I read the ad for this and started smiling to myself. A French Style umbrella? What is a French Style umbrella? Is a French style umbrella different from a German style umbrella or an “American style” umbrella. My conclusion was that this was a creative marketing approach. I was wrong, and a brief history of the umbrella is warranted. I didn’t know that the umbrella was invented in China? While umbrellas themselves were invented over 4000 years ago in China with variations in many other ancient societies, the first foldable umbrella was invented in France between 1705 - 1710. So, that means that describing this as a “French-style” is really a reference to the “foldability”, not the handle, or size, or fabric. Being foldable kind of makes it “French”. Who’d a thunk? This umbrella is significantly stronger than I would have thought at this low price. It is very sturdy, and well made. It is collapsible, making it small and easy to carry. It opens with the touch of a button, though I found that it opens MUCH better if you point it down, and let gravity help. It advertises that it auto-closes, which is a bit of a mis-representation. It does not auto close as one would expect. When you press the “close” button, the umbrella spread collapses, but the central shaft remains extended. You must grab the collapsed umbrella leaves, circle them with your hand, and then press the entire bunched mass down into the handle. I could see this being “challenging” to some because the strength necessary to compress the central shaft, at least for this new umbrella, was a great deal more than expected. Maybe it will ease up over time. The collapse of the umbrella bowl is kind of neat and unusual, but it doesn’t do what you think when you are told “auto-open, auto-close”. It would better be described as “auto-open, auto-collapse”. I like it overall. It is in the car, and ready for those days when I didn’t really believe that it was going to rain today. It is waterproof, and the black vinyl lining adds an additional layer of water protection and UV protection. I think it is priced at half of what I would expect, which makes it an excellent value. I can recommend this as a great umbrella at a bargain price.

Compact Umbrella Vine Review. Brand: TRAYEBO. I’ve been looking for another compact umbrella, one that isn’t black, yet one that isn’t flamboyant. I have certain standards, as a grandfather, and the Hello Kitty look isn’t one of them! 😀 I do have several two person / golf umbrellas, but sometimes less is better. (Like less color :) It comes inside a protective bag, inside that is the umbrella inside a sleeve in the same color. The color is excellent, and the size is right for compact: 38” diameter at its widest. (NOT the arc, which the Umbrella Industry measures and uses.) Collapsed in the sleeve it’s about 11” long. The push button to open is very powerful, and could startle anybody you were pointing at! 😲 So be prepared to: GDR, after you “fire this” at them. (Grin Duck & Run - laughing) As I write this review, it’s currently unavailable, so I can’t see price or colors. I can’t remember the other colors, just that there were several. I’m very happy to have this personal compact umbrella, it fits on the floor behind the passenger seat in my 2 door car, where I can reach it very quick. And in this size I can open it while seated, as the car door is opening, and not hurt myself. Don’t try that with a high spring opening golf umbrella in a smaller car! Has to be a 5 star for all this talent and the color choices. Only time will tell the durability. TPinSwUSA Vine Voice rating scale: ★ Well below expectations. I've been waiting for rain to really test out the umbrella, and today it rained. It is a nice looking umbrella that comes in different colors, but I chose this version of a darker blue. The advertised cost of $9.99 is a great price. I'm not sure what's French about it, but it is a very decent umbrella that kept me dry. It clicked open very well, and easy to close to and wrap up with the velco. Basically, this compact umbrella does it's job. It advertises that it is UPF 50. I cannot verify that as I really don't use umbrella's for sun shade. The inside is black, the outside is the darker blue. When I opened it outside and pointed it at the sun a few days ago, I could barely see the outline of the sun so it does seem to provide shade (I don't know or have a way to verify UPF50 standards). I had two concerns with the umbrella though, but neither would remove a star (unless the events actually happen). 1. The velcro closure thread seems like it may rip off if someone is aggressive in opening it, so that is a concern. 2. I'm not sure how the umbrella will perform in a high wind situation if there is a big rainstorm with strong winds. I would need the right circumstances to test that out. Pictures of the umbrella are included, along with the velcro closure. Overall, it does what an umbrella is supposed to do and it looks nice.
