    • Fantastic little GPS unit!
This is a great little handheld GPS. I found the unit to be perfect for holding in my palm, light weight, and easy to learn the operation. Once I had it linked to my wifi, and my phone via the Garmin Explore app and Bluetooth, it took a few minutes to update, but has performed flawlessly. The included TopoActive maps are pretty good, and even better when used with Open Maps +. Hiking trails are accurate, and overlanding/offroad trails have been accurate. And, although not yet tested, I feel the marine maps will be well represented as well. I had no trouble setting up Geocaching, and it has proven to be very good for that, too. I like that it can access nearest caches while linked to my phone, making it much easier than having to run and download pocket queries. Current weather access is great to have with a tap of the screen. It charges quickly, and has great battery life. Also, it's easy to read in the sunlight. The only con I have, is the use of the Spine 2 mount. There aren't many accessories for it, as opposed to their original spine mount. It IS a bit pricey, but not so much when compared to the Montana series, it falls right in line. I would consider this being more like the Montana series little brother, than being related to the Etrex series. ... show more

    • Terribly Disappointed This is no Oregon Series Replacement
My Background is I have been a huge Garmin fan for many years. The Oregon series has always been my favorite choice for hiking. My Oregon 650T works but has a cracked screen, so I knew I was on borrowed time. The touch 3-inch screen has been a requirement for any replacement. Also, the Oregon unit has nicely rounded edges and a great attachment system. The eTrex Touch arrives and first impression is the case is not even close to the Oregon cases, no ergonomic feel at all. Turning on the eTrex Touch, I noted the map screen is not in color as in the descriptive photos. Now Garmin wants to sell you maps not included. Maybe these would be in color? Then the unit wants to interact with your cell phone, not a large screen PC or iMac. Garmin has some online methods to track your routes. Garmin had bought Delorme and their Topo USA which was great software and then let Topo USA die. I hike where there is no cell signal, don’t try to make me use functions that require a cell signal. Next, the 3-inch screen has changed to a higher resolution. Now there is more crap squeezed onto the screen, and you will need 3X glasses to read items. The keyboard has key spacing of less than 3/16 of an inch. My digits are at least 3/8 of an inch wide. Absolute PIA to input router passwords, etc. I could go on, but needless to say, I returned the eTrex Touch. Garmin has lost its good marketing folks and engineers. Just because you can do something new doesn’t make it a good idea. (As an aside, a friend of mine had an Oregon 450T new in the box, he gifted me, so I am set for a while.) ... show more

    • Decent Mapping GPS for Kayaking and Hiking
I purchased the Garmin eTrex Touch for kayak/surfski fitness tracking, long-distance paddling, hiking, and a backup car navigation device. I debated between the Touch and Solar but decided having maps was worth the premium. Be aware that driving direction maps are not included on the device, but I was able to load an OSM img file into the /Garmin folder for navigation. Otherwise, you will need to pay for additional maps via Garmin Outdoor Maps+. I have two Garmin fish finders with maps subscriptions, and I refuse to pay another Garmin subscription for this device. With an upcoming overnight paddle race, I tested that the eTrex can stay on overnight with the display on low brightness with plenty of battery capacity left (50%+). The eTrex is also able to connect to my Garmin Vivoactive 4s watch for shorter kayak race heart rate monitoring, and the display can be locked while paddling to prevent water from messing with the touch screen. Overall, the device suits my purposes. Knocking off one star due to high price, "premium" map subscription model, and lack of driving navigation out-of-the-box.
