  • Excellent Lens with Minor Quirks
*: Silver
TL;DR: This lens from a renowned manufacturer is outstanding, with only minor issues related to optical viewfinder compatibility and build quality. Review: I've had the opportunity to use this lens, and overall, it's an excellent addition to my photography gear. One of the standout features of this lens is its exceptional optical performance. It delivers sharp, high-quality images with impressive clarity. The focal length of 16mm is versatile, making it suitable for a wide range of photographic styles, from landscapes to street photography. However, there are a couple of minor quirks to note. While not necessarily a con, it's worth mentioning that when using this lens with the optical viewfinder on my camera, there can be some visible frame lines. This can be a bit distracting for those who rely heavily on optical viewfinders. It's not a major issue, but it's something to be aware of. Another aspect that left me somewhat less thrilled was the lens's build quality. While it performs exceptionally, it feels somewhat plasticky in the hand. Given its price point and the reputation of lenses from this manufacturer, I had expected a more robust construction. However, it's important to note that this doesn't impact the lens's overall performance or image quality. In summary, this lens from a renowned manufacturer is a top performer, delivering impressive image quality with only minor quirks related to optical viewfinder compatibility and build quality. It's a versatile lens that's well-suited for various photography styles. Pros: Outstanding optical performance Versatile 16mm focal length Weather-resistant design Cons: Visible frame lines when using the optical viewfinder on some cameras Build quality feels somewhat plasticky ... show more

  • Compact, Sharp, Great Handling
*: Black
I've had this lens for a month now and used it on both an X-T2 and X-E2. I'm a stills photographer who rarely shoots video, so I can't comment on that aspect of the lens. I've had a 24mm or equivalent lens with every camera brand I've owned. I like the perspective and slightly wider rendering without distortion that this length brings to my photography. The Fujinon 16mm f2.8 fills a very familiar place in my kit. Very small and light, it's a good choice for handheld shooting while wandering around town. I shoot mostly landscape yet I didn't buy this lens for that purpose, I prefer slightly longer lenses for that. For me the 16mm 2.8 fits in for interiors and cityscape photography. The smaller and more compact size of the f2.8 handles very well on either of my camera bodies and the quiet, snappy focus means I haven't missed a shot yet. The close focusing capability is at about 6", really good for tabletop shots. I chose the f2.8 version over the f1.4 because I seldom shoot that wide open, often favoring f4 to f8 for most images. If you are all about bokeh and shallow DOF this lens is probably not for you. Yet I find that at 2.8 this lens does do a pleasing job of rendering backgrounds in a way that adds depth behind my main subject. Quite good, not just 'good enough'. Over time I have found that I like two basic lens kits for my shooting. First, a set of prime lenses with the specific purpose of slowing down and thinking about each shot or situation, then a two lens zoom kit for general photography. For Fuji the prime kit is the Rokinon 12mm and the four Fujinon compacts 16, 23, 35, and 50. By adding the 16mm f2.8 to my prime lens lineup I feel like I have a nearly complete kit lacking only a moderate telephoto. Both images taken with the 16mm f2.8. The B&W is a three-frame HDR shot handheld and the gas station image is sooc .jpg shot with Classic Chrome. *EDIT 7/15/19* Added the third image of the dog. Taken at 18" handheld 1/20, f2.8 ISO 800 single point AF. A B&W LUT added, no sharpening. I continue to be impressed with this lens and its image rendering and I can't recommend the 16mm 2.8 enough. ... show more

  • I have both fuji 16mm lenses.
*: Black
This might have been my most unnecessary purchase in a long time, but I did buy it, so I should review it. I grew so impatient waiting for this lens to hit the streets, that I bought the f/1.4 version so that I could have this focal length. That lens is every bit as good as the accolades that are given to it everywhere that people discuss Fuji lenses. So, why the seemingly redundant purchase? The f/1.4 lens is right at the edge of too large for the petite Fuji bodies. It is optically great, but I use dx cameras when I want a lower profile than when I carry my full frame DSLRs with fast glass. This f/2.8 lens returns my X-T2 to the small kit that made me purchase it in the first place. It fits neatly into the f/2 set (23, 35, 50mm) in terms of size and operation. If you are in good light, shooting in the middle of the aperture range, say f/5.6, then after much non scientific testing, I feel like you give up little by using this smaller, lighter model over the faster version. I did some brick wall tests, and this lens is capable of edge to edge sharpness from one stop down. I prefer the smaller lens in use because it is effortless to carry and you can carry your camera everywhere which means you might be more likely to have it with you. I really know when I'm using the f/1.4 lens because the size and weight lets you know it's there. To be clear, this slower lens is not a replacement for the faster lens in low light environmental type shooting. Shots made at f/1.4 with the wide angle view are magical. However, this small lens is fine for the way most people use wide angle lenses, that is stopped down for medium to deep depth of field in pursuit of street, city and landscape photos. I gave the f/1.4 lens 5 stars, and based on the difference of a 1000 dollar lens against a 400 dollar lens, I rate this lens 5 stars for cost to performance. ... show more
