  • Nav Device Versus Smart Phone Navigation, Go With Nav Device...for now.
Color: Black
The Situation: We had a 14 hour trip coming up where I would be towing a camper into northern Michigan for a week of camping. My initial thought was to use my smart phone navigation versus purchasing a Nav Device. I just had a hard time justifying the cost of a GPS device when my phone seems to work fine in urban settings when trying to find a particular place. The Testing: So I started testing my phone more diligently using the native Google navigation and another navigation app. Again both were fine and both used Google maps, they just had a different interface. The biggest problem I had was in the lack of real time information such as speed and lane assist. I found that the lack of speed information (both my speed and the posted speed) a little annoying. It's not a huge deal, but it's a nice feature when you're in a new area and busy monitoring traffic around you and you're looking for street names or freeway/interstate exits. Both phone apps would get me to my location, but they both did it in the most simplistic manner. The Choice: After determining that I wasn't really comfortable using the basic guidance of the smart phone (neither the native app or the 3rd party one) I started looking at my choices in Nav. Devices. Holy crap talk about product over load!!! It took all of about 2 minutes to whittle the choices down to a device that had life time maps...that's huge in my opinion. Garmin appears to have a higher average reviewer rating. I've used both Garmin and Tom Tom in the past, but that was a few years ago and honestly both seemed the same to me. After about an hour of reading reviews and checking prices I settled on the Garmin nuvi 40LM with the 4.3" screen. I went with this particular model because: 1. High user rating. 2. It had lifetime maps. 3. The price was under $80!!! 4. The screen size seemed to be about right. The results after the trip: I love this thing!!!! The only complaint is regrading the lack of a user manual in the box. They want you to download it, which is fine, except when you're in the middle of the trip sitting at a gas station trying to figure out a particular feature. A printed user manual would be handy. However, after working my way through the learning curve of features, I really do love this thing. The screen size is perfect for my vehicle and my needs. The split screen for lane assist is clear and very useful, it's really almost essential if towing something through a large city freeway system. It allows you the peace of mind and time needed to put your vehicle in the correct lane a mile or two prior to your exit. I love the layout of the secondary information such as upcoming turn, miles to next turn, posted speed and actual speed. In a new city you're so busy making sure your in the right lane and watching for sudden stops that you often miss the posted speed (even though you're going to go with the flow of traffic regardless of the posted speed) so it's nice to have that information displayed. It was off a couple of times throughout the trip, but only for a short period of time. The unit came with the windshield and dash mount. I went with the windshield suction mount and had no problems with it staying in place for the whole week. After having the device on for the whole trip I find myself missing it now that I'm back to the normal work routine. It's not that I need it for the daily drive, but I just like the added information. I don't think I would want the screen any larger than it is. A 4.3" screen is plenty big for my needs. If I had a larger screen I would be concerned about obstructing my view of the road. You can pack a lot of information in an easy to read format on this unit. Conclusion: It would be nice if someday our smartphones can take the place of a dedicated nav device, but in my experience I don't think they're ready yet. Again, they're fine for navigating short trips in urban areas, but not on long trips with spotty cell coverage on unfamiliar roads. I don't know if Garmin is better than Tom Tom, it's probably more of a user preference than an actual difference in features...but without running both types side by side it's hard to say for sure. This Garmin unit worked great for my trip and I'm very happy with it. It would recommend this unit without hesitation. ... show more

  • Solid, easy to use, quick updates, great display, quick recalcuation
Color: Black
I have had a number of different car GPS from all the major makers over the year. This is my second Garmin. I decided to buy a Garmin again because they are basic but really solid GPS. Occasionally some models seem to have some software quirk where they don't navigate well. But given how long this one has been released I was confident this one would. And it does navigate very well. It recalculates extremely quickly AND doesn't blurt out recalculating. It just does it. The display is great. Very easy to see the next turn and when you get close how many say left turn lanes there are. When you are on the Freeway and you get close it splits the screen to give even more information. I suggest downloading the Garmin Express app on your PC. It made updating the software and latest map very easy. A couple of shortcomings. One is that the speed limit data seemed to be outdated way more than my TomTom GPS. Strange as I had a very updated map. Also not as far as I know any voice options beyond just the one. TomTom voices are hilarious. They make using the GPS a bit more fun. But neither of those take away from the 5 star rating. Yes we have smart phones. But a good car GPS makes a vacation so much easier and this is a simple yet effective and worthwhile model to have. Highly recommended. I also recommend a beanbag mount so no one knows that you have a GPS. I have tried 3 and this one is the best, stable as they come. And works great with this model. • Fine GPS For The Price
Color: Black
I've had this Garmin with Lifetime Maps since May 2014 and use it to this day. Lifetime Maps means you can only download up to 4 maps per year, so choose wisely should you download 3 and the year hasn't ended yet. The screen size is adequate for my own needs, but I know others would like a much larger screen to really see things. I feel a larger screen would be too obstructive and distracting, so this is fine. The brightness changes automatically from day to night settings (white backgrounds to black backgrounds). You can manually adjust the brightness as well. It isn't bulky, but it's not slim either. The battery life is still about 2 hours even after having this for months now. I would always keep it plugged into your car though. It comes with a car adapter. There is a USB cable that comes with this, but I have only used it to update via my laptop and not to charge in my car. The suction cup sticks well. I keep mine stuck to the windshield, for convenience, but I store my GPS and cords in the glove box. When it comes to generating a route, it isn't as fast as I would like. Sometimes it can take more than 30sec, especially with settings like avoiding "highways." That can be annoying, but it can also be frustrating if you're lost and already flustered at the wheel. Most of the time, it takes about 10sec to get a route. I just make sure to ready my device ahead of time so I'm not waiting. You also should be near enough to a road/street in order for the GPS to work faster at creating a route. If you're in a parking lot, it may take longer to route and then it will attempt to generate your route once you hit a street. That said, it has never frozen on me. Not once. I've never had it malfunction enough to reset or force a shut down. The map can be changed to show more or less details. You can't really move around the map on your screen like you can with Google Maps. It only zooms in or out the relative area you are in. Street or exit names are easy to read unless the name is rather long. The longer it is, the smaller the text becomes. The top left corner shows you how far the next step is, which is good. What's not good is if the GPS routes a way that makes a ton of turns left/right/left/right in succession and within a few feet of each other. Not great. There is a detour option, but that will only give you so many options. (I've tried to detour more than 4x on a single drive, and it will route about that many times during that occasion). The voice can be changed from the default Samantha voice. I changed my voices a few times, and maybe it's just me, but it seemed like each one gave very different routes for the same destination. (Within the hour, same day). Very few times... the screen splits to show a junction on the freeway. It's helpful, but I wish it were available on all roads. This junction can be viewed when previewing the next steps in a route too. You can save routes, addresses, etc. You can only save one "home" address. While driving on a road with multiple lanes, sometimes there are multiple arrows (the number of which correspond to each lane on the road). It will highlight the one you need to be on. This is extremely useful; however, it's not available on all roads. To work my way around this obstacle, I take a look at the next few steps in the route so I know which side of the road to take. You have to download software called, "Garmin Express" to manage your device. There, you can change the name of your device and your vehicle image (e.g., colored arrows, cars, odd shapes, etc.). You can download language packs as they come up, and download map updates here as well. You can back up your saved places and routes. You have very limited storage. I believe it's a few MB, which can disappear quickly with too many map updates and add-ons. Overall, it's a fine GPS for the price. I would recommend it, if you're not wanting to put in more than $100 for a GPS. It does its job, albeit at a slower pace when generating a route. The "faster route" option is akin to the route you can look up on Google Maps. It has limited storage, and limited downloads for map updates per year. ... show more
