Description

This exclusive limited-edition gold color Game Boy Advance SP comes with the Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 game and a coupon for free SP headphones with adapter. Many decried the original Game Boy Advance's reflective LCD screen and its reliance on external light sources. The Game Boy Advance SP's main feature--optional backlighting--fixes this complaint nicely, but it's the wealth of other features that makes this system so surprisingly good. At first look, you might think the SP is a sleek travel alarm clock. When closed, it's just as tall and deep as the original GBA, but only half as wide. Due to its clamshell design, the screen is always protected from everyday scratches. A small button in the center of the console turns on the backlighting element for use in low-light situations, like in a moving car. The SP comes with a well-designed power adapter that recharges a built-in battery; its prongs fold in for easier storage. Our informal tests found that it takes about four hours to fully charge (you can even play it while it's plugged in and charging), and the battery lasts about 11 hours with the backlighting constantly on--your results may vary. Using the backlighting less often will conserve battery power. The quality of the backlighting is very good. It's bright and clear when looking directly at it, but degraded from other angles. This is only a problem for friends who are watching the screen from over your shoulder. But size, power, and affordability do not come without trade offs. There's no headphone jack here, though Nintendo promises an adapter. The system isn't very loud at its highest volume, and the sound can be turned down to socially acceptable levels. The L and R shoulder buttons are a fraction of the size they were on the GBA, and thus are harder to hit. Also, the reduced size of the SP is slightly less comfortable for adult hands than the GBA, but perhaps more comfortable for smaller hands. The cartridge port placement on the lower part of the console is fine for GBA games, since they are flush with the console body, but older Game Boy Color carts will stick out in a way that takes some getting used to. Open it up and the hinge will seek out a preferred, pre-set angle (about 150 degrees), though you can open it a bit wider or narrower for your own comfort. The hinge stands up well to lateral pressure, and overall, the SP seems just as rugged as its predecessor--which has proven to be very rugged, indeed. --Porter B. I got this thinking it was a replacement for the one I got for christmas. Turns out, what I got from my cousin this past christmas, was a GameBox. Read the details, and look for sites that sell that sort of stuff online. There are places that sell that kind of stuff as legitimately as possible online, so don't lose home. As for this specific product, its gold, simply gold. I love it. I have a few Game Boy Advance, and other old school games, that I play on this thing. The Game Box is great, but having the legitimate version is good too. If anything else, for reliability and durability of legitimate products that other questionable stuff just may not have. I am gonna get the Pokemon: Red rescue team game just to use on here, since the GambeBox, well, it plays that game, but can't save on it. Granted, I'm old enough to be from the gamer generations that played games like that, and left them idling/afk while we had other real life responsibilities to do, then come back and continue to play the game we were doing before responsibilies called. With that said, this, the legitimate version, works well. I just hope after hard grinding on some games, that it doesn't break down on me. I tend to be the kind of guy that works a system to its limit, just through legitimate/standard means. Like for the GameBox, on the Pokemon red version, after my Golbat evolved from a Zubat, one or two levels later, that I leveled up in the same area, during the same game play time frame of 6 hours, Golbat went into evolution stage again, and I got the "Ash:??" response when nothing happened after the initial light show before the Pokemon goes white while evolving. So, yeah, with that said, I always look for a stable, reliable, long lasting, products. I look for things that can last a long, long time, cause I intend to have things, for a long, long time. To conclude this review, I will say that the legitimate Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP, works as intended. I look forward to buying legitimate versions of games to play on it for years to come. Now to find a good price and seller on a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team. P.S.: This is besides the point, but I thought I should include it here. The review box, it doesn't allow the upper arrow key to be reconized. I tried on other sites and it works there, so it isn't my system or keyboard. If anyone else see's this issue, about the up arrow key, not working on the review details box, please inform Amazon about this. Might be a bug they care to fix. Its a weird bug. So I went through a trial and error when buying this product. At first, I bought this item in "good condition". It came with many scratches on the top of the case and had some minor screen damage. It was still playable and did the job fine. I tried to live it but couldn't due to me liking my collectibles in pristine condition, so I returned it. Just know that if you buy "good condition", you will receive damaged but playable products. After getting my refund, I decided to buy "like new". It arrived within a week and was in great condition. No scratches or damage anywhere. The only problem was that it was the "AGS-001" model. The 001 was not bright at all and I could barely see the screen. Of course this was not the fault of the seller because they listed the model number in the details section and I just missed it. If you want a good game playing experience, I would get the 101 model. This is what I bought after returning the older model. I purchased from Amazing Inc., it came really fast, and was in pretty much perfect condition. No scratches, damages, came with a charger, and they even included a screen protector. I paid a bit more, but I am very satisfied with this purchase. Just make sure you know what you want and an extra $50 goes a long way in terms of quality. ... show more

I recently bought a Pearl Blue GBA SP a few months ago. It arrived in a few days and it was in good condition and even included a charger. This is only one of three GBA SP's AGS-101 models with 2 brightness settings. The 3 colors are Pearl Blue, Pearl Pink, and Graphite(Dark Grey). Make sure when you buy one to ask the seller if it's the AGS-101 model and if it comes with a charger. These GBA SP's AGS-101 models are easy to find on Amazon.com and come in a wide vareity of colors and models. The GBA SP AGS 001 has only one brightness setting and are less desirable than the AGS-101 model. These consoles are made well and are durable, you can fit these in your pocket! There are people that obviously neglect their GBA SP's by dropping them on the ground, slam it shut, place them outside, and just don't take good care of their GBA's. I was fortunate to have received one from a seller whose previous owner took good care of it. The GBA SP can play GBA games, there so many great games to choose from. The GBA SP uses a lithium ion battery that charges in 2 hrs and can last up to 10hrs+ depending on the brightness setting. One downside to the GBA SP is that there's no headphone jack, but you can buy an adapter on Amazon that will work nicely. If you're looking to buy one of these, be sure to ask the seller questions. Ask them if it's the AGS-101 model, condition, do all the buttons work good, back-light works well, battery holds a charge. If the seller does not provide accurate info, look for another honest seller that will be happy to answer your questions. Don't be in a hurry to buy a GBA SP, shop around and get the best deal you can. I've noticed recently, the GBA SP's are somewhat in high demand, people want to play their old GB , GBC, and GBA games from their childhood. There are good prices on Amazon, you just have to know what you're looking for and proceed with caution. ... show more

I received this Gameboy Advance SP relatively quickly, and it looks amazing, barely any scuffs or anything and as of now no problems on bootup. It plays my games fine! However, I would like to warn anyone who buys a Gameboy that the charger they supply is of a lesser quality. It's not an official Gameboy charger or anything and for me, it created a really awful high-pitched sort of squeal (the original charger didn't inherently cause any problems or heat up, but I've also heard that it CAN be dangerous if chargers do that). I bought an official Gameboy charger off Esty, and it doesn't have the same problem, so it was just the charger- however the charger was a good 15 dollars plus shipping so there's my disclaimer if you want to play it safe or just don't leave it unattended while charging. I'd like to point out that obviously my main purchase was the Gameboy, though, which is in great condition and plays games well. ... show more

First off, let me say this: I have only ever owned a Game Boy Color, and only yesterday, which was at the very beginning of 2013, I received this. It is a HUGE improvement over the Color, and yes, I know there was something in between. After shopping around here for months, I finally decided to get this for myself, because it had great customer reviews, and now, about 10 years after its initial release, it is much cheaper than most other systems, and it appears to be much more durable. I'm going to list the Pros and Cons of this device: Pros: Frontlit Screen enables for ease of Gameplay. Huge improvement. I can now play a game like Galaga, very dark background that elicited complaints from regular GBA players because they couldn't see what was on the screen Laptop (clamshell) design: allows for easy storage, because it protects the inside from damage while shrinking it so it can fit in your pocket. Sound system: once again, a huge plus, because it is much louder than the Game Boy Color. Rechargeable battery: saves batteries Cons: Sound CONTROL: instead of a small wheel like the Game Boy Color, this has a Slide-thing. it is very small, so it really only has 3 settings: Silent, medium, and BLOW YOUR EARS OFF in comparison to the GBC. it is a slightly slippery surface, so if your hands get sweaty, it is hard to find a comfortable way to hold the system. Overall, I think this is a GREAT little system, I cannot believe they just left the Game Boy line of games to rot in a warehouse somewhere in Japan. I really believe this outranks the DS in every way, whichever DS is popular when you read this. (also, I'd like to give a Tip of the Proverbial Hat to GameSturz, the seller which I bought mine from. They shipped the same day I bought it, and it arrived 2 days ahead of the estimated arrival time Amazon gave me. ) ... show more

It’s a legitimate game boy but with false advertising. I ordered a pearl pink gameboy advance sp but knew something was off. What I received was a re-shelled game boy. The sticker on the back was off center and the Nintendo logo on the front of the game boy was missing which indicates that this is not an original pearl pink. Buyers beware as you may receive a re-shelled console instead of a legitimate/original one. ... show more
