  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Great GPS golf watch, with cool features....If you don't mind pressing side buttons vice touch screen.
Been playing with the S20 for 5 rounds now. I was using the S4 previously and also use a laser range finder to get precise distances for shot within 150 yards. Overall the watch is very good. There is a learning curve if you have been using a watch with a touch screen which this does not have. PROS: Distances seem to be very accurate as I compare it to the laser quite often. Connects to GPS very quickly and has every course I play in SoCal. Distance to and to clear hazards, which the S4 does not have was a big plus in this model. Graphics are clear and easy to see in sunny conditions (not so great if you are using polarized sun glasses). Band is comfortable and fits my small wrists nicely. Band keeper is very secure, sometimes a little difficult to get the band into the keeper, but once it's in there, it's not coming out, if you're coming from using another Garmin watch, you're used to it. Battery life is VERY good from previous models. One of the main reasons I switched from the S4 is I could never get 2 rounds in, the battery just would not last that long. I have not played back to back rounds with the S20 yet, but after one 4.5 hour round I still have on average 75% left on the battery, which tells me it would easily get in two rounds in one day and still have enough juice to play another round without having to charge it. I have not used any the the "Activity tracking" so I can't comment on that, but normally Garmin is very good with those things. NOT EXACTLY CONS BUT SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: The button pressing can get cumbersome, especially if you are keeping score, tracking shots, or trying to get particular info. The screen always shows yardage to F/M/B, hole # and Par. In order to get, let's say hazards, you have to push the "OK" button to bring up the menu, press the up or down button to get to "HAZARDS," press OK button and it'll show you distances to hazards, if there is more than 1, you have to press the up or down button to look at each as it will only show 1 hazard at a time, then to get back to main screen you have to push the "BACK" button. Buttons are easy to get to, even with a golf glove on (I'm left handed so I'm pressing the buttons with my glove hand). Club tracking is a cool feature. When it's enabled, the watch knows you've just hit a shot and will ask you which club you just hit, so it can track it, it's also pretty good at figuring out which club you just hit and makes it the first choice, for example you hit a drive, the watch asks "driver?" you press OK to confirm, you're next shot you have a 9-iron into the green after your shot, the first choice is usually 9-iron (or something very close), you get the idea. It does take some getting used to to pressing buttons after EVERY shot, if you don't press anything and hit your next shot, no big deal, it'll still track your shot distance, but when you download info to Garmin connect it'll just show a ? as to which club you hit. I still haven't figured out how or even if it's possible to change the club selection list. For instance there is no choice for a Gap Wedge, so if you just hit a GW to the green you have to select either PW or SW. Also, for some reason the watch will not (or does not) update via Garmin express for me like the S4, it tells me the memory is full and there is no mention of it in the manual. Basically it says "the courses you play most often are updated automatically via the Garmin connect mobile app which by the way you must have in order to connect to bluetooth to get message notifications from your phone to the watch; it does not connect to bluetooth the traditional way, you must go through the app. SUMMARY: Good watch, some cool features if you don't mind pressing buttons all the time, at first it's frustrating because you will NOT remember to press the buttons after every shot, just part of the learning curve. Once you get the hang of it, it'll become part of your routine and the shot tracking feature on Garmin Connect is pretty cool to see how far you hit each shot, the direction it went, etc. UPDATE: Called Garmin Customer service and they ran me through some steps in order to get course updates via Garmin Express on the watch. You have to delete some files such as courses in parts of the world you won't need, in order to free up some space in order to download the updates. Also, asked about being able to edit the club selection list for shot tracking and they said its not possible right now, but maybe with a future update. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy, Lots of added features!
Bought this as a gift in black and one for myself in white and have been testing it out for the past few weeks, both on the golf course AND as a sports watch. LOVE all the features although I haven't downloaded the app to save the stats yet. This watch is loaded with features. For golf, it searches and loads the course you're about to play. Then it prompts you if you want to keep score, track which club you're using and, if you purchase the optional Tru-Swing device you can choose to have your GARMIN S20 display your golf swing. Or, you can download the Tru-Swing app to your smartphone and view your golf swing on your phone. But getting back to the features built in to the S20, it displays yardage to hazards and traps, pin placement on the green and, if your tracking which golf clubs you use for each stroke it'll track the distance you hit each of them. At the end of the round it displays your score, number of putts, number of steps you walked during the round, time it took to play the round. When you're not playing golf this watch will track the number of steps you take, push the down button to display your goal, push down again it displays number of miles down to 2 decimal places, push down button again it displays calories burned, push down button again it displays the time of sunrise and sunset, push the down button again and it displays the day/month, push the down button again and it returns to displaying number of steps taken. Another neat feature is the watch will automatically sound a rather quiet alarm and display the word MOVE! every hour to remind you to get up and walk around. The watch automatically calculates the length of your stride based on your gender, height, weight and yr of birth. So if you try to compare number of steps, miles and calories burned they will vary based on your personal specs. And, lastly, you can set an alarm but I haven't tried this feature as yet so I can't comment on its usefulness. The only negative thus far is that the tone/alarm that accompanies the word MOVE! when you sit too long is very, very quiet. It would be nice to have a louder alarm or maybe a vibrate option. I'll have to test the Alarm feature to see how loud the tone is for that function. All in all, Ithe S20 is a great buy and highly recommend. It's not the latest model Garmin golf watch but you get a lot of terrific features for the money. ... show more
