Description

A companion volume to Lessons in Classical Drawing and an atelier in book form, Lessons in Classical Painting breaks down the foundational skills and techniques of painting in a format that is accessible and manageable for all readers. With the same direct, easy-to-follow approach of Juliette Aristides's previous books, Lessons in Classical Painting presents aspiring artists with the fundamental skills and tools needed to master painting in the atelier style. With more than 25 years of experience in ateliers and as an art instructor, Aristides pairs personal examples and insights with theory, assignments and demonstrations for readers, discussions of technical issues, and inspirational quotes. After taking a bird's eye look at painting as a whole, Aristides breaks down painting into big picture topics like grisaille, temperature, and color, demonstrating how these key subjects can be applied by all painters. • Beautiful and Educational
Format: Hardcover
I’m so proud to have this book as part of my art reference books. The book is made of high quality materials, educational, and beautiful.

  • Excellent and informative read
Format: Kindle
I have all of Juliette's books and videos. I am inspired by the fact that she did not start out drawing and painting as a youth, but began learning it later and became a master by study and practice and love of the process. I took a workshop with two of her atelier students and was a bit envious. I did get to say hello to Juliette in passing and was star-struck the rest of the day. Not having nearby access to an atelier program where I live, having this book is probably the next best thing because it clearly outlines many of the projects and exercises that her atelier students work on in the 3-year program. I am able to work on some of these projects as well in my own time. I have seen vast improvements in my painting and drawing and feel that I could be at a professional level by the end of the year. Juliette is an incredibly talented instructor with excellent vocabulary skills. ... show more

  • A WONDERFUL BOOK PACKED WITH INSTRUCTION AS WELL AS INSITEY
Format: Kindle
Not only does this book contain great advice on how to paint in oil, it also contains A lot of wisdom. One must be able to think, observe and understand their surroundings before they even begin to put anything on a canvas and paint it.

  • Exactly what it should be.
Format: Kindle
This book was amazing. If you're looking for a step by step painting book look elsewhere. This book is written in a sensible approach from beginner to not so much beginner. None of us looking for an oil painting book are contemporary stars but this book will help you in that direction if you're willing to put in the work. It's all covered, from still life to portraits starting from black and white for discovery of form to limited palette to full color. It's not dry either. Personal anecdotes, quotes, and plenty of art is included. I was not aware of the value of this book until I completed it. Thank you Juliette Aristides for a genuinely great read and source for many years to come. ... show more

  • Love this book. . .
Format: Hardcover
I had wished I could have had this kind of classical training when I was just out of school. . . Thank you, Juliette Aristides. . . Soon I'll have all four books by this talented artist and teacher. . . . Her books (or anyone else's, for that matter) cannot take the place of actual disciplined atelier training but what Juliette Aristides has provided with her books. . . Well, let's just say, she's given me a road map to getting where I hope to be eventually. . . ... show more

  • Good companion to the other Atelier works
Format: Hardcover
I have most of her Atelier series.. Personally I think they start at a more intermediate level overall. I would probably get an essentials book that goes over the different oils materials and then get into the Atelier series. There’s some explanation of materials but hers is definitely aimed at someone wanting to create high end pieces so materials recommended may fall out of a beginners budget. There are exercises throughout the book but I wouldn’t call them step by step training. They cover the Atelier model and the steps of it. If I had to pick between this and her Classic Atelier Painting book I would prob choose that one. I think it does a much better job covering classic compositions and harmonies in masterworks and how those can be applied today. That said, if you can afford both works I would recommend them as there is a lot of useful info in both. In both books, there are a lot of classical and modern works that are analyzed for their applications and I do find that helpful from a principles perspective. I do think her writing style could be a tad more “personable”.. It can come off as a little distant and at times obtuse in that it could scare off a beginner. ... show more

  • Great Book
Format: Hardcover
This book is exactly what I was looking for. It is full of information that helps one along their artist exploration. Get this authors other books if you are looking for more knowledge. They are well writing and easy to follow.

  • Great book
Format: Hardcover
Great book - I’ve shared it with my students who are learning to paint with oil. This is a great book for understanding color theory and giving a beginner good habits. It also provides the seasoned painter reminders and new lessons. I like the technical aspect of the information provided. This is an excellent book for any artist’s library. ... show more
