  • 6000 Btu unit vs the 5000 btu unit
Style: Mechanical Controls Color: White
Trying to review 6000 btu unit and Amazon keeps redirecting me to the older 5000BTU unit I bought previously to edit it. Why? they are not the same? I bought the "used/return" version of the 6000 btu electronic control unit for $70 off the new price. One star to Amazon for sending me an "acceptable" unit and it's not acceptable. Shipped it in a plain box with no packing so arrived with dents. Also came with no intallation kit, no remote or instructions. Not acceptable guys. Since I needed an air conditioner and since I didn't feel like hauling it back to UPS and since I don't like the fan fold side extensions, I kept it though I wish now I had sent it back and made them eat the freight both ways. As for the unit itself it"s pretty good. Keeps the bedroom at 68 degrees and the rest of the 1400sf house at 75 to 76 degrees. Runs at around 505 to 514 watts putting out 42 to 48 degree air. Dislikes: the ECO mode shuts off the unit when it reaches 68 degree set point and then doesn't restart even though the temp gets above 73 or higher. Starts immediately when switched to Cool mode. On low speed the fan is sort of loud and high pitched like its running on high when it's not. I would probably buy it again at the discounted price. As for the 5100 btu model-- I bought it to put in our bedroom as my girlfriend likes it 70 degrees while I am comfortable in 78 degrees. It's too small for the job. I have to shut the bedroom door to keep it at 70 degrees which means the central unit still comes on to keep the rest of the house at 76. I bought a "used" unit for $117. It appears to have come in original box unopened, but there was a hole punched in one side of the box and the rear coil had a flattened area on the fins about 1" x 4". I straighted the fins with a pocket knife (never had much luck with fin combs) and installed the unit with no problems. The unit runs at 390 to 460 watts which is less than previous similar units which usually run at 460 and up. It runs very quietly on low. The main beef with this one is the outlet vent doesn't have up and down vane adjustment--just side to side. Also, the new 6000 btu unit seems to put out a lot more cold air for another 60 watts or so I would probable go the the 6000btu minimum in the future. I may swap the units out to see if the smaller unit will do better in the smaller bedroom/house. ... show more

  • Good buy. Works great... Good buy. Works great...

The ONLY issue I have is that I can't adjust the direction of the air up or down. I can left to right, but not up or down. I have a tall bedroom window ((5 ft tall), and the sill is barely 2 ft off the ground) so I would have liked to tilt the air flow up a little bit, but I can't. Other than that? It's doing an amazing job. Because it was shipped I let it sit for a few hours with just the fan on before I turned on the AC unit, (let the refrigerant settle), and just the fan was cooling the room. Most AC units will pull air from outside, push it through a coil that's super cooled, and push it into the house. This one pulls air from inside the house through the front, cools it, and then pushes it out. Just the fan lowered the temperature a couple degrees, because it was pulling ou the hot air, and blowing it back out cooler than when it went in, and when I finally did turn on the AC unit, it REALLY cooled down quickly. In fact, I forgot to turn it turn the first night and woke up the next morning to a freezing cold room. It's a little beast. ... show more

  • Takes a beating and still works
Style: Mechanical Controls Color: White
I recently got this small air conditioner for my girl's dorm room. Yes, un-air conditioned in this day and age. Most dorm rooms are small, and hers is no exception, and the Indiana summers can be hot and humid. If you have asthma, that isn't a good combination. So an A/C unit it is. I looked at many brands and features, manual controls or remote controls. I settled on this one for several reasons. First, it was GE, a known brand and likely reliable. Second, its cost; not cheap and not expensive. Third, small size; it easily fits in her dorm window. Manual controls didn't matter, since it's just an arm's reach away. Really, they will set it and leave it alone. So no need for a remote control, with the added expense. Installation was easy. A bracket or retaining strip is screwed to the top with three screws (supplied, naturally). There are other bolts included to secure the unit to the frame of the window once you have it in place. (Drill the holes as needed.) The two side accordian-like pieces, which are stretched out to fit the window width, attach by sliding them down the side of the unit -- no tools for that. A frame is popped onto the sides, and it's good to go. The window closes onto the top retaining strip, and you're done. Pay attention and use good sense when setting the unit into the window. We didn't, and let it drop right out the window because we both let go at the same time, before securing it well. It's back-heavy, and did a nice thud onto the ground outside. "DOA" we both thought. But no, apparently this unit is rather rugged (or we were just lucky) because once we retrieved it and properly secured it, it came on and started cooling. Plus-one for GE. Since few things are perfect, I'd say the little flaps at the side are the weak spot. They aren't as flexible as they should be and the way the frame attaches to them is rather flimsy. It was a small struggle getting them to properly extend and stay extended. Duct tape truly is a helpful product. ... show more

  • Nice and cold!

Got the job done during the summer time. I would recommend going bigger if wanting to cool a larger space but for a room size it kept the room cold.

  • Helped my neighbor out!!! - Great Unit - for its size
Style: Mechanical Controls Color: White
We had central ac in our home- We actually bought this as a back up -why? We used to lose power a lot 3 times for multiple days - so we had purchased a few of those Lipo 4 power supplies- and I had a small generator- anyway the idea was buy a small air conditioner and cool one room like the bedroom if power went out - of course it never went out for multiple days since we bought the unit. So we never used it in our home. However- Our neighbor had a 20,000 btu unit that cooled their downstairs area installed in the wall that went bad - it was under warranty and for some reason it couldn’t be repaired- and a replacement unit would not fit - so there was a delay in this process. So being a nice neighbor I offered them this unit to put in the living room window till things were fixed etc. This unit did an unbelievable job keeping the living room and adjoining kitchen area cool in June/July/August in NJ by the way. They had a small house but that area was much larger than a 5000 btu should handle but it did. - We actually ended up selling our house and moving before our neighbors sorted out their repairs on the old unit - so we never asked me it back. Anyway the bottom line is I am not an air conditioner expert - but I recommend this one !! ... show more

  • Bad Packaging/Product
Style: Mechanical Controls Color: White
I know GE is a good product, but Amazon & USPS shipping is terrible. AC box clearly marked "UP/FRAGILE" so product is not shipped upside-down. Amazon packed that box Inside another box, but the Amazon box was not marked "UP/FRAGILE" so shipping company would know which side is UP. AC machine leak all its oil & freon out. Box was damaged & AC machine was damaged. Exchange it with another & explained packaging issue to Amazon. Amazon said they would advise shipper about marking the Amazon box. I received replacement, same issue with box not being marked "UP or FRAGILE " I let the AC machine set for 24 hours before plugging it in & turning it on. Turned on high cold, AC worked but not very cold. I let it run for 30 minutes, finally got cold. Installed unit, turned it open high cold. Still not blowing cold. Let it run 30 minutes & checked temperature with thermal heat gun. Temperature at vent 69 degrees. Turned on low & compressor turned off. Temperature at 90 degrees, AC compressor never came back on. Turned it off, let it set for 10 minutes, turned it on high cold & AC compressor came on. Blew cold. It ran for 5 minutes & AC compressor turned off. It never came back on. I returned product & spoke with Amazon. Explained my frustration about shipper. Amazon advised me they have no control on how/who will be shipping products. I explained USPS does not care about how the product is handled & the person delivering our Amazon products are elderly females. They have dropped many packages on the ground out of their vehicle to the ground. Suggested how to fix this issue to Local USPS, but frustration has fallen on Deaf Ears. I ordered a different unit & hope someone will package the replacement AC unit correctly. ... show more

  • Great Backup AC to run off Generator Great Backup AC to run off Generator
Style: Mechanical Controls Color: White
This was only bought as a backup AC to run off a generator in the event of power failure on hot days. Selected it for ease of install and low power consumption to run off a Predator 3500 inverter generator. Todays peak temperature is 98° and feels like 116°. The power has been out for about 4 hours since noon. The room with the AC unit is southern facing catching all the rays and has brick exterior with no insulation. The room itself has a thin cheap door, but decent insulated windows. At a setting of 8 on low cool, I'd say it feels about 75 in the room. At this setting with a fridge running at the usual 50% we keep it at, my generator is pushing 750 VA. This is about 25% of the generators capacity and with eco mode on should last around 11 hours off 2.3 gallons. Well through the night. Installing for first time took only 20 minutes because I have a temporary setup for it. I'd imagine this would take less then 10 minutes next time. Appears to not hog energy which is good for emergency situations where a generator is being used. Cools the room effectively at a low setting in a small room with poor insulation on a hot day. All the pictures of the AC setting, fridge specs, and generator pull are included in case you want to do the math. Should help you decide if this is the right choice if you plan on using it for the same purpose. ... show more

  • I've had it since April 2023 and have updated the review a few times I've had it since April 2023 and have updated the review a few times
Style: Mechanical Controls Color: White
It does work fairly well. I would not recommend it for people who are susceptible to respiratory issues. I live in a humid climate which may play a part in the issues I have with this unit. If you leave the drain plug in like the manufacturer recommends for efficiency then the inside will get nasty faster. If you leave the drain plug out it will be easier to tell when the unit gets nasty on the inside because it will usually quit dripping just before it needs cleaned. You will have to pull this thing out of the window, take the case off of it, and clean the inside of it monthly to prevent mold and bacteria from growing in the unit. The drain is elevated above the bottom of the drain pan by about a quarter inch so the drain pan will never completely drain. It is difficult to clean because the way that the fan shroud is designed causes debris to get trapped in a small area that is hard to access without further disassembly. If you have someone in your home who is highly susceptible to mold then you will have to disassemble this thing beyond what the warranty allows in order to sanitize it. Make sure you take pictures at every step of the disassembly so that you can put it back together after you clean it on the inside because instructions for cleaning beyond just the filter are not included in the product manual. If you live in a home with older windows, the bottom of the window opening doesn't come flush with the interior window sill, or you don't want to drive screws through your window sill then you will need to get a stand for the unit. When using a stand you will have to cover the window sill with a board big enough to raise the unit above the bottom of the window opening to prevent window damage and use boards to fill the gaps under the outer shrouds so that you have a surface to attach the unit and the shrouds to. For that setup you will also need foam to close the gaps under and around the stand. At this point I wish I would have kicked out a couple hundred dollars more to get a unit that exhausts out the window instead of having to be mounted in it. The noise is comparable to any other portable unit so if you don't like noise then either pay through the nose to get a larger central unit for your house or get a mini split system so that the noisy part of the unit stays outside. February 2025 update I added a picture to show you some of the crap you'll have to clean out of the unit regularly. The picture was taken after an hour worth of cleaning and I still have more to go before I can reassemble it. The mold has already crept into the styrofoam fan and blower shroud enough that I'm not going to be able to get it all out this time. One of the accordion window shrouds has already torn in one area and will have to tape it together before I use it again. More of the foam adhesive tape they used to assemble the fan and blower shroud has torn apart. This might end up being the last year that I get to use this unit because every time I clean it it gets harder to eliminate the mold and the pink crap even when I use bleach. If you have a family member who is susceptible to mold or respiratory issues I would advise against buying this unit unless you're desperate and plan on cleaning it thoroughly every other month. If that's the case then the level of disassembly you'll have to do to get it clean will be more than enough to void the one year warranty the first time you clean it. I will add another picture the next time I clean it from before I start so you can get an idea of how bad it gets. ... show more
