  • Simple, cost effective device for some uses
This GPS receiver is pretty obviously aimed at a subset of the usual customer community, so you'll want to make sure you know what it can / can't do before jumping at its great price. You do not get a color screen, or fancy graphics that you'd get with a $300+ unit, or even on your smart phone. What you do get is a pocketable GPS with super-long battery life (far better than any phone's), support for all existing navigation networks (GPS and Galileo and Glonass -- at the cost of reduced battery lifetime), and some broadly-useful core functions. It's great for old-school (pre-smartphone) geocaching, or orienteering, or hiking. My only real complaints so far (having just received the unit) are with the user interface / documentation. The menu system is classic Garmin, a bit "clunky." Digging through the manual isn't much better, since the unit and its manual both use... unique... terms for some things, and they're not explicitly defined anywhere. I bought the unit primarily for geotagging photos -- I need it to record a log of my path that I can later save to a GPX file. As far as my interface to the eTrex SE, this means I most often want to turn on / turn off logging and then save the data -- but doing this takes a relatively deep dive in the menus. Deeper than I'd like it to be, at any rate. I'll update this review after I put some miles on this gadget (and so can speak semi-intelligently to its actual battery life and accuracy), in the meantime, here are some terms to know as you start using the device or perusing its manual: Activity -- a recorded GPS track. You can have the device start recording automatically based on your motion, or do it manually (with some effort). You'll need to dive into the menus to end the activity / save a file in either case, so you might as well get used to this path. Course -- a pre-defined path you would subsequently like to follow. A course is defined by a series of "Locations," also called "Course Points" by the device / manual (most folks would probably call them "waypoints"). Expedition Mode -- a low-power mode to extend battery life. Bluetooth is turned off, your track is recorded less often. ... show more

  • Great product, But Update Firmware
Nice GPS unit. Enough like the old E-trex that I am comfortable with it. I have a Garmin Instinct and this is the perfect companion for longer multi day hunts/hikes. Synchronizes well with the Garmin Explore App and my watch waypoints and tracks. I had to use a USB cable and Garmin Connect on my desktop computer before I could get the Bluetooth to link up to my phone. Not a big issue - but it may be a problem for some people. Still a 5 star product. Thanks Garmin. ... show more

  • Yes, you can read it in bright sunlight.
Finally, a GPS that is truly sunlight readable. Basic functionality that most people need. Very complicated and non-intuitive, even non-standard interface. However, sunlight readability everything for me.

  • Not the best UI
But battery lasts forever!

  • This didn't work out for me.
For about a week of gentle use (carrying it to and from my office), it seemed to work properly. It feels well built, and was exactly what I was looking for. I planned to use it primarily for geocaching, kayaking, and hiking. The integration with Geocaching software was especially nice, allowing me to search for nearby caches directly from the device itself. After the first week I left on vacation, and decided to stop in Providence RI to find a number of geocaches in the area I was driving through. During the walk, the eTrex started resetting itself. The screen would go black, then I would see the Garmin logo, and it would turn back on. Once this started, it kept occurring every several minutes, and the unit seemed to have difficulty reconnecting to my phone Bluetooth. I had to reset the phone and the unit to get them to connect after this. After ten or so resets I did some troubleshooting. The batteries seemed to be making good contact, the battery door was closed, etc. I did look online and found one post where folks mentioned similar problems, but I didn't find any solutions. Having this kind of problem really soured me to the unit. I decided to return the eTrex unit, and I have replaced it with a Foretrex 801, also by Garmin. The Foretrex was a bit more expensive, but it seems a bit more robustly built, is a bit smaller, and has multi-band GPS. It does not have a native connection to the Geocaching service, but programming in the cache I'm looking for manually as a waypoint doesn't bother me (and gets me more familiar with Longitude and Latitude navigation). I've used the Foretrex for a week now with no problems. ... show more

  • Compact and convenient geocaching GPS handheld unit
Overall, the device has been working out well for my family while geocaching. I also have the newest 67map model and attached photos for perspective. These two units have their pros and cons. I like how simple and easy the etrex se is to use once you get the menu and settings figured out. It’s been solid/reliable… the 67 has been a little glitchy. The etrex se has a very clear and readable monochrome display compared to the color MIP screen on the 67. I highly recommend the etrex SE wanting a basic and affordable GPS unit. Oh, forgot to mention, the antenna on this unit is just as good if not better than the 67. I like that the batteries are replaceable unlike the sealed one on the 67. ... show more

  • Garmin eTrex® SE after first couple days
after first trip: + simple and easy to use + very good screen visibility in sun + very fast location finding (gps) + working on regular battery AA - size, not bad at all but it could be little bit lighter and smaller, "fat" in pocket Overall i am very happy to us it and i don't think there is a better product like that. ... show more
