  • By far the best camera on the market
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
This is by far the best POV camera I have ever gotten. I started using POV for skiing and sailing 10 years ago before the GoPro was even a thing. Recently my GPS enabled camera broke and I was looking around for a better version and was refusing to get a GoPro. When I came across the Garmin Virb I was skeptical at first because it is not exactly their field. Fear not, this self contained camera does everything and more. Having a built in waterproof and shock resistant case makes me feel safe using it in the worst of conditions. The one button on and record is great for knowing exactly when it is recording without the necessity of looking for a red light. The GPS is very accurate and is quick to connect with the satellite connections. The software that comes with the camera matches the great quality of the camera itself. The desktop editing software makes it easy to import telemetry from the camera and other Garmin devices, making for quick editing and posting of your favorite clips. The app is also great for seeing both live footage and recorded footage. Great for showing your friends on a lift ride up the previous run you just did. Battery life is surprisingly good for constantly running a GPS, plus I bought some external batteries that are easy to swap in mid run. It is convenient that Garmin chose to stick with the universal mounting system that GoPro made because when you finally replace your GoPro with the Garmin Virb you can still keep all the same mounts. ... show more

  • Better than GO PRO! More Features! Includes GPS!
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
Great Alternative to GO PRO WITH GPS! Compared to the GoPro Series 3 and below I like this camera much better. I won't comment on the software/firmware. As updates are released regularly. So The software/firmware you get with your camera may not be what is available to me as I write this. Hardware wise I love this camera.... It has GPS! So it can record GPS data. It also will read ANT+ sensors, such as Heart Rate & Temperature. There is also the capability to have a ANT+ OBDII reader so if your 4x4 Off Roading that it will record that info as well and synch it to the video. The Camera will also allow you to use an external wired microphone, (With special cable), or using a Bluetooth microphone. All of these features are something that IS NOT POSSIBLE with a Go Pro camera. Also using the optional special cable, you can maintain waterproof/dust proof capability and POWER/Charge the camera battery, Plug in a wired microphone, AND get composite video out to a monitor & still be water/dust proof. Again something You CAN"T do with a Go Pro camera. Mounting options... this camera IS compatible with ALL Go Pro mounting hardware. So you mounting options have just increased as you can use all Garmin Virb/XE mounts, 3rd party Garmin Virb Mounts, as well as ALL GoPRO mounts and ALL 3rd party GoPRO mounts. One drawback... it is very picky about the microSD cards you get. Make sure you get a high quality one, and preformat on your computer, Then install and let the camera format the MicroSD card. Remote capability can be controlled, by a dedicated Virb Remote, By some GARMIN GPS units that have ANT+ capability also have built in VIRB remote (My Garmin 650T GPS has built in Virb Remote) as well as your smart phone/Tablet. iOS or Android Google store based. IF you have a good quality card, the video is very smooth. The setup options are a lot more configurable then the GoPro as well. Because 1% of all electronics arrive DOA, if you get one DOA, Get it replaced rather than try a different camera. ... show more

  • Very disappointed that the camera does not permit immediate play back ...
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
Very disappointed that the camera does not permit immediate play back to review what I just recorded, but requires that you download the clips to the Virb Edit app to review and edit the clips. The new Go Pro has this feature which is very useful. Otherwise the camera is good and the add on data in Virb Edit is useful. ... show more

  • Great little camera in a compact package
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
UPDATE: 9/6/15: What is it with battery life on any action camera? Taken this thing out a couple more times and keeping it in highest quality mode and last use only allowed me 45 minutes of shooting. Going to have to hook it back up to a backup battery and on the look out for a 3rd party battery for it. Otherwise, video still coming out great, lots of fun action shots and have not had any problem with GPS connectivity or connectivity to iPhone. Keeping it at 5 stars since battery issues seem to be a problem for a lot of cameras and the end product with this thing is still great. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I am very impressed with this camera. I have taken it out a couple of times already and have not had any difficulty getting a GPS lock, exactly what I would expect from one of the leaders in GPS equipment. The video it shot in 1080p at 30fps was sharp and putting the gauges on the video was super easy using the free software. I came from a contour camera to this and the difference is night and day. Didn't require that I format my SD card and just uploaded my video with intuitive editing software. Very nice and a massive change from contour, which hit or miss would even recognize the camera! The only con so far is that the little quick start manual is pretty useless. It takes a little bit of toying around with it to figure out all the tricks this compact thing can perform. Looking to putting it through the tests on the mountain bike and hopefully in the water soon. Unlike the other reviewer, I was able to find all the mounts I needed for this quickly on Amazon and Garmin's website. Will update as I get a bit more experience with it! ... show more

  • Video quality issues
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
I really wanted to like this camera. It had some features that gopro didn't have, like GPS built in and OIS. A big issue was the actual quality of the video. I tried countless settings to try and get it right, but I had zero luck with it. Unfortunately I sent it back since for the price it should have been able to produce good video. As a comparable I also had a under a hundred buck camera that produced much better video. Odd I know, so I don't know if I had a dud or the quality just isn't great with this camera. ... show more

  • Garmin could do better!
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
Video was soft. GPS was not correct. Battery life was about 1 hour or less if you have everything turned on such as Bluetooth, wi-fi, stabilization. You might can add 15 to 30 minutes with all of that turned off. Form factor is pretty good. It seems well built. Can't charge the battery unless it's in the camera. Most cameras have this issue but when you have a battery that has a short run time and you can take it out of the camera and replace it with another battery, it just makes since to provide a small external charger. How many batteries would you need to video a 5 or 6 hour motorcycle ride? No indicators that the battery is charged or it's even charging. The LCD panel had some battery indicators but it's hard to see and the LCD turns off in certain charging modes. Just do some research and you will see what I'm talking about. This camera is very new so you will see more reviews that I believe will confirm my thoughts. Just not worth $400. ... show more

  • Good but could be a lot better
Style: With Image Stabilization (1080p / 60fps)
Camera worked well. Pros: Easy to set up. Paired quickly with most Garmin devices. Virb edit software is a free app and easy to use. I was quickly able to add overlays of speed, HR, etc as well as a map of where I was at the time of the video. Cons: This camera does NOT pair with Edge 820. You will have to manually turn camera on and off. Camera comes with a helmet mount that is more specific for motorcycle helmet and does not fit well on a vented bicycle helmet. This forced me to attach it "upside down" on my handlebars. As such, you can not see the battery life and settings while you are riding. Had I known all this, I would have saved $150 and purchased the prior version of the virb. Virb edit is not a robust video editing program. I added my overlays using it but then moved the raw video to iMovie to truly edit my video. I did a short ride and made my first video to try it all out. Unfortunately is was a cloudy day but you can get an idea what your buying: [...] ... show more
