  • Awesome camera
Color: Black Style: w/ XF16-80mm Lens
Now that I have had time to really run this camera through it's "paces", I have found that it takes the best pictures (in terms of focus and color accuracy) that I have ever seen in a non-cinema camera. Most professional photographers take the SD cards out and use a card reader to import the pictures and video into a computer. It will also send your data to your phone but plugging it into a computer and downloading the data that way is problematic at best. Other than that one minor problem, I highly recommend this camera! ... show more

  • Camera for an Old Timer Camera for an Old Timer
Color: Black Style: w/ XF16-80mm Lens
Added 09-18-2020. The cameras allows the user to build a user unique menu under "My Menu" and assign a function key to launch the menu. So far I have added film emulsion, shutter delay timer, photometry and a few odds and ends to my menu. I recommend this camera without hesitation. I shoot stills. Read other reviews for video. I have photographed using film for years. The main reason I bought this camera is because I can choose the film effect then shoot the scene. With other cameras, I had to do all that work in post. It is more affordable than other brands. The body is made (or assembled) in China and the lens is made (or assembled) in the Philippines. I use B&W and classic chrome film effect the most. The CC (with little tweak) closely resembles the Kodachrome emulsion of the old days. There are a few other film emulations that one can select in the camera menu. No Moire fringing noticed so far. Maybe RGB pixel orientation geometry makes the fringes fall below the dynamic range of the picture. Power up is less than half a second. The battery charger in the kit is for in-camera charging. The charger is a 5V/3A plug in wall adapter with USB C connector. The cord is USB C to USB C. The camera can also charge from a laptop USB adapter with a type A to type C cable. Fuji also makes a cradle charger for charging 2 batteries simultaneously. Charge level display increments in 5% steps. The cradle charger uses USB C for power. The X-T4 battery is 7.2V which is different from the 9V model 126 used in a lot of other Fuji cameras. One charge and 300 shots and haven't had the need to recharge. The sensor is excellent at high and low light conditions. There is a whopping +- 6.5 stop camera shake compensation without shutter speed increase. Good for closeup, low light and street photography. It has mechanical and electronic shutters. Mechanical to electronic crossover speed is factory set. Maybe future firmware releases will allow user setting. The performance on darker scenes is excellent. I recently bought a 23mm/1.4 for indoor photography. I have set the camera to use maximum ASA 12800 for dark scenes. Surprisingly low noise at high ASA. HDR over-under exposure is decided by the camera. Bracketing can be set to +-100% to +-400%. Outdoor HDR shots of bright scenes show good balance between shadow/highlight. So far, the need for a flash is not there. All buttons on the camera can be programmed differently from factory defaults. There are 2 software that Fuji recommends. They downloaded and installed for free with purchase of this camera. There are a few downloads on Fuji website also. One download will allow you to covert the raw image stored in the camera to JPG using the processor in the camera. No need to upgrade laptop to high capacity drives or faster processors. It's possible to add light and color bias to shots. Other special effects will have to be done in post. The wireless setting will allow bluetooth as well as network connection. Although I know how to setup and use the features, but have never developed the habit for it. Read other reviews for wifi. Shutter, aperture and ASA preferred shooting is simple. Choose one, or any two, and the camera will adjust the other(s). If you have a lens with aperture ring, aperture priority is simply rotating the ring. Shutter and ASA dials are on the camera. I have noticed that while I am working to compose the shot, the aperture is opening and closing continuously ready for preview or taking the shot. I use the over-under exposure dial often. When rotated to "C" position the OU can be adjusted to +-5 stops. Everything seems to be well thought out with this camera. The learning curve is very fast if you have film photography background and know how to use manual camera overrides. I will add to this review as time goes on. ... show more

I don't know how else to describe it, it's just an amazing camera that is a blast to use and shoot. It's now my on the go everywhere camera. It's also become my sports/wildlife camera due to its incredibly fast 30FPS in crop e shutter mode. I will post more to the review as I continue to use it. • Seems good.
Color: Black Style: w/ XF16-80mm Lens
Very nice camera. IBIS is close to my Olympus bodies. Fast focus. Good low light. Can actually transfer an image to my phone before I die. 16-80 is nice. The corners are okay at 16 but if you want them in focus you have to focus there. I think the field is pretty curved.

  • Awesome Color, great for Stills, Not so Much for Video, Is this my Dream Camera? Awesome Color, great for Stills, Not so Much for Video, Is this my Dream Camera?
Color: Black Style: w/ XF16-80mm Lens
After several years of using this camera I finally decided to write a review. The Low Light Capability was my primary concern when choosing this camera and it delivers! Bottom line is that it falls just short of being my dream camera... I primarily shoot in available light or as one famous photographer put it, "available darkness". I got frustrated with and gave up on film because nothing could deliver decent quality at ISO 3200 which is my most frequent requirement. It took a long time for digital quality to exceed film quality but this camera delivers. I have even gotten usable results at ISO 12800. Fuji is known for it's colors and this camera lives up to that reputation. It did take me quite a bit of trial and error tweaking of settings -- there are many to choose from -- but I love the results. Even in extreme lighting conditions is does a great job of rendering colors and skin tones. It's also compact and light weight compared to a full-frame camera. The IBIS stabilization is good too. I have owned several Cannon cameras and each one has promised better auto-focus than ever before and each one has done what I felt was a really poor job of auto-focus. So much so that after my last Cannon camera I decided that I would not ever be buying any more cameras from them because I couldn't trust any claims being made by Cannon. Fuji on the other hand, for the most part does an excellent job of auto-focus. I did find that eye-tracking was unusable when there were multiple subjects in the frame because focus would flip randomly between the different people, this was especially unusable when doing video. But area focus works very well in all lighting conditions. In all fairness deciding which person to focus on is a hard problem to solve. My complaint is that once it has picked someone it ought to stay with that person not randomly choose to focus on someone else, especially while doing video. However some of this could also be my lack of knowledge, this camera has so many different settings and abilities perhaps there is a way to modify this behavior that I have not figured out yet. But I found it is easier just to not use eye-tracking, the other focus methods give me what I need. I primarily bought this camera for still photography and for that purpose it delivers in spades. The low light capability, stabilization and the color rendition in particular make this my dream camera. But then I ended up doing a lot of video that I had not anticipated and that is where this camera falls down. But it is not the camera body that is the problem it is the lenses that are not suitable for video. Maybe if I sprung for a "cinema" lens $$$ things would be different. I do most of my shooting with Fujinon XC50-230mm lens because this zoom range covers about 90% of what I need (event photography) and the image quality is pretty darn good especially for the price. The problem is that Fuji conceals the fact that most of it's lenses are "Vari-Focal". If you dig around on the Fuji website you will find where they explain that lens design is a series of compromises (true) and that by creating a "Vari-Focal" lens they feel that they can deliver better image quality. The problem is that this sucks for doing video and Fuji won't tell you which lenses are NOT "Vari-Focal" but they seem to imply that most of their lenses are. What is "Vari-Focal" and why does it suck? Prior to Fuji I had not ever encountered it so it came as quite a surprise to me. When you focus a zoom lens on a subject and then you zoom the lens, with a Fixed Focus lens as you zoom the focus does not change and the subject stays in focus. This is very useful when doing manual focus of a still image because you can zoom all the way in set your focus and then pull back and re-frame and your focus will stay tack sharp. But with a "Vari-Focal" lens as you zoom the focus shifts, it does not stay constant, you must refocus at every change in zoom position. It turns out that a Fixed Focus lens is a lot harder to create which adds both to the cost and the weight, so Fuji mostly does not do that and won't tell you this either. For still photography and with auto-focus enabled you mostly won't even notice the difference. And in some situations with video and auto-focus enabled the focus will be okay as you zoom. But there are multiple scenarios when shooting video that "Vari-Focal" is simply not okay. Perhaps there are work-arounds that I have not learned yet... but I find it to be a great hindrance... one that has me wishing for something different. Another issue with the XC50-230mm lens is that it takes great effort to get it to zoom smoothly and even with that effort it is still a bit jumpy. For still photos this is a non-issue, but for video it is a huge pain. Once again I have not seen any lens reviews that tell you how smoothly a lens will zoom, you don't learn this until after you buy it. And finally it is somewhat annoying that the XT4 limits you to 29 minutes of video recording. After that it silently stops recording and if you are not paying attention to this rather critical fact you end up in a world of hurt. There are many EXCUSES for why this camera and many other cameras do this but in reality there is ZERO Technical reason for not allowing continuous recording beyond the 29 minute limit. Many people including myself solve this problem by using an external recorder. But note that when recording externally the video's auto-focus behavior changes. So in summary: I do use this camera quite a bit for video but find that it is just barely adequate for the job. Perhaps if I owned a much more expensive/different lens my opinion would be different since this is mostly a limitation of the lens and not of the body. However for still photography it is absolutely wonderful! Disclaimer: I paid full price for this camera and lenses and nobody tried to influence my opinion. I put a lot of effort into these reviews, if you found this review helpful please do click the like button. ... show more
