  • Absolutely perfect for what I need
Style: Strap included
I ride horses. A lot. I also manage a competitive trail ride in the deep south (NATRC, if you love trail riding and want to do something fun with your horse, look it up). In order to have a TRAIL ride, you need to map the trail. My go-to is this Garmin. I had a 401 Fortrex, which I love and still have (these things DON'T die!), and decided to upgrade. This is easy to use, does EVERYTHING I need and works seamlessly with ExpertGPS. Even on just a training ride, this is great to use, map your trail, determine mileage and time and if you need to backtrack, just use the backtrack feature. I haven't used everything on this marvelous little gadget, but I do not get on my horse without it. It is just as much a part of my equipment and my helmet and knife. ... show more

  • Focused and capable device
Style: Strap included
This is a very basic device, but it really has everything you need. The MIP screen on the Foretrex 801 is very crisp and readable. The UI is intuitive. Using AAA batteries makes it easy to keep backup power around (but you won't need it because it sips power). Having it on my wrist is very handy when hiking in open country and trying to keep to a bearing. It works with great the Garmin Basecamp desktop app and I haven't had to link it to my Garmin Cloud account to update the firmware. The reason I got it was it just seemed easier to have a wrist mounted GPS when doing navigation where there are no trails. I'm also trying to get better at reading 24k topo maps, so I use the Foretrex in combination with custom printed maps created on Caltopo and a MapTools UTM grid tool. Basecamp, the Foretrex, and Caltopo all work with standard GPX files which makes syncing between them a breeze. So far, so good. ... show more

  • Great GPS
Style: Strap included
This is not my first garmin but it is my first GPS of this caliber. The screen is extremely crisp and looks great. It’s an extremely durable device but I’m still planning on getting a screen protector on it just in case. It’s extremely user friendly and can use it anywhere. Great purchase.

  • Great for off grid, no phones!
Style: Strap included
This product works perfect if you’re looking to go off the map and have no connection with modern technology. It worked perfectly helping find grids with no phone needed, and it takes a charge and has battery’s, lasts for weeks non stop.

  • Pricy- but accurate!
Style: Strap included
I rarely leave to the outdoors without this anymore. The GPS is incredibly accurate, and I have no problem finding very niche locations I mark for later- within feet! I do wish that the main map provided better references for scale, because it's not incredibly obvious how far you are from a waypoint unless you focus on it and retrieve the precise number- general ranging would be fantastic. It's a recurring theme, so i've heard. Garmin is known for fantastic hardware and subpar software- I suspect this is no exception. I can't lie, the menus are quite jarring at times. The five buttons serve multiple purpose, and there's many features you may nnnnnnnnneeeever you use your entire lifetime. Jumpmaster... Yeah, we don't talk about that one. Otherwise, a fantastic tool to mark down points of interest and keep track of them. It's also nice for getting exact data on your travels. Very cool gadget, and a solid four out of five. ... show more

  • Run run
Style: Strap included
Lost my other one I brought almost 8 years ago so was in need of an upgrade anyway. This is much lighter and the display is much better. Haven't used it for work yet but the route tracker looks way more accurate.

  • Not great in middle of no where.
Style: Strap included
Took this on 19 day off trail expedition in Southern Montana this summer. Before I left I loaded a couple walking routes around town to test this thing. It seriously freaks out when you miss a waypoint but continue on to next point. Almost have to be to the end of route before it realizes it and calms down. It will otherwise try to redirect you to the point you missed. Now out in field I lost GPS with all three of its options. I use Google earth when I make these off trail routes from space and download that info to the garmin. As I said earlier if you don't stick to route exactly it will freak out and try to backtrack you to what was missed. After a week of this issue I gave up on it and went back to my tried and true. I might not have been playing to its strength. Seems like if you are walking to a single way point its OK but routes of waypoints is not its strength! I gave it to a friend that sticks to the trails. ... show more
