  • Great camera to log OBD-2 data Great camera to log OBD-2 data
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I really like this camera overall. Originally I bought a Hero 5 Session from a box store as we were going on vacation (cruise) and I wanted a camera to take some video and to use while snorkeling and time lapse videos. While it worked well but the more I thought about it I was concerned about long term use as it doesn't have a replaceable battery. I took it back and debated between the Hero 5 Black and Virb Ultra 30. I ended up getting the Virb because they support 3rd party products. I ride motorcycles and have a Sena 20S Bluetooth headset which will pair to this and not the GoPros. Also support for OBD-2 dongles. The first thing I tested was OBD-2 in my car. While this camera does have GPS and can calculate speed based on this, it is nice to be able to compare the two. I couldn't find any information on what OBD-2 adapters were compatible with this camera though. Garmin's website and manual really didn't say anything. I happened to own one already that I use with Torque Pro so I thought I would just test it out and it paired right up and logged data. Here is the one I am using: ScanTool 426101 OBDLink MX Bluetooth: Professional OBD-II Scan Tool for Android & Windows I went into Bluetooth selected Add New then pressed the pair button on the OBD2 tool and it immediately connected and I was off driving. When I imported the video into the Virb Edit software I went into G-Matrix and it dropped in several gauges but you can add/remove/relocate them as you want. There were a couple gauges that didn't display data like fuel consumption and torque but those don't display anything in Torque Pro either. Keep in mind not every car will display every field. So I wasn't shocked about this. With my 2015 Subaru WRX, it displayed quite a few of the gauges that I was looking for like Tach, Speed and Engine Load. In the attached photo I used the Virb Edit software to drop a few of the various gauges available and used it to export a still image to show what it looks like. I still need to test it out with the Sena 20S Bluetooth Headset but it is a nice to have feature not really something that I won't use a lot. There is too much snow to take a motorcycle out right now to give it a good test. It is nice to have the option. Overall video quality and ease of use are along the lines of others. I have had no issues. It seems in line to anything I got from the Hero 5 Session. While it is a much larger camera the specs in terms of video are the same as Hero 5 Black. I have a coworker who built an experimental airplane with a Garmin panel. He is going to test my camera out with the Bluetooth in his plane and I will post a review of that once we get results. If there is anything negative to say it is that it is Mini USB. I haven't had a cell phone or tablet that uses this connector for many years so now I have to carry a cable just for this camera. It takes a really long time to charge but the battery is also bigger than the Hero 5 Session. I bought a couple generic batteries for this so I can swap them out. I really liked the USB-C port on the Hero 5 cameras as you can plug them in either way. You don't have to look which way they are keyed. Also my wife's and I have Nexus 6p phones which also use USB-C so if traveling and we want to carry a battery pack we only need one cable. This won't apply to everyone out there but it was a feature I miss. I also liked the remote that GoPro has which has a display to actually get feedback on what the camera is doing. ... show more

  • This is the best action camera for motocross
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
This is the best action camera for motocross. Not only is the picture quality in 4k noticeably better than the gopro 5, it has features that really set it apart from all others. Oh one of the best parts is that it uses the same mounting setup as gopro. This way all of my gopro accessories work with this camera. This is so cool since there are so many 3rd party accessories (mounts) for the gopro that are dirt cheap. This will tell you how fast you are going, your air time, height and distance for every jump, and when hooked up to a heart rate chest strap, your heart rate. All of this information can be placed anywhere you want on the video. There are also many different ways to display each bit of information. It will give you your lap times and show exactly where you went on a gps map of the track/place. I used a gopro 3+ black edition before this and it is a big upgrade. I also watched every review of the gopro 5 and this along with side by side comparisons and this camera consistently looked better or the same in every test of 4k video (mostly downgraded to 1440p or 1080p for you tube). The difference was apparent even on youtube which is not known for it great video quality. By the way all of these cameras look much better on your computer screen than they do when uploaded to youtube. I only wish it had optical stabilization (it has electronic). There is a relatively large switch on top that allows you to record. This is so much better than the button that you press on a gopro. I never was quite sure that the gopro was recording and I did miss a few sessions because I thought it was recording but wasn't . This will never happen with the Virb Ultra 30 because of the manual switch. The screen on the back (like the gopro 5) is much more useful than I imagined it would be. My 2 year old daughter uses it as her personal camera to take pictures of everything. The camera button is in the same place as any other camera so it's good for her to learn photography and it will apply to other cameras later in life. It's the perfect size for her and since its tough, I don't worry about her ruining it (she is a fairly careful child that doesn't break anything though). I'm very pleased with this camera. It's almost too good to be true with the amount of meaningful information that it acquires in real time. It's so cool to see what different parts of the track or mistakes do to your heart rate while riding. The gopro 5 doesn't have any meaningful information other than the video you are recording. This is just so much better for my needs. Oh and the sound is much better than the gopro 3+ black edition that I used before. ... show more

  • Can't go wrong with this one - perfect for motor junkies
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I'm not a person who writes lot of reviews but I would like to ad one for this camera. My main purpose with this purchase was a get a one camera who could do it all. That is to be the best action camera I could get for the money. I do two kind of sports, dirt bike riding and hunting. For motocross rider you can't go wrong with this camera. It is just plain simple brilliant. The G-metrix and all the GPS info you get and can use as an overlay can be very valuable as a rider when you want to improve or just see how good/bad you are. This is the main reason why I chose this one and not GoPro Hero 5 because these information are valuable data. As I hunter mainly hunting with guns I've tested in rather bad conditions, strong wind, low light and rain. It did better then I expected and has already give me an opportunity to relive my hunting experience with my hunting partner which was very cool. The video quality is decent for camera of this size and they sound is quite good. The inbuilt stability works but is not as good as in Sony Acton Cam which I also own and use. The battery life is better then I expected as I had read many reviews that there was a complain about that. In my case I used it in cold conditions in Iceland for more then 2 hours and it had still some juice in the tanks when I got back to the car. But for your info, then I did turn off all the GPS features when hunting as I do not need the same data as I want when I ride dirt bikes. The Garmin system as a user is simple to use but I thought that the touchscreen would be more responsive when in the waterproof case. It works, but sometimes you have to be patient :) The one thing I can really complain is the ECO system and that is why I can't rate it 5 stars. I just wish that you could buy more accessories and especially gimbals for this camera. I hope that third party producers will make usable gimbals for this product as I really need one which I can use on my shoulder. I also love the possibility to be able to go "live" via YouTube and I attend to use that feature in the future. In general this is a good solid product and probably the best action camera a motor junkie can buy. ... show more

  • BEST AUTO RACING CAMERA! BEST ACTION CAMERA PERIOD!
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
The perfect camera for autosports! So, I bought this camera for solo racing (autocross) and it does not disappoint. The stabilization at full HD 60FPS is beautiful and the gmatrix data is very useful. I had to buy a couple accessories to make this really work for auto racing. - Garmin wrist remote (very nice when the camera is on the roof of the car. Can use smartphone as well) - Virb Ultra cage case (non-waterproof. Its good for charging the camera while using it with the mounts. Using all the senors KILLS battery) - OBDII ELM 327 Bluetooth reader (This connects to the Virb and records my car's data like throttle position, temp etc... VERY COOL FOR RACING VIDEOS! I use the KONNWEI adapter. Many adapters fail to pair so good luck with something else.) Needs to add boost gauge to the gauges. - Garmin Genuine extra battery (because you cant have too many) - Lexar 1000x 64gb micro sd U3 class ( You HAVE to get the best card if you want seamless 4k video) So far the best experience about this camera is the free software, Virb Edit. The data overlays can be changed and adjusted. But this camera puts any GoPro TO SHAME! The amount of features, connectivity, senor capability, and even video quality (3 axis stability at full HD 60fps) I can use this camera for epic drone videos and use the built in GPS and altimeter to record all kinds of data. The GPS tracking is one of the best! It laid out the autocross track perfectly from the GPS trailing. The bluetooth abilities are endless. From wireless mics to heart trackers, the Virb Ultra can connect to about everything bluetooth (finding a OBDII that pairs was tricky, thought) So, yes, if you want something that looks like a GoPro, mounts like a GoPro, videos like a GoPro; but is wayyyy better? GET. THIS. CAMERA! ... show more

  • Garmin VIRB Ultra 30
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
Hands-down the best action camera available today. Long time GoPro user, was using a Hero4 Black and have also owned both prior Garmin VIRB models. This camera has all of the bells-and-whistles, like 4K/30, GPS, advanced photo/video settings and stabilization modes. Recording or photo taking can be initiated through physical buttons (like your traditional camera), on the LCD display or through the mobile app or remotes found on other Garmin products like Edge or Vivosmart. The touch-screen works really well, even through the hard case, which is really convenient. This is a very powerful and capable camera. Video and photo quality is on par with the Hero4 Black. But what really sets this camera apart is its ease of use. Simple and intuitive, even for the advanced settings. Simplicity is what I want in an action camera, so that I don't miss a shot and I can just focus on the activity. The Garmin VIRB Edit and Mobile apps have come a long way, and are now very good control and editing tools. From my personal experience with both Garmin and GoPro customer service, Garmin wins by wide margin. Garmin support is so much more knowledgeable and customer friendly than GoPro. You'd think it would be the other way around, but that is not what I've experienced. I am so glad that I now have a replacement for GoPro with an action camera that is more capable and easier to use. ... show more

  • Pretty good camera, awful software.
I've been using my Virb Ultra 30 for nearly a year now. The camera itself is pretty good. It's almost apples to apples with it's major competitor, but the simple mechanical switch to turn it on and take pictures is freakin' fantastic! It's a little slow to actually start recording when you flip the switch, but it's very reliable - unlike many of the alternative products which require careful button-pressing to make them work. Battery life is hugely exaggerated. It's much improved if you turn off the GPS, but still not great. That's typical of a product like this, so again; apples to apples. Long battery life means big batteries inside big cameras - but it's a small camera, so there you go. The mini-USB jack is at least reasonably easy to plug charging cords into and it's not terribly fiddly or fragile like those awful micro-USB plugs. My biggest complaint is that there's no way to simultaneously charge while using an external microphone plugged into the USB jack. It'd also be nice if there was a way to charge or record audio with the camera inside the case. This last point seems so painfully obvious that I can only imagine this is a feature they're saving for a future model. Finally, this is my big beef with Garmin: The VirbEdit software. It's junk. I'd avoid using it entirely, except it's necessary for integrating all the nifty G-Metrix data into the video. First, even with the dozens and dozens of gauges available, there's no way to create a half-decent six-pack. Seriously? There's an aviation bundle, but no six-pack? Dumb, dumb, dumb. Secondly, the G-meter often doesn't orient itself correctly. One would think this would be tied to the video orientation, but it's not. Further, using the "flip 180" option often does nothing - though this changes between software updates. And about those software updates: None of them have fixed any problems I've had with the software and the "update" feature has never worked for me; I've always had to reinstall with the new version. The software interface is sluggish and it's difficult to tell what's a button and what's a label. Sure, it's fancy-looking, but it's a bear to use. My typical editing process is to export all my video with the G-Metrix data overlay, then use something else to do the actual editing - and nothing about my editing requires anything fancy. All in all, I generally like the camera. It could be better, but it has one less weakness than the alternatives (the record switch) and it was a pretty big weakness I'm glad to be rid of. If you plan to use the G-Metrix data, prepare for a headache. If you're hoping to use their editing software, give up all hope; Even at free, it's hugely overpriced. ... show more

  • Action camera with metric data built in Action camera with metric data built in
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I am a actual person who purchased the product. I know it is a surprise among the sea of thinly veiled reviewers that have to have the disclaimer: "I received the product for a fair and quality review...meaning it is bribed review." Sigh...I hate those I actually bought the Virb ultra with my hard earned cash working. I am taking flying lessons. I purchased it so I could record my lessons and thought about getting dual use as a light camera and go any where action camera for fun. I am not extreme so have not tested this while jumping off a mountain into snow or swimming with sharks. I am a garmin fan but their products tend be released at almost beta stage software then mature into a excellent product. Which is not so here. I think they are quickly updating and fixing any issues (I had no issues myself). The metric data aspect really attracted me. Good: The metrics match pretty well. Although the altitude does not match the planes altitude after taking off and flying for a bit but it is close at times (off by 100 - 300 feet at times). *Update: Contacted garmin support. The elevation variation is actually within tolerance. According to Garmin support the elevation variation is plus + or - 400 feet. SO now that I know that the virb ultra 30 i actually a lot closer to the right altitude. Just a small thing to keep mind but its actually a very minor issues as the accuracy in my experience has been between 40-300 ft. So all in all its pretty close. The speed matches well and the tracking function is really helpful. I will try to dig into why the altitude doesn't match closer after take off (maybe the refresh rate on the altimeter? it is hilly area also) The image quality turned out really well. I don't know how the new gopro could markedly beat it. Metrics on board is nice and the Garmin edit software is great and easy to use. Camera controls are easy, well thought out and simple. Blinking lights on camera make it easy to tell if it is recording or on standby. Quick software updates Sound quality...excellent. Size is small and button layout is very straight forward is easy. Touch screen is great! No weird funky missed touches and is responsive, simple and layout well. (good job garmin!) Bad: Not many accessories yet...I am sure they are coming and they are responsive to suggestions so it is shaping up to be a good product all around. It is pricey though, especially compared to my Yi 4K I had but you are getting a ton of capabilities that no other camera on the market can provide. Going to need extra batteries or way to connect to battery pack for long recording or especially 4k. I was able to get about 1 hour 20 minutes on a full battery at 1080p 30 fps ( maybe if I turned off wifi and few others I can increase that). overall good considering all this little thing is doing. Final thoughts: Even with the gopro new release coming up I am happy with the Ultra 30 and will be keeping it because the metric data capabilities are amazing. I hope Garmin continues to invest in the Ultra 30 software development and accessories. I think they have a real winner here. In the photo you can see I have the Garmin cage with protective lens (only available through Garmin as of this moment). It is a great accessory if you do not need the hard plastic protective casing during filming. It is easy to get the camera in and out and quickly mounted. I also have the virb remote which is easy to use and simple. I highly recommend it if you would like a hands free operation without using voice commands (which work really well) Disclaimer: I bought the product and liked it. Garmin didn't give me anything! I will try to update the review as I continue to use it and learn.I wish there was battery pack I could plug into it to keep it running longer. maybe one that would allow me to use inline audio recording from the headsets at same time. Update: I attached 3 photos I took to show the basic picture quality. Price just dropped to match the GoPro 399 price I presume. Shame I purchased it few days too soon at 499. It is a great price at 399. Still having issues with altimeter though. FYI Amazon doesn't protect against price drops. So I lost 100 bucks. Boo Amazon your customer service used to be good. Action camera 5 stars Amazon 2.5 stars (customer service isn't what it used to be at amazon) Good competitive move Garmin to match GoPro price. Update 11-4-16: I am still using the virb ultra 30 weekly. I really have grown to love this thing. It easy to use. I have no run into any overheating issues or write errors. It performs every time. I hope Garmin continue to develop and improve the android app as well as desktop software editing software. I would purchase again. Update 12-1-16 (elevation issue resolved, you can enter a reference elevation in virb editing software): It is still performing great. I am not sure if garmin updated the virb edit software or I was not aware before but you now can enter post recording reference elevation. So if you reference elevation while on the ground at 0 or so the elevation in the video will be correct in relation to the set point. Still recommend. I do wish garmin had put USB C connection on the virb ultra 30 but it still love my virb ultra 30. ... show more

  • Second Defective Device
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I'm disappointed to have to write this review, but many of these devices have defective smart switch/levers (that turn the camera on/off with one flick). My first one worked for a month before the switch failed. After getting a replacement under warranty, the second one also failed (after a month or so of rare use). At the time of purchase, the specs of this camera were better than GoPro. The photos and footage from the camera are great, but I missed many videos believing my camera to be on (due to the malfunctioning switch). Was really interested in the potential for weatherproof charging as with the previous model (Virb XE) and many theorized it was in the works (still as yet unused pins/contacts on the camera). But, I guess development stopped (likely due to these defects). Edit. Now, at the end of 2018, Garmin has released a powered mounting system for this outdated camera at a price point of $129. Too little, too late. The system gives you the option of adding external power through what looks to be a proprietary cable/connection. And the mount supplies power only. No option for external mic acces. Come on, people! Action cameras at this point need to be able to provide external, waterpoof power and mic access (on one connection). The mounting system is top notch though. ... show more
