Top Amazon Reviews

  • From X-T4 to X-T5
Color: Black Style: Body
Thanks to Amazon for shipping the camera quickly. It arrived with 4.21 firmware. Upgraded to 4.31. THE UPDATED FIRMWARE ONLY TAKES EFFECT AFTER A RESTART. I shoot stills. See other reviews for video. The country of origin for the X-T5 I received was Japan. Unfortunately, I ended up returning it. Thanks to Amazon again for accepting the return quickly. Here is what I thought of the camera compared to X-T4. In the Box: Camera, charger + several adapters for international use, USB-C cord, wide strap, 235 battery. Plug adapters were never bundled with X-T4. Differences: X-T4 and X-T5 are almost identical in size and weight. There are minor differences in compartment covers and the menu. The dials and buttons are the same as X-T4 and programmable just like the X-T4. The lug on the on-off knob is 1mm inside the contour of the top plate and is a tad stiffer than the X-T4. The over-under exposure dial is less stiff than the X-T4. The hardware is top notch and lives up to Fujifilm reputation. The X-T5 menu appears to have been thrown together in a hurry. Some menu items are still asking you to press the “Q” button while you have to press “DISP BACK” or “MENU OK”. When firmware is at revision 4 and higher, and the minor errors are continuing, someone is not paying attention to detail. Lenses: I have used the 15-45 and the 16-80 zooms. I have also used 23/1.4, 27/2.8 primes and Zeiss 50/2.8 macro. They have all produced crisp resolution for the 40Mp sensor. I shot with the light meter set on MULTI almost all the time. The auto exposure preferred f5.6 on all lenses. Originally, Fuji did not list 16-80 for the 40 Mp sensors. They are now offering it as a kit lens. I found the 16-80 to be equally sharp (using subjective evaluation) and as usable as all other recommended zooms and primes. Battery Life: Equal or shorter than X-T4 depending on shooting conditions. New Emulsion: “Reala Ace” has been added. It looks like Kodachrome with less saturation. Shooting with User Emulsions: There is a lapse when the camera saves the shots made with user programmed emulsions. No noticeable lapse with Fujifilm’s own emulsions. Therefore, it is not the SD card. The solution here is to shoot RAW files and do the conversions in post. I added Kodachrome, T-max 100 and Tri-X. There are 7 locations to store user emulsions. Choosing “Nothing Selected” puts all IQ settings back to what they were before the selection - an improvement over X-T4. Every B&W shot, whether Fuji, Kodak or 3rd party, looked excellent to me. Communication: USB transfer speeds are faster than X-T4. The WiFi and the Bluetooth worked but they are power hogs like the X-T4. EVF and LCD: Both are higher resolution than X-T4. The X-T5 screen flips up 90⁰ or down 45⁰. It will flip to right approximately 75⁰. It can’t flip to left. I normally hold the camera with my right hand above my left for vertical or panoramic shots. I cannot flip the LCD to preview my vertical shot. Also, the LCD can never be closed and be protected like the fully articulating one on the X-T4. The ribbon cable attached to the back of the LCD is exposed when the LCD is tilted out. It is a poor design like several other models and brands. ONE STAR DEDUCTED. Why X-T5: I wanted the 40 Mp sensor for scenery and higher resolution B&W photography. It was more affordable to stay with Fujifilm than to change brands. The pixel shift was an added benefit allowing for 160 Mp shots with a regular lens. This is the only 40Mp Fujifilm lineup offering pixel shift. Is it worth the money? Yes, if the user is willing to work with the non-articulating LCD screen. Availability of film emulsions, either user programmed or Fuji’s own is an outstanding feature. It is a good camera for prosumer. Why the Return: I couldn’t live with the flip screen any longer. It did not fit my shooting style. Correcting the menu details continues to be ignored and is a source of irritation. Wait for X-T6: Maybe. I have been procrastinating about X-T5 before I bought it and had to return it unfortunately. Overall, the enhancements to X-T5 are great, but the flip-up LCD is a letdown. I will return to X-T6 (and possibly X-pro 4) after they are launched. ... show more
