  • Easy set-up and use..
I will update this after some actual field use. The inReach Mini was well packaged with the optional charging items. Set up, activation and initial testing of the unit was extremely easy and straightforward. The device is very small, but feels substantial and very good quality. It looks like it should stand up to typical use, and some abuse quite well. The Garmin Explore website makes it easy to set up your 3 preset messages. The Earthmate App (I use an Android phone) makes syncing the device and using many of the features very easy. The app is intuitive and easy to navigate and use. The Explore website also has other functionality and is also easy to understand and navigate. Please note that for the mini, firmware updates need to be done with Garmin Express. If you don't already have it, it's a free download. I connected the mini and within 2 minutes the update was installed. All other syncing functions like waypoint updates, messages, etc., are done from your mobile device when you connect to the mini via Bluetooth. Even without a mobile device, the mini is completely functional, and scrolling through and selecting the various functions is easily accomplished. You can send messages without a mobile device, though it will be a bit more cumbersome than using your phone. It's nice that you don't absolutely need a functioning phone though, in case there is a situation where your phone is damaged and you need to communicate or send an SOS. I was surprised how quickly the GPS acquired a fix when first turned on, and how quickly messages were sent and received. I realize that depending on location, topography etc., that messages may not always be quite as quick, but my initial impressions are extremely positive. My wife and I spend a lot of time, mostly fishing, in areas with no cell coverage. I will update this review after some use in the field. We camp in some areas that are steep canyons. I am anxious to see how long it takes for messages to send with a limited view of the sky. For those considering one of these it might be helpful to know how the messaging works. To me, it seems best set up to send a preset message once you are off grid. You can have 3 different messages, each with their own (and different if you choose), contact list. You can send an unlimited amount of preset messages each month as they don't count against your allotted messages. The way my wife and I plan to use the device is to send a preset message that basically says we are off grid, and to reply if something important comes up. All your recipients have to do is reply to your message and you will receive it. If you choose, each message can also contain a link to your location. If a recipient clicks on it they will see precisely where you were when you sent the message. Obviously if they reply, the reply and any messages exchanged will count against your monthly allotment. My initial impression is extremely positive and I am happy to have this device. ... show more

  • Inreach mini 2
Style: InReach Mini 2 Color: Orange +Power Pack
Works great ,light weight, had it clipped to my day bay for our summit, didn’t get in the way and was easy to use to send a few messages when I had no cell service.

  • Great for hiking but know what you are buyin
I do not normally write alot of reviews but felt I needed to in this case because this is a potentially life saving product and people need to understand what they are buying. First, I primarily bought the mini for the SOS feature. I hike and kayak alone in many remote locations and wanted the piece of mind. I have not used it yet and hope I never do but I am confident it will work. I did a ton of research and I think many of the negative reviews stem from people not understanding what they bought, how to use it, or where to use it. The mini is an saty receiver and transmitter that relies on the iridium saty network. It’s not a cell phone, it doesn’t work like a cell phone. For any saty transmitter to work it MUST have a clear view of the sky facing toward the satellite. Trees, clouds, and even curvature of the earth (sorry flat earthers) will all affect how your mini works. It pays to take some time before you leave on your trip to understand where in relation to you the saty birds are so you know where to point your inreach. It’s not a cell phone. Taking 20 or 30 min or longer to hit a saty bird and communicate is not unusual that a quite normal. When I was in the military it wasn’t unusual to wait sometimes hours for bird time. Second, if you are having problems with the Bluetooth it’s almost always your phone. When you put todays smartphones in different power save modes one of the first things to get downgraded is Bluetooth. I found my iPhone won’t hold a Bluetooth connection in power save mode or airplane mode but does just fine if I keep out of those two modes. As far as the interface for messaging. Yes it’s old school but I believe that’s how they keep the unit small and lightweight. Personally, I use the presets and I txt from the mini and I ask whoever I am txting to only reply if they really need something. Again it’s not a cell phone. I also found the tracking to be dead on an accurate as long as you have a signal. When I am kayaking I almost never lose signal when I am hiking in the mountains it’s in and out based on tree and clouds. In closing I think you will be very happy with mini provided you know what you buying, what it’s expectations are and how to use it properly. If you are looking for cell phone like service you will be disappointed. If you understand or adjust to saty service I think you will find this little tool gets the job done remarkably well! If you have questions ask me ... show more

  • The device is easy to use but the plans take time to understand.
Style: InReach Mini 2 Color: Orange +Power Pack
I'm happy with the inReach Mini, it just took a while to understand the best way to use it. I didn't need the custom texting in the field. I would text as normal within cel service area from my phone. Then use the inreach to start tracking and use the canned messages while away from cel service. Once your people know to not reply to a Garmin text, it worked fine. ... show more

  • The Wearable "power" pack is so cheap. Don't order this bundle with the battery
Style: InReach Mini 2 Color: Orange +Power Pack
The GPS unit is fine but the "power" pack battery doesn't work, asked the vendor for a replacement and they had good customer service, but the 2nd power pack didn't work either. Just use your own battery pack...

  • Peace of mind offshore
Style: InReach Mini 2 Color: Orange +Power Pack
This device, though a little pricy, is worth every penny. Im able to check weather, send and receive texts, and if necessary, use it for navigating. Plus, SOS button in case of emergency. It will send out my position and call appropriate rescue. Battery lasts for days. Use my cell phone, along with the app to send the messages. If the cell battery goes down it can be used as a stand alone device. Device only was about three ounces and is small. It can easily fit in a pocket. Mainly use it when I go offshore fishing and lose cell service. ... show more
