  • A Pocketable Powerhouse: Simple, Manual, and USB-C
Full Disclosure: This product was received for free as part of the Vine Program. This G12 mini flash is a fantastic little tool for photographers looking for a specific, direct-flash aesthetic. It's incredibly small and lightweight, making it easy to carry in a pocket or a small camera bag without adding any noticeable bulk. The primary appeal here is the "paparazzi" or '90s point-and-shoot look it creates. The light is direct and on-axis, which is a fun and popular style for portraits and event photography. For a bit of softening, it conveniently includes a small diffuser cap that fits over the flash head. One of the best modern features is the built-in 1200mAh battery that charges via USB-C. It's a relief to not have to carry around spare AA batteries or an old micro-USB cable. A USB-C charging cable is included in the box. Crucial Point on Compatibility: This is a manual, single-contact flash. This means it will work on nearly any camera with a standard hot shoe (Canon, Sony, Fuji, etc.), but you must set the power level on the flash itself. The camera only tells it when to fire, not how bright to fire (no TTL). This is perfect for those who are comfortable with manual settings, but beginners expecting automatic flash exposure should be aware of this. With a Guide Number (GN) of 12, it's powerful enough for fill flash and portraits in dim conditions. ... show more

  • Nice manual flash that fit my Canon 6D just fine!
Very easy to mount and doesn't get in the way of the viewfinder. When it comes to photography I am an absolute novice and this was my first time using a flash on my camera and I was able to use it. However, with a flash like this that doesn't have (TTL) or "Through The Lens" you need to be very intentional on how you expose your shot manually through your camera settings and then adjusting the flash to capture the correct exposure accordingly. This is something that just takes a little bit of practice and there are lots of instructional videos out there that can teach you how to do it, which this actually makes me want to learn so I can become a better photographer! The vignetting in my photos are due to the lens being a APS-C and the camera being a full frame sensor so there is a crop factor difference. I also like that it is compact and easy to charge with a built in usb-c port. I think this is a great product if you are trying to be budget friendly and you want to master the skills of flash photography without breaking the bank. ... show more

  • Manual flash, nice for fill flashes during daylight. Rechargeable!
If you have a large, directional Speedlite flash and want something that is rechargeable, compact, and simple for a fill flash, this is a great option. If you don't own a flash and want a flash that will work in low light with your camera to create great exposures of candid people, this isn't the right one for you. This does not have ETL, or a way to allow the camera to control the amount of light needed to fill a frame, and for the camera to adjust for the flash. The only communication between your camera and flash is to tell the flash when to fire. Everything must be set manually on your flash and your camera to accommodate the extra light. I have a large flash, but I am packing this in my camera bag because it is very small, rechargeable, and I can use it in the day time when my subjects are in shadows. It works ... show more

  • Great Mini Speedlight — More Useful Than Godox “Minis”
This is an awesome compact flash! I recently tried the Godox mini speedlights since I’m a fan of their products, but they ended up being way too small for my full-frame Sony A7IV with a zoom lens. I picked up this G12 flash because it looked a little bigger—and it actually is. It fits better on my setup and works great as a lightweight fill light. There’s no TTL, but that’s fine for most shooters. You get manual control with 8 power levels from 1/128 to 1/1, with fine-tuning steps. It fired instantly and reliably on my A7IV with no issues. The LCD display is clear, the controls are responsive, and it even shows your charging percentage while plugged in via USB-C. Battery life is solid—you get about 350 full-power pops per charge, and recharging is easy with the included cable. The diffuser and storage bag are nice bonuses, and the flash feels well-built for its price point. It’s not a replacement for a full-size speedlight, but for under $30 (with coupons), it’s a fantastic option to keep in your bag for on-the-go or casual shoots. Definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a solid budget flash that punches above its size! ... show more

  • Very basic flash, small form factor, not for everybody
This is a very basic flash. It has only one electronic pin which simply acts as the trigger. It is otherwise completely manual and does not communicate with the camera. So you’ll need to adjust the camera exposure related parents and the flash level independently for the right lighting and exposure. It does come with a diffuser but you can’t tilt the flash so can’t use it as a bounce flash. Using it felt like a throwback to olden days. I can see myself using it in a pinch but only for stationary objects where I have the time to take multiple shots with different settings to get it right. Typically I was reducing the exposure by full 2 to 4 stops and then adjusting the flash level to get the right exposure. On the plus side, it does charge up its capacitor quickly and is ready in a second or two, and the battery is internal so no need to carry additional batteries. The depth of the flash is acceptable and lit up objects fifteen to twenty feet away. Can only recommend it for very casual and light use for beginners who want to understand the flash settings and the camera settings and their interplay. Can be a backup flash where you’ve run out of batteries on your main flash and have no other options. ... show more
