  • 5 Stars for Illumination - Removed 2 for Bad Setup Instructions, Painful Experience, and Broken Lights
Size: 1x Light Kit
I recently created a YouTube channel documenting my progress learning how to play electric guitar and needed a good, inexpensive lighting kit. My research led me to this softbox. The illumination this kit creates is fantastic, but the setup left a great deal to be desired. If you follow the Quick Start guide that comes with this package, you're going to be in for a world of hurt. That's because the order in which it has you assemble the softbox has you working against gravity when attaching the socket head to the stand and inserting the support rods. Hooking up the optional inner diffuser was a painful experience. The four 1" metal clasps you hook onto their corresponding loops are so stiff and slip so easily that I injured one of my thumbs trying to keep them open long enough to complete the connection. Both my index fingers and thumbs are incredibly sore right now because I kept having to alternate which hand I used to relieve the pain. All told, setup took me nearly an hour, and I only finally managed to finish the job after coming up with own "Quick Start" guide which I'd like to share with you, beginning with step 2: 2. DO NOT attach the softbox to the socket head YET. Attach the socket head to the stand FIRST. This step will make the stand double as a clamp for the socket head while you complete steps 3 and 4. 3. Slip the softbox over the socket head. DO NOT secure the velcro YET. 4. Following the included guide, insert the support rods, and THEN secure the velcro around the base of the softbox. 5. Finally, I chose to attach the inner diffuser as well. I can only hope you're experience will prove far less difficult than mine. I should also note that two of the lights arrived damage so I'm only using three for now. There's something rattling in one of them. The silver screw at the base of the other one fell out and can't be screwed back in. I've already e-mailed Fovitec about the issue. Even with just three lights active though, the illumination the kit produces is a massive improvement over the ceiling light in my living room. Overall, for YouTube lighting on a budget, I couldn't be happier, and would not mind buying another if I feel I need to. ... show more

  • Really impressed with these lights.
Size: 1x Light Kit
Really impressed with these lights. I currently own two Lowell Rifa lights LC-66 (750 watt each) which are tungsten and I was needing a daylight option for some upcoming shooting that is planned. Just unpacked these and I am quite surprised at what you get for the money. Put the bulbs in turned them on and let them warm up for awhile and I am very happy with the results. As a few have mentioned, the weak point is the stands, but they will suffice, and I have other Manfrotto stands that can be used if necessary. I always use sand bags anyway. These lights are plenty durable for average use, if you are going to be using these lights every day, I would suggest looking at some of the professional options such as kinoflo etc. instead. Lowell does make a modification kit for my Rifa lights that will allow them to take both CFL and Tungsten bulbs, but the Lowell modification kit does not come with bulbs or the necessary add-on to even mount the CLF's to the modified light AND costs more than two of these full kits combined. A few additional positive notes: The support ribs used inside the softbox are metal. The softbox shroud can be mounted tall or wide depending on your preference, just by turning it 90 degrees when installing it on the base. The bulbs put out a nice daylight balanced color and look to be pretty accurate regarding color rendering (no cast to my eye). Interior secondary clip on diffuser (included) helps spread the light and make nice and soft once the main diffuser is added. What could be better (minor grips): I would like it if the softbox was more square, thus it would be a little larger. The stands could have less plastic. Would be nice if the cord was a little longer. I will be using these lights this weekend for some interview setups and will report back on any issue I experience. So far, I see no reason not to give them a 5 star rating. I am truly happy with the purchase, and I can rarely say that about my cheap purchases. Thanks to the manufacturer for providing such a decent product at a reasonable price point. Yes, I would recommend this CFL softbox lighting kit to a friend. Great value! ... show more

  • Good value for low price...
Size: 1x Light Kit
This was an economical addition to my amateur home studio. I like the replacable bulbs, and in fact I did install better ones of my own... I really get some excellent light from the thing now. The head seems adequately built, although I use a seperate metal tilt mount and don't use the plastic one that comes as an integral part of the head assembly. If that broke the whole thing would be ruined, so I think it's better to do the tilting with a seperate metal mount. As to the stand that came with the softbox, it's made of steel but is a very lightweight version of a normal light stand, with rather flimsey adjustment clamps. I use it to support a small reflector, and it's very handy for that. As to the softbox, I put it on a full size stand and it works great ! ... show more

  • Great until they weren’t
Size: 1x Light Kit
I am a hobbiest photographer and needed low cost lighting as I occasionally do studio shots. I ordered 2 lights and for the first 2 years they were great for my needs. I hadn’t done any indoor photos for about 3 years due to the pandemic. I got them out last week for a session and one was dead. The second died yesterday. I’m disappointed to say the least. I had used them for maybe 30 sessions total. ... show more
