I bought this for two reasons. The first reason was pure function. We needed a hose that would reach the burn out in the back yard. I don't care what the weather is or has been, if you're going to burn you need to have a hose handy...and notify your local fire department so when some not-so-rural passersby see white smoke and call the FD, the FD will know it's youmand white smoke tends to indicate nothing amiss. Safety first but functionality makes that a lot easier. The other reason for purchasing it is because SOME PEOPLE, who shall remain nameless, don't know what it means to finish the job. As with any job, once the work part is done the cleanup part begins. Only once everything has been out back units place is the job done. As it pertains to a hose, that usually involves wining it back up on a manual hose reel, which isn't all it's cracked up to be, as most such reels aren't exactly ergonomically friendly, and can be a lot more work than they appear. For those already averse to the cleanup phase of the job, those cheap manual reels provide additional motivation for them to not do so. Lazy! I'm saying it's lazy! Because it is. Don't be lazy. But if you must be lazy then this reel is for you. You don't have to do any winding. Just give it a slight pull outward, being careful not to pull it out too far (The Giraffe has a marker on it to show you when you've reached that point). That pull releases the mechanism and begins to pull the hose back onto the protected reel. I recommend walking the nozzle end of the hose back to the Giraffe with you, and turn off the water to the Giraffe. Once water is off, squeeze or open the nozzle to release the pressure and keep it open as the hose retracts onto the reel. This helps the hose to fit better in the housing and makes it easier for the reel to retract it properly. The Giraffe a has a spooler which guides the hose back and forth on the reel to ensure a proper retraction and storage. Keep a hand on the hose as it retracts so that it doesn't slam when the built-in and adjustable stopper reaches the housing. One of the best features of the Giraffe is that the entire reel, hose and housing are removable by simply loosening the set screw which retains it on the mount. You can the lift the housing, reel and hose off from the mount and store them in a shed, garage or basement for the winter, helping it last longer by keeping it from being exposed to extreme elements. The until comes with a 4-5' leader hose which allows you to hook it up easily to a nearby spigot. I've had mine for about 3 years now and have a shutoff valve in-line ahead of the leader hose. That way I can cut off the water to the unit without having to walk to the side of the house to get to the spigot to which it is attached. It's all about convenience and that's arguably the best benefit of the Giraffe. It's held up great, serves the purpose, is aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. So save yourself the extra work if you're a finish-the-job type, and make it easier or those who...well...lazy.

I really love this hose reel. It was easy to install on my stucco wall. Having 90 feet of hose makes it easy to get to most of my back yard. I like the spray nozzle and the lever for stopping and starting the spray. I think it is better quality than some I've seen. The hose is easy to pull out and stops when I stop pulling it out. I can continue to pull out longer and stop again as many times as I need to. Easy to get hose to reel back in. It's a pretty powerful pull so it's best to walk it back instead of just releasing. I have another one from another brand I purchase about 5 years ago and it still works great. I went with Giraffe because the other brand was discontinued and this seemed like better quality than some others. The strength of the water stream with the 5/8" hose is great!

I bought the PRO version with 90 ft hose and metal bracket so it's pretty rigid and sturdy - I can't comment on plastic version of that bracket as I don't have it. The installation is very simple because there is a template showing exact locations of the holes. The weight of the unit is forcing the user to use a solid support and I attached it directly to the old tree as his was the most optimal location for my watering needs, and I used a short pigtail hose with a quick connection to run the water from the fauces located on the wall of house to the tree. The instruction says that it can me mounted to a square pole, but I wouldn't do it. The hose retracts, rolls back and works like it supposed to, but there are two things that is don't like, and that I think could be improved. 1) There is significant loss of water pressure caused by the smaller diameter of the hose. My hose is 5/8", but I've read on the internet that longer hose can get smaller diameter that is 1/2" which may reduce pressure even more. 2) The unit doesn't fold flat when not used so it will not stay parallel to the surface of the wall it's attached to. This is a big disadvantage that could be easily fixed by designing a deeper mounting bracket. Overally, I'm glad that I bought it, but this product could be even better if a few improvements were made.

While this may be one of the less expensive brands out there (when on sale), it is a pretty good value option for a retractable garden hose. I bought 2 of these a couple of years ago on Prime day I think (slightly different options -- hose length and diameter) for the front and back yard. I wanted to replace the manual wind garden hose boxes since my wife had trouble retracting hoses manually. These were on sale at Amazon so I thought I would try it. Installation was pretty easy. Works great! While the build quality may not be AAA++, I am sure some compromises had to be made on the hose (to make sure it is flexible enough to retract well enough), cost effectiveness, and overall weight. The uploaded photo is of an issue I had with the garden hose after 22 to 23 months. I contacted the company's after sale support and they sent us a brand new replacement of the total unit -- I guess just the hose isn't serviceable. The unit was even easier to install since I am using the same brackets. I am sure some will say the hose should have lasted longer, but you know what, I use the garden hose very frequently. Also, we are in California where it gets pretty hot, and it is a good price on sale. They stood behind their product so I can't complain and that is why I am writing this review. Even 22 to 23 months in on a 24 month warranty, they sent me a full replacement and I received it within a week after I submitted the warranty claim. Just FYI. the other retractable hose I got from them has no issues -- well, maybe the nozzle needs to be replaced, but those are cheap (heh heh) any I always replace those after a few years anyways. I am happy and fully satisfied with my purchase. :)
