I’ve been using a very basic ghd flat iron for more than 20 years, so I already know the brand well and have always respected it. My old one was still good, but after that long it was obviously time for an upgrade. I debated whether this model was really worth the price difference — and after using it, my answer is absolutely yes. For context, I’m 52, post-menopausal, with fine hair that can be a little frizzy and slightly unruly. My hair is cut into a chin-length bob, and because I wear it sleek and polished, a flat iron is not an occasional tool for me — it’s part of my regular routine. So when I say I noticed a difference right away, I really mean it. The very first thing that stood out was the glide. This moves through the hair much more smoothly than my old iron. There’s no tugging, no catching, and no dragging. It feels far more refined, and that alone makes styling feel easier and gentler on the hair. The second thing I noticed was that I needed fewer passes. In most areas, one pass was enough. That was a big deal for me. With my older iron, I often had to go over sections more than once to get the finish I wanted. With this one, the hair looked sleek much faster. The only places where I did a couple of extra passes were my cowlicks and the more stubborn areas around my front sections — but even there, it still performed better and faster than what I had been using. That combination of smoother glide and fewer passes is exactly what makes this feel worth the upgrade. It’s not just about convenience. It also makes me feel better about what I’m doing to my hair over time. Less friction and less repeated heat is always a good thing, especially as hair changes with age. I also noticed that my finished hair looked shinier, sleeker, and more polished. The overall result was smoother and more refined, with less of that slightly dry or overworked look that can happen when you have to keep going over the same sections. My hair just looked better. Another thing I appreciate is how well-balanced the tool feels in the hand. It feels substantial and high quality without being awkward to use and it's definitely a perfect weight, not heavy at all. The overall build feels premium, which is what I would expect at this price point. It heats up reliably, performs consistently, has a long, user friendly cord and feels like a serious styling tool rather than just a basic flat iron. As far as value goes, this is obviously not inexpensive. But for me, this is the kind of purchase where the difference is clear almost immediately. If you use a flat iron regularly and care about smoothness, efficiency, and how your hair looks afterward, the upgrade makes sense. I questioned the price before buying it, and now that I’ve used it, I don’t question it anymore. I’m genuinely so happy with this purchase. I already liked ghd, but this made me realize just how much better a more advanced version can be when you actually put it in your hands and use it on your own hair. This is the most $$$$ flat iron I’ve ever bought but it’s worth every penny. Heats almost instantly, auto shut off, exterior is cool so no accidental skin burns. Works great, my hair gets very smooth and straight with fewer passes because the temp is perfect to do the job without damaging my hair.

It feels like a professional tool right from the start heats up quickly and glides through the hair very smoothly without pulling or snagging. What I noticed right away is how even the heat feels. Wish I can give it 10 stars. My hair is thick, north african, curly hair. I can’t believe I can straighten it quickly with 1-2 passes! I pair it with l’oreal heat protector and finish it with hair serum for the flyaways, but it stays soft and healthy looking for days!! It’s also so easy to curl your hair with one twist. Very versatile, smooth, and leaves the hair shiny unlike other big brands. Perfect temperature and I don’t have to worry about figuring out which temp to set it to I’ve been using it for months now and still excited! I finish my hair perfectly in 20 mins! I don’t dread it anymore. The picture is showing my natural hair and my straightened hair that took me ~10 min. It functions really well. Takes less than a minute to heat up. You can just place it on any surface as it’s designed in a way to not leave burns. HIGHLY recommended and saves you the salon money over time! ... show more

UPDATE 2024: They've lost a customer for life. It's 2024, this $300 straightener has been replaced once because it pulls hair (look at picture), it's a design flaw that was unchanged when we finally got our replacement (process took over a month). This replacement has now, multiple times, done this "overheating" failsafe immediately after it's plugged in. That's on top of the pulling because they didn't design the body properly or chose junk materials. DO NOT BUY THIS. The GHD we had before this lasted over 5 years for half the price and never pulled or failed in any way until it finally did. 2023: Bought this for my wife last year, as her previous GHD Straightener finally stopped working. I want to say we paid about $200 for that, and it lasted something very impressive; like 5 years+. This one, however, the GHD Platinum+ Professional Performance 1" Smart Styler has been trouble since the start. Immediately, the thing was grabbing her hair as the straightened. Annoying, but she dealt with it because when I contacted GHD it would have been this whole process where I wasn't sure I'd get a brand new one in return. Despite there clearly being a defect as the previous 1" GHD didn't grab her hair. Now, after almost a year of owning, this thing won't even turn on. It flashes red or something similar she said. Not only is newer, but it's also more expensive and supposedly "smarter" than the old model that worked flawless until it didn't. I would not recommend getting this. Now, I have to go through warranty pains on something that I never should have. What's worse, is I'm sure they won't send her one in the meantime. I had very high hopes for this straightener, but it is not what I was expecting. Not for this amount on money. It is ok, but I also bought a Babyliss for 1/4 of the cost, and it works better. This one is ok, and I guess I'm going to keep it, but it doesn't straighten my hair with one pass that's for sure. It also snags on my hair, doesn't flow on it smoothly, and as another reviewer stated, you have to keep moving quickly or it leaves dents in your hair, which is hard to do when it doesn't flow on the hair smoothly. I got a good deal on it for getting an Amazon Visa, but otherwise it would go back. It also doesn't straighten my hair flat, it still has poof to it, and has almost a dry frizzy look, and the flatness I do get, doesn't last long. Kind of disappointing but on the plus side, I guess my hair FEELS smoother. Doesn't look it, but it FEELS it. It also heats very quickly so I guess that is another plus. ... show more

so i had a chi which was over 15 years old and it was time to update. Was looking for something a little less bulky and just "newer" and "updated" as things are always improving. I LOVE the Dyson hair dryer and it was well worth the extra money. so i researched the flat iron as well and the reviews were less than impressive for the Dyson. There were actually demonstrations on youtube where the Dyson was compared to another product and the results were almost identical and some where the other product actually looked better! I realized the "other" product being used in most of those demos was this one! and HALF the price. so while still not "cheap" I feel its a good investment and being that I kept my last flat iron for so long, its not anything i plan on having to replace anytime soon. so worth the extra money up front. It heats up super fast and is easy to hold and move around. This is important when one is doing their own hair. the ones w/ the steam that use "water pods" for example only have it come out of one side of the unit, so if the unit is turned around, its not always the same effect. a product is needed that is easy to move and turn it around to get all the angles needed when one is doing their own hair; especially the back and harder to reach areas. this is light enough weight and easy to maneuver. it has only one heat setting but it got my hair just as straight if not a better effect than the previous ones at a much higher setting so i would think this one is much better for my hair. My style holds for a couple of days until its time to wash again. it also comes w/a rubber protector for the front of the unit. I would still wait until it cooled down but this is great for storage and travel to keep the unit "closed" when not in use. very glad i found this. if wishing to spend the money, for anyone who uses a flat iron, this is also a great high end gift ... show more
