  • One lovely viewfinder ... but with limitations
I had purchased this viewfinder to be used with my Olympus PEN E-P1. This viewfinder has limited use, but to my opinion it is better to have it than not to. Pros: 1. Very high quality construction, extremely bright 2. Very small and light 3. Frame size is more-less accurate (around 90%) 4. This device is very useful under bright sunlight in cases when LCD screen is hard to see even with the antiglare film attached. 5. It can be used with any camera or cage with hot or cold shoe mount, but only if your lens focal length multiplied by your camera crop factor (if any) is equal to 21 or 28 mm. 6. Can be used with glasses Cons: 1. Viewfinder does not communicate with camera in any way, so, you need to set your aperture, ISO and shutter speed using your camera LCD screen (could be challenging under bright sunlight) 2. Shoe mount is plastic, I would anticipate metal at this price 3. Does not have dioptric adjustment 4. Price is very high for what this thing does Limitations: 1. This device is only needed under bright sunlight when glare prevents you from using camera's LCD screen. In other words, you will pay for something you only need occasionally 2. The camera focus should be set to "center area" on half-pressed shutter button. The exposure should be set to pick the values from either the center of the frame or the entire frame. The above setup may not be ideal in some cases 3. This viewfinder has two focal length frames - 21mm and 28mm. It means that the focal length of your lens multiplied by your camera crop factor (if any) should be equal to 21 or 28 mm. In other words, if your camera has Micro 4/3 sensor with 2x crop factor, this viewfinder should work perfectly for 14mm lenses (14 * 2 = 28). If your camera has APS-C sensor with crop factor 1.6x, then this viewfinder will work perfectly with 17.5 mm lenses (17.5 * 1.6 = 28). 4. If you have zoom lens, the viewfinder can only be used with single focal length out of entire zoom range. For example, if you use Olympus 14-42mm lens, the viewfinder will only display correct frame size for the focal length of 14mm. 5. I would not recommend to use this optical viewfinders for video recording. If, lets say, your subject loses focus, you will not know about this until later, and your video or part of your video may become useless. Summary: This is one lovely little viewfinder and can work very well assuming you know what you are doing, and you are ok with its limitations. With that said, I do conditionally recommend this product. ... show more

  • Clear viewfinder
This viewfinder is very clear and useful with the 21 & 28 lines. Only negative is that it's a bit pricey.

  • Expensive, but useful...
Invested in the X70 as a compact high quality shooter. This accessory is an excellent companion for those bright days when the lcd is hardly visible. Yes it is expensive, but the quality is there with coated optical glass and super bright frames lines for the 28 mm and 21mm accessory optic. While it may be a splurge for some i find it very useful myself and a necessity. ... show more

  • I am really happy not needing the VF-X21
Difficult to use for eyeglass wearers. There's no diopter adjustment; and the back of the viewfinder is flush with the back of Fujifilm's X70 LCD screen. So to use the viewfinder, and to see the framing lines, my glasses had to be pressed up against the viewfinder, directly in the center of the viewfinder; my nose would rub against on the LCD. The rear sighting lens opening is very small, too small for eyeglass wearers, and it was really difficult to see the framing lines, especially the 21mm lines. There's no eye-cup to shield extraneous side light, and because my glasses created an additional space between my eye and the viewfinder, bright sunlight made seeing the frame lines even more difficult. I really wanted to use the VF-X21, but it did not do the job. Instead, I just increased the brightness of the LCD (to +5) and I could see the image perfectly clear, even when wearing sunglasses. And the extra power used by the brighter LCD setting, hardly reduced the battery capacity. I am really happy not needing the VF-X21. ... show more

  • too expensive for what it is
I returned it. Too expensive for what it is. This is NOT an evf (yes I know it says optical) but for what it is it doesn't worth the over 100 dollars price tag.

  • Bright Sun, Fear Not.
For those times when the bright sunlight is making your LCD hard to see, this solves the problems. Remarkably compact, remarkably accurate in the framing lines, way more accurate than the X20 for example. This gives you more than 100% FOV with frame lines, just like a rangefinder should. My personal problem is that I wear eyeglasses, and this does not give me a high enough focus point. I am unable to wear glasses and see the framing lines sufficiently. ... show more

  • Pricey but effective for eye level shooting
There are times when working close when I find it useful to frame from eye level. This expensive but nicely built optical finder does the job; I found mine to be a bit slippery in the hot shoe, and added tape to the mounting plate for a more secure fit--don't fancy the idea of losing a $200 accessory while shooting in the dark! ... show more
