattress makes a really unique guest bed and I find it much more comfortable than an air mattress. I love mine!
