  • sturdy for field use!
Worked well but too many options to scroll through. Elevation was not always accurate . Used for 6 weeks and batteries worked well.

  • Another good GPS 64xxx
This is a replacement/backup for my 64st. It performs very well, and like the other handhelds in this series, is easy to use.

  • Topos are NOT preloaded!
TOPOS NOT PRELOADED! You must first go to the Garmin website and download their Garmin Express software. Once Express is on your PC, and you try to download the "free and supposedly preloaded" topo's, Garmin tells you there is insufficient memory on your Garmin unit without installing a micro SD card. There are no instructions in the (terrible) Owners Manual on how to insert the micro SD, so be careful, it's tricky. The topo download takes 4 to 5 hours. Once loaded, what you see on the screen are contours at 100-foot intervals. Let me repeat that: ONE-HUNDRED-FOOT CONTOUR INTERVALS! Useless information. BUT IN EVERY GARMIN PICTURE OF THIS AND OTHER UNITS, THE SCREEN ON THE UNIT NEARLY ALWAYS SHOWS AN ACTUAL BEAUTIFUL USGS QUAD MAP. THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING FOLKS! To get the high quality, for-real, USGS Quad raster's (pictures) of actual topo quadrangles, you have to buy them regionally from Garmin (Southwest US, Southwest US, etc.) at a cost of $100 apiece. To cover the entire US requires 7 files/packages and $800+ and I'm sure there is insufficient onboard memory for all of them! Like most other commenters, I find the Garmin lithium battery pack another gimmick. Their batteries suck, and you have to "trick" the unit into using non-Garmin individual lithium batteries, which are higher quality and hold a higher charge longer (2300 or 2500 mAh instead of Garmin's puny 2000). I just use AA alkaline and keep a pocketful when in the field. I'm keeping it, but very, very disappointed. Not worth $400 for sure. Shame on Garmin's false advertising. Good luck to anyone who recently purchased a Garmin 64 model. ... show more

  • Great Hiking GPS - BaseCamp Not So Much
I have been using Garmin hiking GPS units since 1996. I loved my Garmin 60Csx GPS. It was easy to use. File management was a dream with MapSource. However, after 12 years of service it was time to purchase a new GPS. I chose the 64Csx because I wanted a state-of-the art unit with some extra features such as a camera and flashlight/strobe light. I had considerable trouble activating the unit and downloading maps from the Garmin website. I was on the phone for 2 hours with Tech Support to finally get the unit activated and the United States and Canada maps downloaded. I was very satisfied with the help that the technician provided. Overall I am satisfied with the unit. It has a lot of memory to hold all the topo maps. I think it will hold 5000 waypoints (compared to 1000 for my old unit). I don't think there is a track limit (compared to only 20 for my old unit. It is very accurate and easy to use. However, file management is not as easy as my old unit. The unit has the usual trip odometer, map, compass and elevation pages. I would give the GPSMap 64Csx a 5 star rating. However it must be paired with Garmin BaseCamp software. I wanted to download maps from the GPS to BaseCamp. This is not possible and the GPS has to be attached to the computer as an external drive to use the maps. File management on BaseCamp is non-intuitive at best. Unlike MapSource, which was a dream to use, I'd give BaseCamp very low marks. I could write a tome about this software. But I'm rating the 64Csx, not BaseCamp. Just beware that they are paired and you can't avoid BaseCamp. Garmin: Please update and modernize MapSource and ditch BaseCamp. ... show more

  • Garmin Mapcsx handheld - Horrible battery life!
Battery life is terrible ... only a couple of hours use on a full charge using the “included” rechargeable batteries! Not to mention the batteries drain down very quick when not in use ... dead in about 6 or 7 days. Do not recommend as the battery life is terrible. Fix this and they could be rated much higher! ... show more
