  • Don't Skimp on Quality Hooks! Don't Skimp on Quality Hooks!
Style: 2/0, 25 Pack
I first bought a few of these octopus hooks when I saw them go on sale. I recently started upgrading my Texas rig offset hooks from "cheaper" generic hook brands to Gamakatsu. At first, I was hesitant at spending nearly $1 a hook (or more for some variances!), but after losing countless bass, I figured it was worth looking into (along with trying different lines, rod/reel setups, technique, etc. etc.). My hookup/landing ratio of bites has definitely improved since moving to Gamakatsu. It's not magic and it won't make fish suddenly appear and bow down before you, but, if you do your part, this hook will not let you down. I will never buy "cheap" hooks again. If you scan various sites and look for sales, you can usually find these and Gamakatsu offset hooks for about $0.50 per hook. The "cheap" ones are about half that, but for the durability and quality, it's no contest. Pay up for the quality and don't leave the lake wondering how big that one you lost was! 3/0 is my standard, but I use 2/0-5/0, depending on the size and weight of the plastic I'm using at the time). Idk what others are using these hooks for (I was gonna try these for drop shots, but I haven't yet), but I use these hooks for throwing whacky rigged Senkos. The 2/0 is perfect size, looks small compared to my other setups but flat out gets the job done! It's only been about 3 months since I first bought, but I seriously don't think I've lost a single fish on these. My opinion was solidified about 3 weeks ago when I landed a PB 6.5lb Largemouth Bass using these hooks (see picture). We don't see many 5+ pound bass around my parts here in the northeast, and I landed that monster on a budget Ugly Stik combo I bought on Amazon a few years earlier for under $50. I've since begun to appreciate the benefits of higher end rods and reels, but let this be a lesson for those of you on a tighter budget - spend the extra money on quality hooks, line, and lures - you can always make due with a "budget" reel that weighs a few ounces more. Hope this helps, happy fishing! ... show more

  • Best hooks to fish with on the market
Style: 8/0, 25 Pack
I love inshore and offshore fishing, which is the toughest on hooks. Even if I go out on head boats that include tackle, I always bring my Gamakastsu circle hooks, because I know they work better for me than what they will have. Why? Thin- They don't kill live bait. They won't destroy the frozen sardines/herring Strong- I use the 8/0s for grouper and Amberjack fishing. I was a little worried that as thin as they are, they would break or bend, but to my surprise, I've never had one do that, even with a fish that makes 28 pounds of drag scream (most 4/0 offshore reels have 20-24 pounds of drag, for the exception of some $400 reels and new Penn Fathom 2 speed). That being said, I bought some 10/0s once, but those really look too thin, and I'm a little afraid to use them. Very, very sharp. Stay hooked up- yes, I've had bites that I miss. But if the fish is on for more than 3 seconds (meaning it's hooked and not just pulling your bait with it's mouth closed, it's going to be in the boat or on the shore in short order. It's extraordinarily rare for a fish to become unbuttoned using these hooks. The one thing I don't like about them is that they are more prone to rust than some other hooks. Make sure to keep them out of the salt air. That being said, that's better for the fish if you hook one and the line breaks. I use size 1 when fishing for whiting and what ever else bites in the surf, 1/0 for live shrimp for redfish and trout, 3/0s when using a chicken rig for b-liners and key west grunt size fish, 4/0 and the occasional 5/0 for mangrove, other snapper fishing offshore and finger mullet inshore, and 8/0 for grouper and AJ when using baits like b-liners and large pinfish. If you are chunking for tuna with 50 pounds of drag, this probably isn't your hook because it may be too thin. Otherwise... Tight lines... ... show more
