  • 10/10 would recommend
Style: RG40XX H-Blue
I've always wanted a way to play old games, and this does that very well. I've had no battery or performance issues like some other reviews said. Mainly got this for GBA and it works VERY well on this handheld. DS is ok but some games (stylus-based ones) are straight up unplayable. 10/10 would recommend. ... show more

  • Short battery life
Style: RG40XX H-Blue
Battery only lasts about 1 hour on full charge. Also have been finding more and more games on this not functioning properly. A good amount of games allow you into them and to start play but then none of the game functions work when trying move or play.

  • A disappointment
Style: RG40XX H-Gray
One dead pixel in the center of the screen and horrendous light bleeding on black screens. Diagusting display of quality control. I’ll be asking for a refund.

  • Pretty cool game system
Style: RG40XX H-Blue
This is a really cool game system. We got it so that my younger son could take it to daycare on electronic days. It is extremely light weight. So far it has been extremely durable and the battery lasts for a while. We love that it has a lot of games included and you don’t have to switch out cartridges. It’s pretty easy for my younger son to navigate. My son loved the rainbow lights. There are a few cons for our family. There seems to be a lack of family oriented games on this. There are a few but not many. I also don’t like that the games that we have played so far the game system has to be played vertically instead of horizontally. It’s a little harder to play imo. Overall I think it is a good purchase especially for the price. ... show more

  • The RG40XX-H is the best sub-$100 Anbernic yet
Style: RG40XX H-Blue
This is another handheld gaming console from Anbernic, with the same chipset contained in the RG35XX series (as well as the RG28XX and RG40XX-V). The first two numbers after the “RG” are the screen size in inches, so this unit has a 4.0” screen. In terms of size, I included a picture comparing it to the RG40XX-V and RG35XX Plus. All units to date use the H700 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 and have GPUs. This unit has trigger bumps on the back of the ‘40XX-H which a spot for your fingers to rest against as you hold the unit. I don’t have large hands, but I found this to be more comfortable than the vertical RG35XX-H, and also more comfortable than the RG40XX-V (Vertical edition, shown in in some pictures in white). I don’t “pocket” these, but you can if you’re wearing something with ample pockets. The shoulder buttons are digital and in a stacked configuration, and I think they are very comfortable and helpful to hold the console in comfort. The rounded ends featured in this design are very well thought out and feel ergonomic to me. The triggers are ‘clicky’ when actuated, and it means this may not be the best unit to use in bed if your partner is a light sleeper. The D-Pad and ABXY buttons are quiet and smooth, even if I find the D-Pad a bit stiffer than ideal — but that’s my preference. I’m not fond of the thumb sticks, but they work fine. They feel “abbreviated” to my thumbs, and have a limited range of motion. Another quirk is that the right stick feels tighter than the left, and I found this to be the case across two RG40XX-H units I’ve used. The RGB LED surrounds on the sticks are colorful, but I turned the brightness down and may end up turning them off. They are easily adjusted in the options menu that pops up from the [ST] button when not in a game. Still, the sticks are low enough that I wouldn’t worry much about slipping this in my pocket, and that’s a plus. I’ll take this shorter stick action for portability. The onboard audio is ok, but the headphone jack provides excellent sound according to your earbuds’ or headphones’ quality. The stock software is fine. I actually like this version and have stuck with stock even though there are alternate options available. The stock card is missing some games you might expect, like games about plumbers, but I’m going to assume that you always put your own files on devices that you sourced from your personal cartridge collection. I tested some of the versions that came stock, and there are some variations, such as PS Portable GoW Chains of Olympus which has had the audio stripped presumably to make the game run smoother — and it’s smooth enough for the first section. Other stock selections here and there have issues, but since the point is to use the games you own that shouldn’t be an issue. The console’s sleep function seems decent. This has been an area sorely lacking in previous Anbernic software versions— on the Linux side of things at least— but this is solid. To me, this is Anbernic’s best sub-$100 handheld to date — and I like it more than the RG40XX-V. I think this feels more premium than the “V,” but that is very subjective and very much my personal view. It feels more “solid” and less “empty” to my hands, and I really like this blue colorway. I normally prefer black handhelds, but I took a chance with this blue (and my V’s white colorway), and I think it looks great — but feels even better in my hands. Good Job Anbernic! I think this is as good or better than any Linux based handheld you’ve done (I go back to the OG RG350). ... show more
